album All Eternals Deck his first for hometown kingpins Merge Records he s the rare 90s survivor making his best music in his career s second decade What was it like where you grew up As a little kid I lived in San Luis Obispo California which kinda had a hippie population in the early 70s Eventually I lived in Claremont which was not cool by L A standards but it is a cool little college town It s where David Foster Wallace spent the last six years of his life Did you feel connected to music and art there or did you feel isolated from it There s a lot of music culture in Claremont At my high school there were always kids carrying acoustic guitars around which is why I named my band the Mountain Goats I didn t want to seem like one of those guys who brought his guitar to the party whether you asked him to or not You re not the guy who busted it out No I m still massively uncomfortable with that It doesn t happen as much as it used to but I used to be in airports out on tour and people would be like Hey play me something No what I do is not really like that They always assume you re just shy like Oh no I m sure it s great And I m like No no really no Your 2005 album The Sunset Tree is about your experiences with domestic violence at the hands of your stepfather If you could have told your 12 year old self This will pass would you have believed you Nope People told me that all the time and it s not something you need to hear Because it doesn t matter Someday you won t be hungry is not something you tell a hungry person You have to break it down so that you re telling yourself It gets better by the end of the day It gets better in half an hour I didn t believe I was going to live to see 21 Your drug period didn t necessarily coincide with your music making period No it didn t Those were not creative times for me I was writing poetry and the Mountain Goats was an outgrowth of that But the idea of drug fueled creativity is weird to me because I think a proper addict puts his creativity into his using Why should I worry about making something when I could be getting high You can t court two mistresses you know I was sober by the time I started doing the Mountain Goats In fact there was actually a period of five years when I was clean on all fronts except for cigarettes and coffee I wouldn t even have a beer at all until I got into touring You wound up having a beer once you got on tour Your first two releases were on

like Nothing so I asked do you want to come and record and she said Oh totally So it just sort of happened where I didn t know if it was going to happen or not but if it does I m like sweet It s funny because there s been a lot of hoopla about her appearing on No Color but the first two cuts we ve heard Black Night and Don t Stop she doesn t even appear on Is that you guys keeping us in suspense or is that just how it panned out laughs It wasn t intentional I mean people were definitely making a big deal that she was going to be singing on our record but it wasn t our intention to be like Oh hey we have Neko Case on this record and use that as a big marketing ploy It s a pretty mellow appearance It s cool because she tweeted how Don t Stop is her favorite cut off the album and she s not even on it I think that just kind of shows what a big fan she is of you guys Totally it was really sweet of her to do that She sings on about five songs and there s songs when she kind of takes over Her voice is so huge but all of the songs she blends in really well with our sound fw promo display none You ve been reported stating your love for Billy Corgan style riffs and said you were going to implement that a lot more on this album Ahhh yeah it was an accident that it sort of happened and that reference got a lot of attention I mean I love Billy Corgan s guitar playing When we were recording the album we had a lot of extra time to sort of goof around and try different things and playing electric guitar became the thing we all looked forward to the most because it really changed the sound of the songs It became pretty funny cause I hadn t played electric guitar since I was like 12 or 13 listening to all those 90 s bands It was like totally going back in time and you know I had the best time doing it but everyone else in the studio was cracking up laughs It was totally 90 s That s awesome But you guys have played some heavy riffs before Joe s Waltz and Small Deaths have some pretty heavy guitar riffs so this didn t come entirely as a surprise Yeah those were kind of accidents and this started out as an accident but then when I found the tone of Billy Corgan s guitar we started cracking up since it reminded me of it but it sounded really good over the stuff I mean every time we were in the studio and we were like what should we do I said Let s get the Billy Corgan out

a dolphin through the forest laughs It s funny that we can have these wild dreams then go to work the next day and take ourselves really seriously and act like we weren t just riding a dolphin There s a lot of that laughing at the world and cursing it for not letting me take myself seriously I had such a funny psychologically explicit dream last night Do you want to hear it Yeah I knew I had a full day of press today So I had a dream where lightning struck near to where I lived and everything was the same but slightly roughed up around the edges slightly shredded and someone came up with a paper saying You ve gotta read this it s so good but every page was shredded and ripped and I could never get there It s hard being suddenly judged Even when it s nice I m like Don t pay too much attention Don t pay too much attention Wow What do you think that means I ve done my goofy thing for a while with no one watching And now people are watching and it s like Woah I read a review that was supposed to be nice I think but it was very backhanded with its compliments And I was like What have you done It s hard being suddenly judged Even when it s nice I m like Don t pay too much attention Don t pay too much attention It s strange that artists have to be oblivious to the opinions of the world but then super sensitive to the world around them Yeah Because you ve got to sensitive to the world enough to make observations about the world that actually mean something It would be hard if I weren t so proud of what I ve made You d be screwed all the criticism would feel right But when people don t see what I see when I look at it Laughs I pity them Poor them Exactly But you can t please everyone Especially when you re laughing in a world of people crying Or crying in a world of people laughing which sometimes I get confused How do you mean I feel like what I made is pretty sincere Even the humour is not meant to be ironic so many things right now are campy or nostalgic or ironic and it all falls into that overflowing pool of stuff that is taking the piss as you would say I feel like it s people not taking responsibility for making what they make Maybe it s a result of how over saturated the word is now with popular culture a defense mechanism and an urge to still feel in control of the content Despite feeling inundated with media they can still maintain a sense of control Does that make sense Absolutely What this person has made is meaningless compared to my ability to take
