Plans dashed themselves to pieces But then in a phone call from Stefanie we learned her Mother s wish was that everyone gather together regularly There would be a memorial at a Church in Hingham Massachusetts that she loved One of the things that I appreciate about Donna s family is that they seem to all be proponents of action They are big on going and doing It is indicative to me of their ancestry which is deeply rooted in American History Donna and I strode up the steep drive which lead up to a majestic 16th century Church The weather vane on the steeple and American flag waving in a cool breeze stood out against puffy white cumulous clouds scudding across a blue sky in a valiant replication of traditional Americana post card style We were late Stef was standing in the doorway of what is known as the Old Ship Church parts of which had been scavenged from a sailing vessel A cream tone dress replete with red woven leaves highlit in black chic knee height boots and dark hair framing pale skin she fit that diorama standing in the doorway Two words Leaving her post she walked down to meet us and slipped her arms around Donna and I both and we walked warmed into the old church together It was full I think we were the last to enter Inside we quickly found a place to sit On the way I saw Dusty Barbara s man and slapped him on the shoulder clasping his hand in mine We shared a knowing smile A man rising to the challenge of the day The Golden light of a Spring afternoon in Massachusetts flowed through old paned glass and into the wooden church collecting in warm pools on oaken floors and a day which had dawned cloudy rainy and cold had blossomed in respite as if in acknowledgment It was a gift So much like that day in Morro Bay when we had first met Barbara Two words This song had come to mind And peace flowed in that place amongst shards of glass which reflected all of that light Memorials can be like that When done well they are about healing and goodbyes and embrace making the vessel broken whole again The light was there The service went sweetly forward as one by one family and friends arose to speak on the day and passage of the life of Barbara Adams Bowers Valovic Barbara s cousin Susan Bowers Vergeront read a poem which Dusty had written in the wake of her death Both Donna and Stef managed messages that had the affect of a warm melodious sonnet more than any stark indication of bereavement and loss All the while this was going on two words kept pushing their way to the surface inside of me much as eggs boiling in pot I had thought about speaking of them Public speaking and preaching in front of Church Congregations is

on October 16 2010 by David Pu u 0 Comments There is a friend of mine Joe Cardella who has coined a phrase Art Saves Lives When looked at sideways you can truly understand that statement However approach it with logical pragmatism and you will in fact experience NO magical transformation in your life at all The reason for this is because the human heart Continue Reading Posted in Blog Focus and Awareness Posted on August 13 2010 by David Pu u 0 Comments In a culture that is enamored with here and now and proximity of the rapid flow of daily events we have unwittingly engaged what I think to be a somewhat innocently architected lack of focus Sort of like a baby in a crib so taken by a hanging mobile that he has forgotten his bottle Continue Reading Posted in Blog Light Monger Posted on July 8 2010 by David Pu u 2 Comments I have always been a light monger To me it was apparent that I would always want to walk in light be led by it emanate it So it comes as a bit confusing and stark when something as overcast as anger gets stirred into the brightness But seeing the thick black thread of darkness Continue Reading Posted in Blog Hybrid Vigor Posted on May 4 2010 by David Pu u 1 Comment n Increased vigor or other superior qualities arising from the crossbreeding of genetically different plants or animals Also called heterosis Typically the term is reserved for describing the increased performance of a species But in Ventura California we have been seeing our fair share of the above described noun more in the form of a Continue Reading Posted in Blog Small Town Big World Posted on April 28 2010 by

  • Digging for Gems
this architectural gem of a palace used in names of some brilliantly colored hummingbirds e g mountain gem verb gemmed gemming trans usu as adj gemmed rare decorate with or as with gems DERIVATIVES gemlike ˌlīk adjective ORIGIN Old English gim from Latin gemma bud jewel influenced in Middle English by Old French gemme Frequently when one comes across a precious thing it does not have a lot of luster It may as a result been difficult to find as it looked like all the rest of the environment Gems are funny that way They stay rare because A they tend to be camouflaged and B There really are not that many in existence when compared to the sum total of the elements in creation My job is to find those maybe polish them up a bit then give them away Sometimes in the case of a gem that may be an empiricle Truth that will piss off some folks while simultaneously making others dance in delight who on the inside were murmuring I knew it I guessed that it was hiding there and you found it Those people are generally pretty happy when I hand it to them as my gift Why do I give it away Well because then I can get more The supply of that truth is infinite My consciousness is one of abundance Why is the other group pissed off Because if they take my gift the Truth requires that they change Not everyone wants change and they will fight for that right to stay exactly where they are Seth Godin writes something very beautiful today regarding being invited to join the club of the involved in a blog entitled The Declining Problem of Groucho Marxism My imaging work engages a similar modus I find something which I know will sparkle when I bring it in from some watery far flung or secreted destination I know where to look I am really good at it and experience both enjoy and delight in the process What makes the image gems rare They tend to transform the recipient in much the same manner that they did to me when I went looking for them But really the process is a little different for me I dreamed planned implemented discovered returned and developed my gem So to me it is a pearl of very great beauty and value I did not create it What happened is that I earned the discovery Now the irony in this is apparent in the process by which we give our gifts I have become very selective about who and what I will donate mine to I have developed a means of measuring who I support So who gets the gems Other givers The reason for that should be obvious but I will state it anyway It is because they are the ones who will appreciate the precious and use it to benefit people and our Earth I learned long ago to honor

I paddled full speed out to meet it At the last possible moment I spun and began my paddle into the wave I could hear the boys screaming on the inside GO I was I knew this sort of wave I understood the physics involved in a long interval swell which draws water from very deep So I sprint paddled nearly to the bottom before springing to my feet In spite of that I still was almost pitched Driving off the bottom I catapulted backdoor into a 10 foot barrel and remember clearly the intense focus I had and the sound and saw everything in ultra slow motion As I was spit out on to the relative calm of the shoulder it was as if someone had pulled the string on a child s doll and my knees literally folded under me I rolled onto the deck of the 6 8 and off into the water The boys were laughing Man that was heavy Inside I could see Ronnie set up on the Log Cabin porch She had been shooting I got a couple more waves but I was done emotionally and came in as the break began to max with the pulse of the swell and the lineup shifted to the outside reefs As the day turned beautiful I had something to eat and sat and watched the playing field morph For hours Both Ronnie and I noticed that every once in awhile a big peak would heave offshore and spin empty and perfect through the outside This went on for a couple hours In my mind I was done I had experienced one of those defining waves that morning But there it was outside The Bluebird I had never seen one like that before In time Ronnie asked if I was going to go out I actually snapped at her What are you crazy I would die out there She was silent We had been together for almost 14 years at that point She knew me well and how intense I can get when challenge rears up An hour or so later she asked me again though I said nothing But I was watching and timing the set s and examining the route off the beach which had turned into a maelstrom I saw a way And in the time frame of 15 minutes I went back to our room got my 7 8 which was waxed and ready walked down the stairs and with a short see you walked down to Ke Iki and hopped in The ocean was alive with pulse In short order I found myself offshore Ronnie told me later that as she watched me jump in through the long lens that she immediately lost sight of me She had seen many defining moments through that lens and later said that she thought she had killed me Outside I knew the deal Since the sets were so far and few between and running out

Fitting Sitting back in my office in Ventura California Robb s short and often somewhat cryptic notes and telling photographs of the event were preceded by a question regarding Facebook in China I e mailed him back that it was IP banned there but I would post a few images for him from here In the exchange of e mails that ensued I frequently found myself smiling a bit as I realized that the fruit of Robb s several months intense work in Southern California designing the fashion line were being captured in this show and communicated back to me in real time Head to Toe Havassy The affect was that of having been able to witness something historic Seemingly out of nowhere this young artist had birthed a culture based Men s and Women s apparel line aimed at not his peers but a burgeoning new market that of the young and emerging Chinese youth who he felt were searching for a vehicle to identify with So Robb brought them surfing and his ocean surf and popular culture based art Hand Painted and Crafted The emotions were palpable The line had gone from concept in California to the runway in China in approximately three months That meant a LOT of creative and constructive energy being focused on a myriad amount of aspects regarding international marketing finance and fulfillment in addition to the nuts and bolts of creative interpretation of Art and implementing it into a fashion sensibility that would be both authentic and appeal to the sensibilities of the Chinese Psyche Big project And as is often said the show was an overnight success Robb de la Sol But what many do not realize about the Orange County based artist is that he has a deep background in Fashion Robb has been in shows as a lifestyle fashion model for some of the most well known designers in the fashion industry and worked with the elite menagerie which accompanies that world His close friends run major Corporations in the Action Sports based industry as well He gets it That is a critical understanding to have as one moves forward in this sort of project Then there is the vast depth in his Art pursuits Robb is incredibly prolific and his art is rich with the flavor and sensuality reserved for those who ply the global waters of surfing nature love and life His work exudes all of that So does he It is all intensely magnetic I met Robb in the course of contributing to Surf Story Vol 1 which is an iconic book of surf culture that has proven to define to the world just what authenticity is in surfing Robb simply invited everyone he knew to contribute a story or two and some art or photography and published it all in a book which he laid out personally and then self published as a Limited Edition The Surf Story Project had been a success In fact Volume

board was left by Robb as a sort of gift to the photographer along with a painting and had been used in a shoot Then later copied to a T and placed in stores to help brand and authenticate a company whose modus was borrowing from surfing to brand themselves because in fact contrary to surf theme inspired companies this one was completely disconnected from surfing They were a clothing company They do not surf nor contribute to the culture They take That is their History Robb s experience was simply one of many examples the the Company s branding modus Corporate Disclaimer Here is the funny part On top of coming to Ventura to hang with designer Donna Von Hoesslin and I creative sparks fly work on Surf Story Volume 2 which should publish late 2011 Robb was in town to pick up the first surfboard he had ever shaped which was produced at the shop of Dennis Ryder If you do not know about Dennis you really should Not only is he a historic figure in Ventura Surf Culture but is a pioneer in surfboard design development But Robb was also getting another shaping lesson from me and doing board 2 What got me excited is that he brought two of the bastards up with him I had never seen them You see Robb got those 350 surfboards back AND a small settlement in a suit against that apparel company This was the catalyst for our meeting awhile back Robb and his bastard children It had been the proverbial young David taking on a sage old Goliath Robb had used the proceeds to fund Surfstory Vol 1 his statement on the authenticity of Art and Culture That is a done deal But 350 bastard children remain in a storage unit in OC Robb Donna and I and now some of the leadership in Project Kaisei have been brainstorming concepts whereby we may utilize the bastards which could really now be construed as cultural effluent with faux fin boxes and foam gouges where the company logo was removed and place some value back into the world with his collection of plastic trash This resonates with me because I have built close to 40 000 real surfboards That translates to 40 000 people who developed a relationship with the ocean on something my hands and heart helped conceive These mall store boards Though replicas of Robb s board they were merely store fixtures some even with leash plugs built into odd places to be used for tie down points as the boards sat in malls silent icons to materialism and faux lifestyle whispering sweet lies to all who admired what they thought that the bastards stood for The irony of this hit me instantly when first I heard about Robb Surfboards are symbolic of people surfers They are meant to be magic carpet vehicles to adventure in a watery wonderland We became fast friends of course All of us But
