  • Reference: Plone Overview
you can run a command to start everything Within a Zope client you can create a Plone instance or several Plone instances A Zope client can exist on a separate machine and or IP address A Plone site also called a Plone instance is the front end for a Zope site using the CMFPlone product To add a Plone site go into the ZMI usually something like http 192 168 1 150 8090 manage by selecting Plone site in the dropdown box on the right side Plone Site Setup is the control panel web page on both Plone and Enfold Server A link to Plone Site Setup should appear at the top right side of the page if the logged in user possessing Manager or Zope administrator privileges Typically the options that appear on this panel are specific to Plone or Enfold Server However a link to the ZMI see above also is here The Plone Unified Installer is an executable which installs Zope ZEO and includes the CMFPlone product to make Plone instances This is the open source version which doesn t include the features added by Enfold Server See differences between Plone and Enfold Server Enfold Server is a Windows only version of Plone which let you create multiple Zope clients on the machine It uses only one ZODB See differences between Plone and Enfold Server A product is a plugin written in python which can be dropped inside the Products directory of the install This product typically adds extra functionality Plone itself specifically CMFPlone is a product within Zope Note although products are still frequently used for Plone Plone 3x is starting to emphasize the use of buildout and python eggs over using products Encontrol is the desktop utility installed along with Enfold Server also called the Enfold Server configuration utility This tool lets you restart Enfold Server change ports and add Zope clients Note Enfold Server is configured to start automatically upon startup so you don t need to start Enfold Server using Encontrol Read more about Encontrol Planning Your Deployment Selecting Hardware In general adding RAM and hardware can be the fastest and easiest way to improve basic Plone performance Once a load balancing and zeo infrastructure is in place the process of adding hardware is not hard Generally the rule of thumb is to have one Zope client per processor on your machine For example if your machine has two processors then it is suitable for two Zope clients You can also put Zope clients for the same Zope on separate machines RAM A Zope client can support several Plone instances The number of Plone instances you can support per Zope client depends mainly on available RAM Here are general guidelines 1 For read intensive Plone instances 1 gigabyte of RAM is sufficient A read intensive operation is one where the web surfer is reading a web page but not making modifications 2 For write intensive Plone instances 2 gigabytes of RAM is sufficient

  • Upgrading & Uninstalling
rule of thumb is to try to upgrade your third party products before you upgrade Enfold Server This assumes that a later product version will work on an earlier version of Plone which may not always be true The good news is that it s fairly easy on the Plone org site to check which versions of a product are compatible with a particular Plone version In some cases the product may work even though it is not documented on Plone org and vice versa Generally though if the product page on Plone org shows that the product supports the Plone version included with Enfold Server that is a promising sign If you already anticipate compatibility problems you can do the upgrade while leaving out all third party products out Then you can add one third party product at a time and see if it works This trial and error method is reliable but time consuming especially if you are using lots of third party products In the majority of cases it may not even be necessary Another idea is to create a test bed machine where you can see if Enfold Server works with your third party products This can be helpful if you want extra assurance that downtime will be minimized To do this you d need to install Plone or Enfold Server elsewhere copy the Data fs file and other files to the second machine and see if it works That affords a level of safety but it also involves a lot of time and preparation It may be easier and faster to do a quick check for compatibility on the product pages install everything while leaving out what seems to be incompatible and debugging if the need arises Make sure you have backed up your product directory It might also be helpful for your records to copy the version numbers of each product you installed A brief list of installed products is available on the Control Panel Products tab in the Zope Management Interface Check the project page to learn whether your product is compatible with this version of Plone or whether a later version of the same product is available Sometimes this information will not be easy to find If newer versions are available you should try to install them on your server before upgrading Try installing all your products into the Products directory If there are products you know are likely to cause problems you might remove them temporarily Restart Zope Plone and go to your Plone site something like http localhost 8080 Plone Can you still see the main page If not check the debugging section below Tip If your Plone site is inaccessible you will still be able to access the ZMI by going to http localhost 8080 manage The ZMI not only lets you view debug information but lets you see product versions of everything Check the ZMI Control Panel Product Management Verify that your third party products are still functioning

  • Enfold Server: Introduction
Enfold Proxy handles both tasks and works with Enfold Server Read more about Enfold Proxy Enfold Server integrates into Windows The Windows service user running the Plone service can be a domain user and can authenticate through Active Directory Enfold Server can be restarted stopped using Services on the Windows control panel See What is a Service User Although Enfold Server reports the same logs as Plone Z2 log event log and audit log you can configure schedule them using the Encontrol utility and Windows Scheduled Tasks See viewing log files Enfold Server installs with a backup script and database packing script which are run at regular intervals Although Enfold Server lets you create more than one Zope client you can only create one ZEO server and thus one ZODB per machine Read more about ZEO Enfold Server includes several debugging tools for Windows most notably Plone debug client which lets you interact directly with the ZODB while the site is running See Plone debug client Compatibility Enfold Server 4 0 supports upgrades from Enfold Server 3 0 Also it supports ZODB imports from Plone 3 0 Read more about upgrading Enfold specific products Enfold Server ES offers not only a way to run Plone in a Windows server environment it offers additional features as products These products are put inside the Products directory by default You can enable disable configure these products with the Site Setup link when logged in as Administrator to the website Chasseur is the product to set up caching profiles in Enfold Server installed by default This product is required to set up caching and improve site performance Learn how to set up caching profiles Unless you are installing a separate caching product like CacheFu you should probably keep this enabled Plasma is a product to allow you to set up authentication profiles This lets you use domain authentication LDAP single sign on etc Read more about authentication profiles ShellEx Server is a Plone product created by Enfold which enables support for Enfold Desktop a tool that helps content creators who run Windows Although available as a free download for generic Plone installations it is installed by default for Enfold Server See http www enfoldsystems com Products Desktop The Plone site setup has a configuration menu for global Enfold Desktop settings see Using Enfold Desktop IFilter Integration is a feature that lets uploaded files to be automatically indexed Read more about using IFilters Enfold Theme is a set of styles and colors designed by Enfold It is included as a separate proprietary product which enhances the default Plone theme Because it does not have all the components of a Plone theme it will not show up as a separate theme choice in Plone Site Setup Themes To deactivate this Enfold customized theme log in to Plone and go to site setup Add Remove Products and uninstall the Enfold Theme Alternatively if you wish to activate reactivate these theme customizations simply go to Add Remove Products

  • Using Encontrol
the first client If the two clients are started or restarted too close in time to one another the second client might not initialize properly and need to be restarted Changing Ports To change the ZEO client in Enfold Server Configuration Utility go to Client Ports in use To change the ZEO server in Enfold Server Configuration Utility go to Server ZEO Ports and change the port After changing these ports you will need to restart the respective ZEO instances For example if you change the ZEO client port then you will need to restart that instance After changing the port you will be able to access the website directly through the management port i e http localhost 8080 This will let you access the Zope Management Interface ZMI Usually the Plone site exists underneath this i e http localhost 8081 Plone If you add a second Plone site see Adding a Second Plone Site the path may be different i e http localhost 8081 anotherPlone Typically administrators run a proxy such as Enfold Proxy Apache mod proxy or Squid to remap URLs so that it receives requests from the standard port 80 This proxy mechanism will make the http localhost request equivalent to http localhost 8080 Plone Ports in Use The Encontrol utility lets you view and edit port settings easily for the Server and Client Enfold Server is a web application server that is designed to be proxied behind another web server such as IIS or Apache Requests would come in from an external source to that web server and be proxied on to Plone ZEO Port this is how ZEO Servers and Zope Clients communicate HTTP Port By default this port is disabled for port 80 Typically people running Enfold Server will use Enfold Proxy or VHM to re map port 8080 requests to a domain at port 80 Each client uses a different management port usually 8080 8081 8082 etc to return requests to the user s browser Even though you can re map a port 8080 request i e http localhost 8080 to an Internet host i e http originalfunsite com in fact accessing both URLs will produce the same result Changing the port used to communicate can also be done in the zope conf and zeo conf files in your installation Port and Firewall recommendations Each Zope client needs to have a unique management port and a port being assigned to a Zope client is already being used that client will not start You need to change the management port in order to start Enfold again Generally your firewall should block all ports to the server except the ports you require for administration i e the Zope management ports Make sure that your Proxy server is aware of the management port which is responding to HTTP requests Typical Configuration Firewall allows HTTP requests into IIS on port 80 while requests to the Enfold Server are blocked Server with IIS listens to port 80 proxying

  • Users & Server Security
if the account is compromised should be used solely to perform Plone Enfold tasks like backup logging and ZODB packing on Windows See this note about running Scheduled Tasks on Windows 2003 Local System Account This kind of user account is a builtin Windows account with administrative privileges Using the same Windows account you installed ES with as the service user is not recommended Use for testing environments only not for production use Local Machine Account Recommended if the server won t need to log onto the Windows domain This is a separate user account from the user installing Enfold Server If you choose this option you will see two additional options Create New Account ES will provide a user name starting with ZRUNNER and you need merely to create a password If you lose it you can create another local machine account later This assumes that the current logged in user has the ability to create a local system account Generally it is easy to create a new local account when you are not logging onto a domain Use Existing Account This option will allow you to provide data about the user name and account Domain user Recommended if you are logged onto a domain via Active Directory Create New Account This requires that the domain user have the ability to create new users on the Active Directory Use Existing Account This requires that you obtain account information for another domain user You can obtain account information from your AD administrator Note for security reasons the AD Administrator account cannot be the service user who runs Enfold Server If the service user is also a domain user and hence listed in AD this user will have the ability to login to a Plone site as an authenticated domain user However this service user will have no special privileges i e he or she will lack access to the Plone Site Setup menu If you want to promote a domain user to have access to Plone site setup essentially giving him Admin or Manager privileges you will need to assign this user to an AD group and map this group to the Zope role of Manager See assigning roles to groups See also problems configuring the service user Assigning Roles to Plone Users After a domain user or local user has the ability to sign in to a Plone account the next step is assigning this user a role to play on the website A role is a set of rights and permissions to create edit delete publish content Example of roles contributor editor reader reviewer manager Read more about assigning roles to Plone users Giving a Domain User Local Administrator Privileges The user who installs Enfold Server needs to have Administrator privileges to complete the installation and set up scheduled tasks A Windows domain user might not have this ability Here are steps to give a domain user local Administrator rights on the local machine You need the Administrator
