for the most part in possession of greater intelligence and connectedness than those leading the factions My dear friends follow an idea they were sold by a marketer Ever read this All Marketers are Liars Great book Or this one The Tipping Point Responsible empowering reads If ever one wanted to own their power as an individual these would be great books to engage Politicians are liars of convenience In order for most of them to stay in office they must be re elected So getting that done is job one Telling people what they want to hear is frequently a good interim solution The short term cycle of Politics and daily Media which feeds upon it economically in much the same manner as American Retail does on the concept of Christmas is designed to survive via consumerism It needs the public to feed on it s messages in order to complete the advertising cycle and show profit Now why would it bother me that my friends would do this Well it does so for selfish reasons I like my friends and see them as high value contributors to society potentially and it is really embarrassing to see grown educated people cuddling a Red or Blue blankie asking a Politician to feed them nurturing leadership The obvious fact is that with many Politicians the Ethics Deficit has left their Moral Bank Account without funds and their Pantry is inhabited only by the cobwebs of desire to succeed in Politics So here is what I propose Ignore them Take the reins of your life act right where you are Think about what you do which makes you feel happy engaged and fulfilled and do that We become what we lend attention and heart to If you read the National Enquirer well

  • Holy Water: A Christmas History
at that time in History I was to be the first born of six children My Hawaiian Father was attending Marquette University on a GI Bill program and had met my Yugoslavian Mother The rest sorta makes me smile I know how Hawaiians are about women So A lifetime of Christmas Birthdays later and it seriously is my favorite time of year But not for reasons one might suspect My Mother always made a huge to do about Christmas My parents were generous to a fault It is all that I remember the fantasy of it and the generosity But what really made Christmas special had nothing to do with gift wrapping Christmas Trees or Santa much as I relished it all and loved it What made the day unique to me occurred one Fall day as I was walking to Parochial school I believe I was in third grade I used to make the rather long walk solo and recall a particular day well I had made my way from our split level 1950 s house three blocks through the housing tract then along the railroad tracks which stretched through a mile long vacant field Beautiful bright blue Fall day Toodling along and somewhat bored by the length of the walk and really looking forward to my day at school which would begin with First Friday Mass I was suddenly conscious of not being alone It was as if I was looking at the scene before me through a wavy piece of glass and I then met someone in a way that was unique and new to me That person was a man who spoke with me and showed me my life ahead I can only describe the conversation as exemplifying the tenet described in scripture of knowing as we are known It was like being wrapped up in the most complete understanding consciousness that ever was It is difficult to put into words really But I knew who this was He walked with me It was a comfortable feeling As a Father now I know what this was Paternal Love being bestowed on me I never spoke of this to anyone In fact this is the first time I have written of it I have reasons for that So many times I have seen people stress about Religion or Godliness even over Christmas But that day Jesus showed me what He meant and why as well as how I was to be as a man I understood in the moment that God so loved the world that He sent his only Son His living Word to be with us And my response was simple I accepted what he had to say and said thank you Fifteen minutes later I was standing outside the church It was then that I understood what the Church really was It was me And you And Christmas became special that year in a new way A rule developed in my parent s house

  • Awards and Praise
I was at the Surfer Poll awards shooting for the magazine when someone came and found me and dragged me up on stage in front of about 3 k people where my editor said A lot of people want to know how you did this and how it was lit It was one of the first images created using high speed sync flash which Canon had innovated My answer as I looked out at the crowd I read the Canon manual It is right there on page 18 Everybody laughed and I grabbed the award and went back to work This image came on the heels of another magazine cover for The Surfers Journal which some in the industry called the greatest image descriptive of the sport in it s History All that stuff is nice but you cannot eat praise or awards Why Corbis matters And it keeps me in the water somewhere in the world every day Thank you Now back to the point of this post on Awards and Praise The way my work moved forward was via the connectedness and support of professional publishing which was run as a purely editorial concern firstly to provide real time documentation of the sport as it occurred around the world The second order of the day was advertising As the world morphed publishing reversed and editorial became advertorial and what we refer to in Marketing as the race to the bottom began Then the publishing bankruptcies began Out of this a restructure occurred when most professionals were jettisoned and literally told not to bother submitting work as it would not be looked at Publishing then engaged a green new crop which could be more easily controlled and taken advantage of more or less I won t go into it as the explanation is one of photobiz tediousness But basically the publishing companies hit bottom and figured out a way to stay there Cue social media where a photographer can display his work and progress and connect directly to the market via Blog Facebook Twitter et al Cue Publishers who now say shunned senior staff cannot be published because they showed their work to a few people via their networks and that makes the image dead What that says to me is not unlike the conversation of a jealous girlfriend who saw you talking to another woman and beat you up for it when you return home together each day It just does not make much sense This is why Social media allows an Artist to connect his work and that of his publications to a far greater different audience The lack of understanding of how Permission based marketing and social media which is based upon it is exactly why publishing is hitting bottom perpetually They do not understand the concepts of generosity and connection Yet all great Art is based upon those things So what does that say about the greenies working for those struggling publications and the content
