The real story behind this victory is the grassroots nature of this campaign When thousands of doctors began saying B is Bad it affected their families staffs and patients Thousands of Michigan residents work for volunteer with or have been served by hospice programs The hospice movement s unequivocal message against B moved thousands of votes The disability rights community denounced Proposal B and their circle of influence pushed thousands more NO votes When Jewish Muslim Protestant and Catholic leaders spoke out for true compassion hundreds of thousands took it to heart You cannot drive anywhere in the state without seeing a flood of NO on B yard signs That s a telling expression of citizen democracy This was a campaign by the people for the people Surely the vote on Proposal B does not signal the end of the debate on assisted suicide Some might argue that if B weren t so badly written or if the proponents would have waged a better campaign the outcome could have been different But such speculation misses the message of this vote Michigan wants compassion and comfort for those facing their final days They don t want death bureaucracies or manipulations of

  • Michigan Campaign Against Assisted Suicide
Cardinal Adam Maida and others argued against the proposal that would allow doctors in some cases to prescribe a lethal dose of medication for terminally ill patients wishing to kill themselves Maida said he found the proposal disastrous both as a religious man and as an attorney He said the proposal was ambiguous and would pressure some people into choosing assisted suicide I assure you the most frequent victims will be the poor the disenfranchised those without voice and the minorities in our society he said Speaking after the news conference Maida said some people may feel forced to choose suicide if their Medicaid or welfare is cut Your alternative is suicide he said It may not come out black and white but there will be pressure to make the right decision Dr Walter Hunter of the Michigan State Medical Society works as a hospice physician He said Michigan should aim to improve its end of life care instead of legalizing physician assisted suicide Imam Abdullah Bey El Amin of the Muslim Center of Detroit said virtually all Muslims in the Detroit area oppose the proposal Why Because the sanctity of life he said You didn t give the life Therefore you have no right to take it away Dr Maureen A Fay of the University of Detroit Mercy said she was concerned about how the proposal if passed would be regulated She also criticized the proposal for allowing physicians to list terminal illness as cause of death on death certificates This in effect creates false information on death certificates she said This does not account to true government Source The Pro Life Infonet a daily compilation of pro life news and educational information To subscribe send the message subscribe to infonet list request lists prolife org Infonet is sponsored

  • Michigan Hospice Organization Expresses Concern Over Physician-Assisted Suicide Ballot Proposal
unique to hospice care patients who elect hospice receive treatment for all their concerns Hospice care givers have discovered three central reasons a terminally ill person may want to discuss suicide One is a fear of uncontrolled pain Another is fear of abandonment of being left alone to die and feeling there is no one to care The third is concern over financial pressures that may leave a family devastated by the last illness Hospice addresses these concerns as quickly in the disease process as is possible and hospice workers everywhere will tell the public that when these issues are under control the desire to end one s life becomes a non issue Hospice workers dedicate their professional and often their personal lives to successfully resolving those issues The hospice community is very concerned that the legalization of physician assisted suicide will provide an option that will prevent people with a serious illness from seeking proper help and from discovering the goodness of life that can be found even while dying The MHO is also concerned that the legalization of physician assisted suicide will cause the ill elderly to begin to feel an obligation to die when they consider themselves no longer productive to society Providing a legal option to end one s life as soon as an illness becomes terminal will certainty put heavy pressure on older citizens who must rely on others for their care And if that option were chosen what a loss to their children and grandchildren The ballot proposal establishes the physician as the legal assister We are aware of many many physicians thousands in Michigan who do not wish to be named as the source of assistance if such a proposal should become law Physicians who do not want this task state that it
