    connection of people and ideas but from an infrastructure perspective Instead of maintaining blogs and forums I will be maintaining the hardware on which they re hosted I go into this opportunity as a rookie without any preconceptions of how things should be done eager to learn just like when I first got online to talk about cars image Stefan Vogt BIG CHANGE 2 CHANGING FORMATS A recent survey of people I consider the target demographic for Gearbox Magazine revealed 84 of them still prefer a printed glossy to anything online when it comes to their automotive publications Less than 10 of respondents said they preferred an online modality Sticking with numbers for a moment it also appears only 20 of the people coming to Gearbox Magazine are repeat customers To be honest this hasn t really bothered me as long as both numbers are increasing but it seems like most of our visitors are simply looking for pictures on Google Image search which does kinda bother me Recently I stumbled upon a simple yet exceptional story To me it embodied everything GBXM stands for I shared it with some friends on the backchannel one of which felt so strongly about the story he re ran it on his site What followed was a lengthy conversation the likes of which the social autosphere hasn t seen in a good long time on the other website This bothered me Not that the story ended up somewhere else Not that the people who recognized the importance of it felt compelled to comment on the other site It bothered me that upwards of 5 000 people visit GBXM any given month yet not a one felt a connection with that story and had anything to say about it image typofi WHY EVEN BOTHER

    why the community exists how it impacts the business and what I should be tracking to measure effectiveness We went over this in Social Workplace II Warming Seeing recent traffic data pageviews unique pageviews average time on site bounce exit rates can help me complete the effectiveness equation but these are not effectiveness metrics They are insights which should help me correlate action and reaction on the way to measuring effectiveness PAYING ATTENTION If I see traffic and time on site are up in the last two weeks and bounce rate is down the first question to ask is why If I see several new discussions were posted in my community in that time I can start thinking about effectiveness alright but only in as much as it relates to the effectiveness of those topics to generate traffic The effectiveness of my community is more than that BACK TO WHY Why did we launch this community to begin with Was it to reduce service desk call volume through greater self service options Was it to improve customer satisfaction scores by accelerating front line staff access to information We need to measure those things relative usage metrics like traffic Is there

    the same tired advertising driven shit I want to show them how they re more important than the bulk of the paraphrased press release bullshit they read online elsewhere by reporting on the exceptionalism in them Still They prefer print They prefer a one way product Why am I not moving toward delivering HOW Launching a printed magazine is no small feat And my bootstrapper mentality doesn t want to source external funding to do so I don t want GBXM beholden to anyone who is in it for the profits above all else The picture above is a screen capture from a Flash based virtual magazine called Road which is published on a platform called Issuu Issuu takes the PDF I would create which would more closely resemble a magazine converts it to Flash and hosts it securely allowing me to embed it elsewhere or leave it available on their site Issuu is free but the free version gets advertising down the sidebar The good news is for a reasonable monthly fee I can provide an ad free experience for my readers If you click this link you can take a spin through that issue of Road with the Ariel Atom in it pictured above It looks great on a larger screen but I m not entirely sure how I feel about the experience on a mobile phone and I don t have a tablet yet WHAT What I m trying to figure out is probably something the big publishers have been struggling with recently themselves How do we publish a product with the look and feel of a traditional magazine which also looks great on smaller mobile screens Of course I m also thinking about how to shift GBXM to a format which starts digital but could eventually

    to take to utilize this idea Again wastegating It s a word now I have things I m committed to doing today so I create an action item to force me to reconsider it at a more appropriate time in the future This is loosely inspired by the real Action Method I read about during the flight back from London last month Once I ve accomplished something THEN I go back and look at all those brilliant ideas I had previously Talk is cheap I want to DO more THE BIG IDEA S The Short List GBXM World Tour 2012 coverage In the last couple weeks I ve written well over 12 000 words relating the stories from our recent trip to Europe called Gearbox Magazine World Tour 2012 over on GBXM Here s a link to the tag 2013 Arizona Hot Seat Time This is an event I ve started discussing online with a guy I met on a local discussion forum We re going to meet in the next week or so to start figuring out what we need to do to pull this thing off the way we re envisioning it Gearbox Magazine Magazine The site could use a remodel that s for sure but what if we switched to a monthly publication that looked more like a magazine I m thinking about possibly running a month s worth of stories all at once instead of piecemeal Global Connectivity for Gearheads How do we make time to develop content for Gearbox United which encourages and facilitates greater interpersonal connections among gearheads on a global scale What can we do to help enthusiasts get out and explore the world me somewhere between England and France June 2012 BUT WAIT THERE S MORE In addition to the above priorities
