  • Tackling obesity and Non Communicable Diseases
    Al 2005 According to WHO it was estimated in 2005 that from 58 million deaths from all causes chronic diseases including stroke cancer chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes would have accounted for 35 million deaths This is double the number of deaths from all infectious diseases maternal and perinatal conditions and nutritional deficiencies combined WHO 2004 Prevention An urgent need A healthier diet and more physical activity To overcome the epidemic of chronic diseases WHO recommends in the WHO Global Strategy on Diet Physical Activity and Health to improve lifestyle by promoting healthy diet more physical activity and implementing smoking cessation programmes in all socio economical settings WHO 2004 According to WHO approximately 80 of cases of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes and 40 of cancers could be prevented by a healthy diet regular physical activity and giving up smoking which is responsible for at least 5 million deaths a year At European Level On 15th March 2005 Marcos Kyprianou Former European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection announced the launch of a European diet and exercise action platform to counteract obesity The EU action platform we re currently launching is Europe s contribution to the fight against this problem Businesses civil society and the public authorities must work together to arrest the advance of obesity in our children At the beginning of 2007 in the White Paper entitled A strategy for Europe on Nutrition Overweight and Obesity related health issues the European Commission defined an integrated European initiative both at national and local levels to promote community strategies for the fight against obesity Commission of European Communities 2007 Obesity first and foremost a lifestyle related behavioural pathology Obesity has been broadly documented as a multi factoral epidemic related to social economic and environmental determinants of people s lifestyles

  • Key Partners in EEN programme
    for Health and Consumers EAHC More information Four major European universities and collaborating partners Four European universities work throughout the three years of the project to enrich the EPODE methodology Four committees each one headed by one of the Universities hold meetings with collaborating partners and invite experts bringing multidisciplinary expertise to the field of food and physical activity related behaviours childhood obesity social marketing public and private partnerships The Committee for the Involvement of Political Representatives chaired by Professor Stefaan de Henauw of Ghent University Belgium is responsible for the development of recommendations regarding the required political involvement in the support of local long term and multistakeholder approaches The Committee for Scientific Monitoring Evaluation and Dissemination chaired by Professor Jaap Seidell of Free University Amsterdam maps reviews and analyzes the existing evaluation schemes applied to childhood obesity prevention CBIs in order to enrich the evaluation process implemented in the EPODE methodology The Methods and Social Marketing Techniques Committee studies how network dynamics and social marketing approaches can be adapted to childhood obesity and non communicable disease prevention The committee considers the environmental and behavioural determinants of obesity and being overweight and the corresponding levers and tools necessary to facilitate changes Professor Luis Moreno of the University of Zaragoza Spain chairs this committee Finally the Public Private Partnerships Committee chaired by Professor Monique Romon of Lille 2 University France focuses on public and private partnerships PPP in the field of obesity prevention CBIs including the ethical legal and technical aspects The committee proposes a Commitment Charter to be signed by potential relevant stakeholders willing to be involved in the setting up of an EPODE similar initiative in another country The Network would be pleased to involve other interested parties in this major health project and can be contacted click here

    co director of the EPODE programme and the EPODE European Network Pierre Richard EPODE and EEN Management is associate Director of Proteines Group Specialized in Marketing and Communication he has been working for the last 20 years within Major Food Companies and Communication Agencies Pierre Richard is particularly in charge of the strategic development of the EPODE European Network Media relations and visibility and relationship with the private partners of the project Yann Le Bodo EEN Coordinator Engineer in food processing and holder of a Master s Degree in Social Sciences applied to food Yann specialises in the study of the social determinants of obesity in developed countries He joined Protéines in 2007 to coordinate the EPODE European Network Protéines is a consultancy company specialised in health strategies network dynamics and social marketing Beside its traditional consulting activity for the private sector Protéines has developed during the past 15 years a specific expertise in setting up prevention programmes and collaborating in the conception implementation of prevention strategies for public institutions and NGOs Protéines has an affiliate in Belgium and often works with collaborating partners all over Europe Prev Next EEN Partners EEN coordinating team assisted by Institutional support Associated universities
