  • A Linchpin Sonnet
launched herself into the task of herding cats that is getting a group of independently creative people together into a succinct point in the space and time continuum for no other apparent reason than to connect personally Seth being an excellent common thread along with his new book Linchpin which most of the invitees would have no doubt read or at the least heard of created the necessary catalyst On Monday in Ventura California our Linchpin meeting took place at a grand old venue that is an Historic Landmark in Ventura and is now known as Candlelight Historic and Light Made perfect sense to hold a Linchpin meeting there Garner who manages Candlelight had even created along with Donna a Linchpin cocktail which was a citrus flavored somewhat tart refreshing concoction served in a martini glass Donna the Linchpin Fifteen minutes into Linchpin 2010 Donna did the spoon to cocktail glass bell call and our group gathered together in a big circle in the large cocktail lounge I had found myself standing next to a seated Colin Black chatting about Waterpolo As the circle of people began to introduce themselves Colin whispered Oh God I am the last one I am going to have to stand up At 6 8 Colin is tall when seated The intros gave us a sense of perspective Funny thing about Linchpins none of us is boring and the things which everyone spoke on were a blend of hilarity and inspiration You could see connection beginning But as in all settings of this sort it was not without a little tension Groups can be like that no matter what they contain As the turns swung round to myself and Colin I simply stepped on the other side of him thereby removing him from the obligation of being last He looked relieved And as 6 8 stood next to 5 5 me and Colin introduced himself something occurred to me Many of us are so self conscious we fail to consider that we are made to fulfill a purpose So as Colin wrapped up and it became my turn to speak I did something laterally and decided to break group convention and protocol by simply resting my head against Colin s side The elevation difference created a burst of laughter and I then chatted about what I would like to have happen as a result of our connecting I would like to see you all succeed That is why I am here I could feel the room relax Minutes later we had gathered together on a big bed outside and snapped a photo or two It was my double entendre message that image Our group Law Enforcement City Leaders Chefs Content Creators Business People Corporate heads Sustainability specialists what an amazing group of leaders who exemplified a vast cross section of culture Many change the world in the course of their work and were all in bed together Right there Connected Everyone mattered on their own

read as Nikon at the time and was getting published regularly using that kit coupled with a Scott Preiss water housing for what wound up being regular swims into lineups throughout California My recollections are crystal clear as is the memory of the day when I packed everything up in a big box except the Preiss housing and 650 lens and dropped it all off at a Camera Store on State St to be sold off on consignment The choices in equipment were slim and not so clear at the time I had examined and spoken with people at Nikon and Canon For about 18 mos I had studied up on the two companies and where I saw professional imaging heading and looked at what I wanted to create In the end I chose Canon These are the reasons The first is that they seemed to be both listening and interested in creation of new technology in the facilitation of my vision Canon Professional Services exhibited a greater sense of care and responsibility to it s community members while Nikon exhibited a pronounced arrogance in Nikon Professional Services Arrogance is expensive I needed service In speaking with Canon and studying I saw where they would take technology and the choice was then quite apparent Nikon had parked I needed a fast and reliable vehicle You see that is what camera systems are methods of transport to our dreams At that time there really only was one choice open to me after looking at all facets and that was Canon I steadily bought in and began to acquire more and better imaging and the tapestry of my work as a result of Canon s collaboration became quite rich and clearly facilitated me becoming one of the leaders in my field of Photography It was the perfect choice as I plied my trade in Motion Picture production News Photojournalism Surf and Nature and Commercial Agency work The imagery I and others in my field created set a new bar for Photography Here is a hilarious video about camera marketing But the very stark reality for me as a creative is that the guy in this video s dreams really were my reality in an expansive career as Canon helped me to realize my dreams and visions As I carefully unboxed the Samsung NX1 this week I thought about my last three years of study on emerging tech I had closely monitored not just the evolution of the mirrorless camera but the advent of a new era where Photographic and Cinematic systems were to merge I was struck by the magnitude of what was going on as I watched Panasonic Sony Fuji Go Pro and some others do what I had predicted revolutionize the game But it was the massive Samsung conglomerate with it s quite recent introduction of the pro level NX1 body and lenses that really stole the show in the dynamics that mattered most I was enchanted by the beautiful

using one for a number of reasons most of those involve wanting to maintain absolute control of how my work looks and being able to reproduce what passed in front of any one of my ridiculously large assortment of lenses in the highest resolution possible Once that is accomplished I archive the original camera raw capture produce final commercial high resolution files and jpeg web resolution imagery and archive those as well Right now I have close to 30 terabytes of active storage most of it cataloged by keywords which cause the image to pop up when I type the keyword into the Finder search box of my MacPro library computer I learned quite some time ago that the iphone was a great device Possibly one of the worst telephones on the market I am using the 4s it has potential to keep us digitally connected in a manner more thorough than any device prior But for me as an artist who must create in word and multiple arts formats this same connectivity is also a complete sell out and potentially fatal to my Art This is why By sheer connection your work in process becomes a reflection of what you see via connection culture and it s low skill devices The reason for this is because consumer based imagery is designed to not be interpretive by the user As a business model it succeeds by being imminently user friendly In fact this has been the logic behind much of Apple s product Development and Marketing which has created the massive profit behemoth that is Apple and it s wonderful devices The point of this blog is to let you all know what I had to do to preserve my artistic integrity I turned my texting off Then I began to keep my phone ringer turned off while thinking Yes I do that praying I do that as well Hanging out with God is a favorite pass time writing editing shooting creating What I learned is that if I give the world unlimited access to me it will conform me to itself and in turn I become a mirror of cultural mores and response In effect my worth as an artist goes down This was an essential lesson for me this process of planned digital disconnect and is what allows my art to survive It is not that I am being selfish It actually is the polar opposite as it involves discipline solitude and desire to build work that matters What matters to me above all is being authentic and that means I operate my tools I never let them operate me Years ago I read all of Isaac Asimov s work One of the most influential works in his library is I Robot Are you No the i thing irony is not lost on i Why would that be a good thing Is it a bad thing Well for me it is the end And i don t like

that I think he has always enjoyed the process of surprising me as well as disturbing the old man Makes me laugh actually when I think about it He is a prodigy I became aware of it when he was quite young seeing a charcoal he had drawn of the Mona Lisa from memory I think he was 6 or 7 at the time Then later hearing him play classical music on an electric piano with no lessons from memory He can do things that I cannot Different inherent tool set than I God does that I enjoy seeing the tool set in each person and how they learn to utilize it to pursue individual visions and dreams I got to watch a little of that the other night at a local bar It was a place which I had not visited in awhile For a number of reasons another story Hey Dad Robin Ryder has gotten me a gig performing at Bombay it is Thursday Josh had said over the phone Oh cool I am around Donna and I will come I can bring a camera What are you going to do I had asked A stripped down set maybe me and Nick my drummer I need to find someone to open Well you could ask Mason Mason Van Valin but he may have a problem performing at a bar since he is 17 Yea lemme talk to Robin and see And that was it Iconization Thursday rolled round and at 9 pm Donna and I were seated towards the front stage which is at the entrance to the bar club Josh was already there with Nick and dressing the stage wearing workout shorts and a sleeveless tee Robin Ryder talented son of a friend of mine was at the mixing board People began to wander in that we knew It was sort of fascinating as different groups arrived The back bar area was having an event for ladies only and women strode in sort of arm in arm Made us smile as we realized what that was about Kind of cool actually considering that we live in a cow and oil town which recently has been headed towards becoming a published center for the Arts At around 10 15 a thin and sort of striking looking guy came up on stage Deftly pulling a guitar out he launched into a smooth set of bluesy rock Matt Zeltzer a friend of Josh s did his music up dashed with a cover of a Stones song It was pretty interesting watching the 24 year old perform You could see where he might go with it Jeans denim shirt old guitar and an easy demeanor he engaged us all It seemed like only moments that Matt was on stage and he was rapidly stuffing the old guitar back into a soft case Matt Zeltzer Josh fronts a concept and group called Love s Secret Domain He has been writing and producing
