    and negated because well that s they way we ve always done it BONUS Nearly ten years ago the company which owned most of the building we re in let me go because I spent too much time on Instant Messenger read as much as everyone else around me who wasn t contract Just before I went on paternity leave I found myself on the roof of the building doing a monthly environmental inspection We now own the entire building the other company went under years ago GBXM 3 0 I completed the second major remodel of Gearbox Magazine since founding it in September 2009 It looks a lot sharper now though there are still some technical bugs to work out The new design isn t as elegant as I would like and besides I ve recently decided we re going to shift to a subscribers only model with an eye on eventually expanding into print before too long so it is what it is Also for some reason my Dutch partner Dennis stopped returning my emails I see him pop up on Twitter or Facebook from time to time so I suspect he s alright all that matters I guess but it looks like I m back to flying pretty much solo on the magazine project Big changes are ahead though More on that later RALLY This time of year since 2005 has found me at the Prescott Rally volunteering in some capacity This year I worked as service crew for my Rallynotes friends Kris and Christine Would you believe that it was crewing for them in 2005 which inspired me to buy my first Galant VR4 to build into my own rally car yet Kris has since completed the build of his second rally car in the time it s taken me to get mine stripped to a bare shell It s almost shameful but whatchagonnado GBXM comes first imo In any case we had a great time at the rally this year Kris and Christine had a strut fail in the right rear corner of the car negatively impacting the overall handling yet they still traded times all weekend with Eddie Fiorelli and Tom Smith in the VW GTI ultimately coming in second by something like four seconds ROOF RACK Like I said I bought my first GVR4 because of the Prescott Rally but I also bought my second GVR4 because of the Prescott Rally I came across a guy named Roger up there a couple years ago who was selling his I ended up daily driving it for a few years before selling it to buy my Pajero Would you believe Roger now has a couple Pajeros of his own I snagged a smoking deal on a roof rack for my little funcooker PUBLISHED I ve been blogging here since something like 2004 and I ve been publishing on GBXM since 2009 but it was something else to hold a high quality printed magazine in my

    out the old oil pump I bet there s one ore more of these things stuck in it Seriously This is NOT okay After meticulously inspecting every nook and cranny in the head for more I got all these out Crazy Mystery fail casting balls eliminated I cleaned out the rocker assembly bolt holes Didn t have the right tape to chase the threads at the house so I used Q tips to get down in there and soak up the oil Looks like someone got lazy tapping these holes too This head was a ticking time bomb I m kinda disappointed Oh well Pressing on regardless I m sure some folks out there will shudder at the next pictures I took great care not to nick or scratch the head gasket mating surface I did not get the head milled but took a wire brush and some 1000 grit sandpaper to the combustion chambers Even tried my hand at some very mild Somender Singh grooves This is a 100hp engine getting a copper coated composite head gasket It s not going to see any boost pressure or anything extreme like that so I m not particularly worried I know some people will call this cutting corners and on some levels it is but these steps were a calculated risk on my part I m more curious about what if anything will come of this Shame I didn t take before and after pictures like I usually do All the combustion chambers were caked with carbon deposits I spent about two hours carefully cleaning them up by hand using a pick to scrape away the buildup around the valve faces and spark plugs and a wire brush drill bit in my hand not the drill to sweep the rest of
