have become a mere facade which thinly masks the Corporatism whose strings manipulate the players in Govt I won t put the pundit s name or face on my blog He is a notorious bottom dweller and his handlers are smart men I have had little but disgust for the man most of my life But I do accede to his unalienable right to pursue his work and business and his contrived opinions We all should But if one disagrees with him the best thing to do is to ignore the entire mess Don t buy in on anything associated with him Just stop Personally act And help someone who builds Put your attention there Much needs fixing these days We all need to study up focus and refuse to be led astray CREATE something Grow Wolfgang Von Goethe put it well Divide and rule the politician cries unite and lead is watchword of the wise Yesterday a Sunday was spent studying a wide variety of things Twelve hours straight online while slowly working through an art file from a shoot the other day when pressure and a feeling of claustrophobia from tales of much nastiness being delivered to my in box about my own poorly led town made me feel in need of a saltwater bath Images posted below On my return I had sat down to watch a Ted talk that Donna Von Hoesslin had sent me I liked the talk But what I found most enlightening was the discourse which followed on the TED website It was compelling enough that it caused me to finally register for Ted and begin my own contribution to the conversations which occur there I do not engage everything The reason for that is life today has the effect of a riot on the soul and psyche Information disinformation lies misdirection leveraging manipulating all of it really an endeavor to market something Here is that Ted talk Peter Diamandis Abundance is our future The realization that all marketers are liars is what turned me on to Seth Godin actually The man has chops But some lies really sneak up on one Pays to be enlightened Seth perpetually riffs on how marketing works and in reading him you begin to step into a certain flow of understanding regarding who indeed your puppet master may be That is crucial if one wants progress within a Community and in one s life and work and yes family Coming up this month is the Triiibes 2012 Global Retreat which will be hosted by our friends here in Ventura California We are calling the event FLOW Our hope is that in this impressive gathering of bright lights that people will connect and participants benefit in their lives businesses and Communities from stepping into Flow and away from strife Here is the website Check out the speakers peruse the plans See if it is a fit for you Come You are invited The only caveats being that you

  • The Cove
is the result of a quest of some sort So there is a story behind each The first image in this edit request was simple to find It was a Wiamea dawn shorebreak shot which I had captured 10 years ago standing right next to Warren Bolster who was twitching in manic fashion when I would look over at him I had not known this but since I was staying at Wiamea that year and heard the break fire up in the night from my bed I was first on it but I had inadvertently placed myself in Warren s favorite spot I could see his discomfort and found it amusing as I was shooting with an ancient Century 650 F 6 7 manual focus telephoto He of course had a beautiful Canon 600 F4 L autofocus lens I was sad when I learned of Warren s death awhile ago Lots of memories attach themselves to my work This made me think of my friend and colleague Jason Wolcott s words which I included in the image above It was shot in a remote cove in Mexico 12 years ago using that same Century 650 lens I had been shooting from the water at the South end of the cove that afternoon having driven down with my friend Dean and one of the Goleta Bodyboarders The Cove is an amazing place Pristine and alive with all manner of sea life A fish farm lies just offshore As the light was coming on in the later afternoon I was in the water shooting one of the guys on a left and saw an entire school of fish jump through the air in panic We all laughed Then I thought hmm why the display And there he was a huge tiger shark

Our own Point Of View POV for short is one that being our own may not seem particularly special to us I find myself overlooking the fact that I can be rather unique You may tend to do that as well As a photographer writer film maker I am all about communicating a designated POV I decide what perspective a subject ought to be examined from in order to best embrace a particular viewer audience This was one heckuva busy week I shot a music video BMX a performance music video piece K38 rescue work did editorial fulfillment for lifestyle and some fashion publications In each project it was my choice of POV which made the work have appeal or cachet as I like to call it Here is a great clip where the POV the film maker chose in communicating a mans job place is a best case example From music to narration to lens perspective I was completely smitten by this Be you It matters The gallery below is from this week A short look at a thousand images and 6 hours of motion picture most of it shot in the last 6 days All work was filmed with the Canon 5DM2 Sound was captured using the Beachtek DXA controller with Rode Shotgun and Audiotechica Propoint symphonic mics One thing for sure Canon not only makes my POV possible they make it easy Click on any of the images to toggle through as a slide show Posted in Blog Surfing Is Interpreting 3 Responses to Windows of Perception Ed Brenegar says July 22 2010 at 3 13 pm POV Love your thoughts on this I m not sure people are aware that they have a POV and that it comes from the context they are in I know

  • Vulnerability
was a lot on the line Knowing then what I know now about the business of photography and art interpretation would I do it over again Quite a telling question All of us must embrace and mitigate risk via personal artistic and fiscal vulnerability It is part of the game we play when we endeavor to establish ourselves as being authentic Does a construction worker whose hobby is photography have any more or less validity in his work than someone who risks all The answer is in Art History We are all in a race of sorts The moments of our lives tick by and for an artist those will be measured in the level of commitment they make in learning to communicate and the willingness to embrace the discomforts of vulnerability and potential fiscal disaster Success is based on commitment That first step into the void is a doozy How comfortable are you with yourself and your decision making process If you are not you may be better off and happier keeping that day job Seth Godin writes on this theme here in a very appropriate blog Thinking I am telling you not to follow your dreams Watch this I am finally at home A huge pile of post production work is in front of me after the last two months worth of creative content acquisition In working through two jobs yesterday I ran across some images that disappeared in a blog crash last year Curiousity had me dragging the RAW files into Lightroom 2 a program I had not been using at the time the original work was captured Here are some of the images Hailey and Sierra Partridge in Downtown Ventura Period 1940 s wardrobe Styling by Donna Von Hoesslin Jewelry by BettyB Whew a total of 7 extra hours on the computer What had I been thinking when I committed to acquire the wardrobe and shoot this in the middle of the night with no real client in mind This will be great Is it Only time will really tell Tick Tock Hailey and Sierra Sierra Sierra Sierra Sierra Hailey Hailey Sierra and Hailey Hailey Hailey Posted in Blog While the World Shakes Touch 8 Responses to Vulnerability Hailey Partridge says October 12 2009 at 4 43 pm Despite that fact that we had no real client in mind and it was practically midnight I absolutely love how all these shots turned out You never cease to amaze me David xo Hailey Reply admin says October 12 2009 at 4 53 pm Every time I look what we make it sorta blows my mind Hailey You girls rock Reply Kiley Ki says October 12 2009 at 5 26 pm Love the shots Reply admin says October 12 2009 at 5 29 pm Thanks Kiley I thought about your singing as I wrote this Heavy standing up in front of a crowd and delivering like you do Reply DK says October 12 2009 at 5 36 pm

  • Bali Journal 5: Sacrosanct
s skills That means a lot coming from him such an accomplished multi sport athlete We all headed inside for Heineken and Vodka cocktails With music pumping from the Joglo s sound system we watched the color drain out of the sky Inky blackness slid down from overhead out and around the horizon as the firmament brimmed afresh with brilliance one only experiences away from city lights A sliver of moon glided through clouds framed by palms and all was still Then the hula hoops came out Justin and Wayan had made hoops out of electrical conduit Some of the local girls had arrived and it was three abrest on what served as the dance floor as well all tried our hand er hips at it The soft dim lighting of the joglo made for a surreal scene as Justin s impeccable musical taste prodded us all along into swaying hoopness Around 10pm we made a dash for Michael s new restaurant which is on the beach for a Western Balinese blend meal Michael is a Canadian advertising wizard who having made the score of a lifetime in his career over ten years ago moved from Toronto to Bali He develops this place now Michael gave us copies of his new insider s guide to Bali book It is a good humored look into aspects of Balinese culture one would not expect in your average tourism guide By midnight Donna and I were snuggled under the stars on a mattress bed laid out on the large deck while crazy hula hoop party fun went on inside the joglo I awoke pre dawn First light was a streak of magenta and orange stamped with black palm silhouettes in the eastern sky across the river At the railing leaned Justin quietly watching it all With my arms wrapped around Donna I had a quiet over the shoulder look at the peaceful scene The noise of the surf rumbling offshore was dotted with staccato rooster blasts Moisture from the night lay atop us as the soft pulse of sleep breathing from Donna tried to lure me back into a different dream from that which my consciousness was fixated upon at the moment Justin turned quietly and walked back inside I heard him get back into the big Indonesian bed I imagined he thought of Harmony I know that I would be if I were him This was their place in spite of her being a world away I slipped from our bed and silently crept past Aaron asleep ten feet away rounding the corner of the Joglo to find Gusti sitting up eyes still full of sleep Grabbing a camera out of my bag I walked across the grass framed the Joglo dawn sky and jungle and shot a single frame Perfect Justin met me as I walked back and together we made our way down the hill and up to the little warung restaurant cliff top for a surf check A couple guys were seated having coffee watching the light come up and the surf boom Four guys had already made their way out and were sort of getting worked by a set Coffee Justin asked Sure I enthused with a camera in each hand being put down on pink plastic table covers In a few moments he had emerged from the kitchen with two glass mugs of Bali coffee and we chatted with the boys and perused the surf A few good ones spun through in the offshore cleanliness of morning We watched a fishing boat make its way outside and I heard the story of a largish swell last year that kept several boats at sea for 3 days Out of supplies the boats had eventually made a run for shore They did not make it and two of the fishermen had died bodies washing in at the sandbar beach The boats were lost Totalled This place plays for keeps at size I know why Justin has big boards Outside I saw someone drop down the face and realized that they were on what appeared to be an eight foot plus board The short boarders continued to get worked missing the waves they paddled for only to be nailed by the wave following Typical Could have been me actually The right equipment makes a big difference when the ocean begins to really move A cheery man with a kind look to him arrived The warung owner We said our hellos and goodbyes and proceeded down the cliff to the beach Justin turned to me at this point and began a story several of them in fact All interwoven Big changes are headed this way On top of the development that you see there is an encroaching Muslim population This being a Hindu country you can see conflict coming He told me about how a cooperative had bought a large parcel of village land The coop was from Java The plan was to build a Javanese enclave On Bali the Javanese are the unclean people Java was the ancestral home of the Balinese who fled it in the course of an uprising The Balinese you see today are the descendants of royalty based in Indian royal families They came to Bali bringing their lives inviolate to what many consider to be one of the most blessed fertile lands on earth They had left the Muslim Javanese behind Wayan saw something last year that really screwed him up Two Javanese guys had been passing through Their motorbike broke down and in sort looking through the village they were caught and accused of stealing They were brought before the Banjar chief beaten with chains taken down here to where we stood at the moth of the Holy river stoned them then cut the bodies into pieces and their remains were dumped into the sea I doubt they really stole anything They were just trying to fix their bike They were workers Here from
