  • The Beauty of Story
to carry on what would pass for a normal conversation So I let Y know what was in my past My athletic careers car racing and building radio and TV work Company development Environmental work my great kids and the fond and long term relationship I had existed within with my former wife Then I told her about what I was doing at that moment Traveling as an Editorial and Commercial Sports and Lifestyle Photographer and Writer working in Motion Picture I talked about some of the adventures I had experienced most recently I did the Journalistic account of the life of David F Pu u Who what when where why and how And Y simply looked at me Unflinching Out of the blue these words came out I will never let you use me for sex Y left me going in circles with that one But then I realized something People use the Art of the story quite frequently to gain a foothold in your heart But the problem for Y and I is that this was not my intention I was simply fed up after 2 mos of NOT telling my story and conforming to the dance which I had learned really is descriptive of the dating process A somewhat awkward goodbye transpired and I figured we were pretty much done But three days later Y called and I reckoned that I could tolerate another date Heck maybe we just got off on the wrong foot So we met in a Thousand Oaks restaurant for a cocktail me having driven down from Ventura and pretty much right away Y revealed her tack I had not said too much this time to be honest David why are you lying to me I told you I am not letting you use me for sex My response was to tell her what I had done since we last met Which brought up some of the wonderful women I get to work with Y grew flustered when I finally politely told her that I really had no sexual agenda where any woman was concerned and that this dating thing was me getting feet down on the ground and learning after being half of a couple all my life what being single really meant A strained hug and kiss on the cheek and a faint see you and I in a much relieved fashion went back to my car What had just happened Well whatever it was I felt violated I also realized that Y maybe had issues which possibly required me to run as fast as possible in the other direction But here is the deal I never run away from scary stuff I always run at it Makes for a better story if you know what you are doing So the next day I rang Y up I know against the rules Too soon I was wondering if you and I could meet for dinner next Friday I am meeting friends

  • The Morning After (Veterans Day)
Thanking a Veteran I could not help but be very uncomfortable by what I have been watching happen to our Veterans in recent years The day as a holiday yesterday made me even more miserable about being an American It is no secret nor is it news in any way that War is waged on the backs of our youth That the Political Will embedded in a Nation s employing of Imperialism is carried out under order by our Military But what has happened to us when as a Nation we have leaders who think nothing of kicking Veterans in the mouth when their active service is complete as a matter of policy As I watched the President issue his rhetoric driven Veterans Day message yesterday I could not even be angry about the amorality of it as I have come to expect that sort of thing from the man as it is part of the job description for Politicians to tell us what we want to hear He exemplifies the most pointed aspects of bad leadership to me An expensive mistake in many ways But those people who went to War deserve more than words In fact they need much more I am seriously embarrassed by what I am seeing Vets go through today Here is a telling piece from the New York Times on losing a son to a broken system Yesterday I was sent a very inspiring story written by Kevin Cody which is about a Surfer named Peff Eick and a music video the veteran of Vietnam had made and the man s continuing service to his fellows Read the article and watch the video here Bill Moyers writes on it all here Tom Waits nails it all down in Hell Broke Luce and shares it

  • Sea-Space Summit DC 2013
developed a means of detecting and removing nuclear contaminants aka persistent inorganic pollutants from the water column In fact the system is able to remove a large variety of water borne contaminants Our Teams and Boards in both entities are highest bar We have solutions at our fingertips Will we be able to implement them as a collective to benefit mankind In a note to George Orbelian one of the Ocean Lover Advisory Board members regarding the upcoming Summit I received an educated response and proposal for resolution I have simply pasted the correspondence below Dear David Looks like a great group I think that it is time for less talking and more doing We should have a 3D model of the planet earth and the universe Google has it Ojingo could add it to the Hasbro my3D concept and port it to smart phones and social networks We put voyage tracker the same stuff we got a Google Earth Hero award for on everybody s smart phone for free Everyone Anywhere can send in what they see we see all the earth in real time and can have scientists confirm the spots that need attention All the educational scientific and business efforts are linked to this global network so that issues can be identified solutions designed and implemented The ultimate reality show our planet real time right now real issues SURVIVOR but this time it is for real and for the children of the future We need to pull back the curtain of ignorance that is keeping people in the dark We need to start implementing existing solutions now Apply this quote to the conference and you ll have something Justice is the first virtue of social institutions as truth is of systems of thought A theory however elegant and economical must be rejected or revised if it is untrue likewise laws and institutions no matter how efficient and well arranged must be reformed or abolished if they are unjust Each person possesses an inviolability founded on justice that even the welfare of society as a whole cannot override For this reason justice denies that the loss of freedom for some is made right by a greater good shared by others It does not allow that the sacrifices imposed on a few are outweighed by the larger sum of advantages enjoyed by many Therefore in a just society the liberties of equal citizenship are taken as settled the rights secured by justice are not subject to political bargaining or to the calculus of social interests The only thing that permits us to acquiesce in an erroneous theory is the lack of a better one analogously an injustice is tolerable only when it is necessary to avoid an even greater injustice Being first virtues of human activities truth and justice are uncompromising From A THEORY OF JUSTICE BY JOHN RAWLS Think what we would have if we wired all of our best institutions libraries laboratories and minds together we have

of the problems Today I am stunned by the knowledge that we have located solutions for them In ONE year These are huge issues So how to start in seeing that they are implemented Behind it all is my firm belief that only in a collective effort based around an understanding of the Sea and Man s ability to accurately assess and design solutions according to a long term cycle will true and valid choices be made Why the Ocean Why the Big Blue That is where life came from and in that fluid passivity is found a great expansive intelligence Mankind has a vested interest in seeking what many of us term win win sort of solutions which our world really needs in order to gain exponential results in defiance of the entropy we see emerging daily around us all Some of these projects I am not at liberty to discuss However there are a few being launched that I am able to touch upon In the ensuing months I will log some of these into the blog here from time to time One project done under the auspices of a new collaborative business endeavor named Ocean Lovers is called the Blue Note It is a simple thing intentionally small minor blue note noun Music a minor interval where a major would be expected used esp in jazz Here is the first one A Blue Note is intended to create unity of purpose It is an invitation to be like water and in that process become part of a solution that is true It is in the short strokes and small choices where eventually great change is seeded In an openly adversarial socio political system there is much strength to be gained in the common bond of health happiness

  • A Thanksgiving Story
see what was coming in terms of our evening as clearly as one would driving a long country road and happening upon a cross road As an image maker and Journalist I am highly cognizant of the significance of cross roads They are pretty special when you look back on them with the benefit of retrospect But nowadays I cherish what comes at me via these very fortuitous moments in time I pay attention to the traffic There we all were on the Gaviota Coast and as golden fingers of light withdrew in leisurely fashion across the coastal scrub and the ocean took on mauve and amber tones the stories flowed and Bruce his daughter Nancie son Dana Wingy Robb Donna and I shared stories wine laughter and the texture of our separate and collective lives I will forever sit rapt at the feet of a great story teller And I was surrounded by them As dinner wrapped up none of us left the table A lot of very rich and heavy sonnet ensued and I swear I went from tears to laughter and back several times before Bruce got up only to return to the table with a sheaf of papers bound together A hand made phone book of sorts Hey have you talked to Hobie lately Bruce asked Ah no I had wanted to interview him actually Bruce but he has been having a pretty heavy battle with Cancer I think he may be on Orcas Island A lot was contained in what Bruce was doing That man has the sharpest mind of just about anyone I have met I swear he thinks in multiple dimensions It is an ability which I have seen and found in common with many great creatives Let s call that foker up I had been enlisted many years ago as an image maker for Hobie Sports Intnl and they had sent me all over the world I have gotten to travel with Jeff Alter Dan Mangus Sean Douglas and a plethora of great athletes that today are a part of the lifestyle Hobie Alter created which I truly view simultaneously as being descendent from my Hawaiian heritage and having steered the development of contemporary culture I constantly pinch myself when on our shoots the ocean delivers repeatedly experiences that are sort of mind blowing Bruce got Hobie on the line by the third ring I think Without betraying the confidential nature of the conversation I will just say that it was about gratitude I listened as he thanked Hobie for everything he had done From surfboards to boats to gliders and more Bruce thanked Hobie Alter for introducing him to it all And then he handed the phone to me I have surfed all over the world I think that I have built maybe 40k surfboards in my life I ve sailed swam fished soared built and raced cars and bikes and today I travel with cameras and communicate what that life
