  • What are transmission line parameters?
    direction This is always true for high frequency signals The inductance calculated here is the sum of the partial inductance of signal trace and ground planes Wave Impedance This parameter is the most difficult to understand but at the same time the most important one for high speed signaling At high frequencies the signal travels along the signal trace as an electromagnetic wave The form and strength of the electric field and magnetic field are determined by the geometry of the transmission line and the material properties of the dielectricum The signal voltage and the signal current now follow the electrical and magnetical fields As a surprising result there is a fixed ratio of voltage and current of any signal wave travelling along the signal trace It is not possible to inject a signal with any other ratio of voltage and current If you would try to do so this signal would be splitted into two signals One signal with the fixed ratio would travel along the signal the second signal would be reflected Of course the sum of both signals would be the signal you tried to inject into the transmission line In the electronic world a ratio of

    informational purposes only The third value is the elapsed time You may want to look at this value if you compare the speed of different Macintosh models The fourth value QS QM is a criteria for the remaining errors of the iteration step This value is used to end the iteration To understand this value you have to be aware that avery electrical field in the surrounding of a metallic conductor induces some electrical charge at the surface of this conductor Q S is the induced charge at the surface of the signal trace Q M is the induced charge at the surface of both ground planes In the real world these charges are balanced which means that Q S and Q M have exactly the same value In the world of our calculation in the beginning of the iteration the charges are not balanced at all To be honest Q S is very large and Q M is zero Of course this is far away from a correct result But the good news is that with every iteration step the finite elements array is getting more and more similiar to the real world The program Maxwell s Dream monitors this similiarity by looking at the ratio of Q S and Q M If this ratio is equal to 1 the result is perfect As you can see the snapshot shown above is somewhere in the beginning of a iteration The snapshot below is taken after the completion of an iteration The fifth value QM QB is not used to terminate the iteration It is a proof whether the calculation in a bounded area has the same result as you would expect from the unlimited and unbounded area of a real triplate You can find more on this topic in

    has no losses and the resistance of the signal and ground planes is zero Electric borders left and right of the signal trace To speed up the calculation an electrical border is introduced both at the right and left side of the calculated cross area of the triplate These artificial ground planes at the right and left side increase the capacitance of the calculated triplate compared to the real one At the beginning of the calculation the position of these electrical borders is chosen automatically for you If you are sceptical about this automatism you can look at the calculation monitor The parameter Q b Q m tells you how large the influence of the artificial electrical borders is Q b is the induced charge at these borders and Q m is the induced charge at the real ground planes top and bottom If there is no calculation error introduced by these borders at the left and right the ratio Q b Q m would be zero If the ratio is a non zero value an error is introduced by the artificial borders But the error by the artificial borders is much smaller than the value of Q b Q m Therefore the value of 0 01 given in this example is a very good value because the error introduced by the artificial borders will be much lower than 1 The grid The finite elements analysis divides the space between the signal trace and the ground planes into an array of elements If this grid is too coarse fine details of the electrical field can no longer be modelled If the grid is too fine calculation time is increased dramatically Maxwell s Dream takes automatically care to choose a proper grid If you have some doubts you can increase the
