    sponsored by the U S Army Many thanks to them for letting us post it here DataSet Object Format The file SWRI Diesel NIR zip contains a mat file which can be loaded into MATLAB This mat file contains two dataset objects One includes all the raw unpreprocessed spectra diesel spec and another that is all the properties diesel prop Some of the properties are not measured on some of the samples so diesel prop has some missing values NaNs in it The wavelength axis is included as axisscale in the diesel spec If you don t have PLS Toolbox or our freeware for the DataSet Object these two variables should turn into structures when you load them into MATLAB Name Size Kind Last Modified SWRI Diesel NIR zip 1 443K document Mon Nov 28 2005 11 28 AM Standard Matlab Variable Format The following are zip files of separate mat files each with standard Matlab variables containing the same data as above There are 6 workspace variables in each file 3 for the spectra and 3 matching ones for the property value In each case the data includes 20 high leverage samples hl and the remaining samples are split into two random groups ll a and ll b These spectra can be used to test variable selection and calibration algorithms For instance you can use the high leverage samples and one of the other sets to make a calibration model say the hl and ll a then test it on the third set the ll b In all cases the data have been pretty thoroughly weeded outliers removed and all samples belong to the same class all summer fuels no winter fuels All of the files end in GATEST because we ve used the data to test genetic algorithms

  • Orthogonal Signal Correction
    a PLS model In situations where the a PLS model captures a very large amount of predictor block X variance in the first factor but gets very little of the predicted variable y or Y it can be very helpful In these cases it is useful to remove extraneous variance from X that is unrelated to y OSC does this by finding directions in X that describe large amounts of variance while being orthogonal to y Models are built on OSC corrected data then the OSC correction is applied before application of the PLS models to new data In the example shown below some NIR of diesel fuels is loaded into the workspace along with the reference viscosity values A calibration set is produced and one and two factor OSC corrections are calculated PLS models are then built on the raw data and the OSC corrected data Note how the PLS model built on OSC corrected data grabs a much larger amount of y variance in the first factor The correction is then applied to the test data and new predictions are made from the models A comparison of the prediction errors on a separate test show that OSC was

    they are with each other A modified k nearest neighbor algorithm is used to reorder the variables An example of its use is shown below Here the data file plsdata was loaded into the MATLAB workspace The plsdata file contains data from a slurry fed ceramic melter process for solidifying the reprocessing wastes from nuclear fuels yes I know that this example is a bit unusual The variable xblock1 contains 300 observations of the 20 temperatures measured within the melter The variable yblock1 contains the molten glass level at each time The MATLAB command window shows the functions that were called to develop a correlation map of the 20 temperatures plus the level Note it is generally much easier to write a small script to make up labels rather than writing it on the command line When the function is called it produces the plot shown in the second figure Temperatures are labeled L for left side of the melter R for right numbered from 1 at the bottom to 0 at the top the level is LV Note how the variables have been arranged so that the highly correlated ones are near each other in the figure producing a
