is the point When we engage our endeavors with creativity and flair and have it matter to us it will make a difference somewhere down the line and matter to others One never knows what results will spring from your diligence and attention to what is right in front of you in your life at this exact instant So I went by Cooke s after the Facebook reparte and the promise of a cupcake from West I picked up two very stunning pineapple upside down beauties glistening with a pineapple reduction glaze West had zero idea what I was up to Now the last time I really shot food was quite awhile ago The shots for another pal of mine wound up in a display at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art He is a great chef and cook as well But I had been hired to shoot some menu items for the restaurant The images developed legs of their own and found a home that I would never have imagined I have had multiple works show in museums around the world and not a one of those instances was by design Some curator happened to notice a burst of inspiration that had I had been standing around holding a camera of some sort for I simply documented the event It serves to illustrate what can happen when you choose to engage a task alight with the realization that it should and could be done well So you personalize the effort I took the confections home having thought about the subject and inspired shot cupcakes Even had a little joke with my editor at Surfer Jean Paul Van Swae about it You won t believe what I am doing JP The short of it is this West s passion for his business and love for his community birthed something new and my own homage to the source of my inspiration That is how we all ought to be inspired by one another I am constantly amazed by the bright lights in my life and am convinced that without their illumination contributions enthusiasm and participation that the world around me would be pretty freaking dark A young photographer who in spite of his low key demeanor has always impressed me with his quiet inner confidence and steady rising glow is Kyle Sparkes His latest blog illustrates a vital aspect of the creative process in a very personal way Here is a great example of creativity and flair produced by TKO Media Thanks to Al Grizwold for pointing it out I grin at just the thought of it Seth Godin has an amazing ability to locate me and you in his daily blog Here is what he has to say regarding cupcakes Think that you have nothing special to bring to the table This quirky music video may convince you otherwise Go ahead do it I know you are stuffed But you will enjoy the results and so will everybody else Have

and has done some sculpture That was the extent of it for the year till an e mail dropped in containing a photo of a smiling Robert standing next to a large object that looked like a beehive I am nothing if not curious I went by the shop where Jessica was busy welding away The piece was a large intricately engineered and fabricated metal sculpture with a value scope that would be hard to measure in dollars Yes it was a lamp Over a period of two visits I documented the final construction and Jessica graciously exposed what an amazing talent she is I needed to know more and the following text was sent to me by her Father artist Stanley Bodner who I had met while working on the Ventura Film Festival Stan Bodner I ll give you some thoughts from my perspective Early on Jessica exhibited her unique view of the world Sometime after serving her toddler ship she asked me what I thought of a miniature drawing that had she made I don t remember what I said exactly it may have been something like That s a cute kitten I do however remember her response She said That s not a kitten daddy You can t see it because your eyes are too big That was the last time anybody ever mistook what she created Jessica s mother Alexandra and I both spent our pre digital lives in front of an easel or behind a drawing table Jessica spent most of her childhood under the drawing table Her summers were spent on the farm with her grandparents Her grandfather was before he retired a welding foreman for Chicago Bridge and Iron He kept a shop in the garage As you know manipulating metal became her chosen media Yes Jessica had an inordinate amount of exposure to Art and media but it would all have been for nothing without her extraordinary talent and desire to create She also had a poem published in grammar school and was a finalist in a statewide public speaking competition Prior to moving west Jessica graduated from The Chicago Academy for the Arts a collage preparatory high school for the arts in Chicago She continued her schooling in LA and San Francisco where she received her BFA There is one additional observation that I would like to share I made an unannounced visit to the principles office at CAA late in her sophomore year The office was adorned exclusively with Jessica s paintings and renderings This had happened before in Jessica s Grade school I hate to use the phrase proud to be in describing my feelings I like lucky to be fits so much better She is The Bodner I am The Bodner s father Mother Alexandra Navickas studied at the Chicago Art Institute and Graduated with a teaching degree from U of Illinois Alex worked as a commercial artist designing and photographing fashion catalogs When Jessica was born Alex

teaches one to look down the line It can also bestow a certain level of gratitude that sadly is often lacking in our culture today Sublime Not many people know these two things about me I have always been a surfboard builder It is a part of my heritage I have built close to 40 000 of them in my life I have hand shaped 15 999 I did a surf and weather report on local radio in Santa Barbara for almost 15 years Rising at 4 30 5 am each day I would do my weather work up check the surf and was a part of a live morning radio show It was fairly common for me to phone the report in from my shaping room in downtown Santa Barbara I did this at approx 7 20 am each day Five and sometimes six days a week That is a lot of surfboards And those were a lot of reports I did them both for the same reason To put something back in to the sport that gave me so much It was about gratitude It was about commitment I do not know how much it mattered in the long run to anyone else but it mattered to me Because if surfing and the ocean benefited me it could positively affect a culture and my community I am just wrapping my seasonal surf work I have never produced so much high bar imagery in a series of 27 days swimming with a camera The Gold Coast where I live that stretch of shore that extends from Gaviota to the Los Angeles County Line has offered up water and weather conditions that were so pristine I set a new bar for my surf work I have a new editor at
