  • Utah Mom Finally Finds Healing and Forgiveness After Abortion
one day see those children again Do they fear such a reunion and wonder what they ll say How do the surviving children cope I ve already talked to my children about my choices and what I did They all know and we ve cried and I asked them to forgive me for aborting their brother and sister I think it was a hard thing and they know we don t believe in it but it was a choice I made way back They have forgiven me and now see what I m able to gain through the privilege of ministering to other women who are where I was Seeing my babies again is something I really look forward to and it s going to be wonderful I think they already know why I made the decision I made and it s OK There s a CD we use as part of the group that includes a song called The Choice by a woman who went through this herself One of the verses is the child talking to his mother and it says I don t remember why I never had the chance to be in your arms I believe we will have that conversation and we ll just hold each other and there will be no more pain or tears Moderator s Note The following is part two of a two part special on providing hope and healing to women who have experienced the pain of abortion and desire reconciliation and forgiveness Salt Lake City UT The women stand silently outside the old home heads slowly rising with the pink and blue helium balloons that have escaped their grasp and ascend skyward Sherry Semchuck is surrounded by children Sarah left Sam and Grace Semchuck who had two abortions as a teen teaches classes at the Pregnancy Resource Center Bobbing lightly on the breeze each balloon s buoyancy belies the burden it represents to a woman who has carried her secret sorrow for years even decades inside her heart Pink for girls blue for boys the balloons represent the children that once were conceived inside each woman and then for a variety of reasons aborted And their trip to the heavens is the final letting go a goodbye to the initial denial and then the anguish that has trapped and tormented the women all these years As the string slips through each woman s fingers it becomes a physical emotional and spiritual release that says I ve owned my actions I ve grieved over the child that never was born and though I ll never forget I will forgive myself and move on It s the final act in their journey to let go and let God take care of their lives After the last balloon has drifted out of site they clutch a tiny T shirt bearing the name each has given her aborted child along with a personal keepsake like a baby blanket a poem or a pair

  • One Woman's Experience
think about it My boyfriend was starting a new business and I was still in college with a prominent successful career in front of my eyes so this baby was going to be a problem Besides I was so scared about my parents reaction and of hurting their feelings that I just let things happen trying to convince myself that I was doing the right thing and that the baby was just a bunch of tissues inside my womb Needless to say that after the procedure was done I felt that all the emptiness of the universe was left inside of me There was nothing just emptiness And that same feeling was taking control of every part of my life A few hours after the abortion I started crying and I didn t stop for a long time For many years I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard a baby crying Now that I look back I feel sorry Whenever I look inside my little girls eyes I see that tiny little baby so small so alone I keep asking myself why did I do that When I first saw my daughter over my chest

  • Former Abortion Employees Seek Peace After Quitting
appeared on local TV explaining his conversion The following summer he was featured in the National Enquirer as being sought after by investigators working for former independent counsel Kenneth W Starr who had heard of Monica Lewinsky s 1996 abortion and Harrah s reputation as abortionist to the stars Harrah is a flamboyant outspoken individual says Ron Fitzsimmons of the National Coalition of Abortion Providers A number of people within our movement knew Eric had personal issues he was dealing with he says He was someone you couldn t ignore Meanwhile Harrah s reputation as a spaker for pro life causes skyrocketed Eric moved out of the abortion industry and the next day he was on the speaking circuit says Carol Everett who operated a Dallas abortion facility before leaving the business in 1983 But I never trusted him because he seemed to fabricate his story as he went Everybody sees someone who s a new pro lifer and wants to get that story out as fast as possible But we need time to change You just don t turn 180 degrees and step into another culture Appleton says it took her seven years to switch cultures I encountered many pro life picketers and sidewalk counselors she says of her five years at the Falls Church abortion facility For the most part I hated them all But one woman Debra Braun befriended her Appleton followed her friend to Minnesota in early 1991 and attended one of Dr Ney s therapy sessions in 1995 She calls it hell week We started at 8 in the morning and finished at 10 at night she says of Dr Ney s therapy I was there with a couple other former abortion providers and together we helped one another give humanity to the unborn babies we helped kill Some make it some don t the doctor says The ones who don t sort of implode They may revert to drinking trying to struggle with their anger and guilt hiding out in a series of rationalizations They have to deal with all sorts of problems guilt shame anger They feel they ve been badly used by their colleagues doing the dirty work for other doctors These people also feel they are doing a job for society that other people are making them do it They feel used When we attempted to find out what got people into the abortion industry they said it was the power and the money that attracted them The power was power over life and death Dr Ney who is near retirement has since expanded to a more international sphere I get quite a number of East Bloc ex abortionists he says As for the Russians they are gradually finding a voice and protesting what is happening to them telling the state they cannot be expected to do that Russian women average 2 and 1 2 to four abortions according to the World Health Organization American women who have left the business

  • Mona Charen on the Baby Hope Situation
baby girl weighed in at 1 pound The doctors decided that the child was very unlikely to survive and instructed that nothing be done Connie Boyles a nurse and Shelly Lowe a medical technician saw the baby girl gasp for air and were stunned Lowe knowing that the nurses were busy caring for other patients in the emergency room asked if she could hold the child she dubbed Baby Hope until she died The request was granted Lowe wrapped Baby Hope in a blanket and settled into a rocking chair for what she imagined would be just a few minutes She sang to her and stroked her cheeks I wanted her to feel that she was wanted Lowe explained later She was a perfectly formed newborn entering the world too soon through no choice of her own The baby sucked on her lower lip opened and closed her hands and moved a bit as Lowe held her She also did something else she continued to breathe on her own Dr John Willke a pro life activist and former obstetrician says he doesn t quarrel with the initial determination made by the emergency room physicians that Baby Hope was too small and too premature to survive But he says when she was still alive and breathing room air 30 minutes after birth her status should have been reassessed An excellent neonatal care unit was a mere helicopter ride away And she might have been saved As it is nothing was done After three hours Baby Hope died in the arms of the compassionate Shelly Lowe The state of Ohio issued her a death certificate The cause of death was listed as extreme prematurity secondary to induced abortion Would Dr Haskell have issued her a death certificate at his shop or does

  • Post-Abortion Speaker Featured at Catholic Churches
Three years later she had a second abortion again under pressure from a man she was having a relationship with I withdrew from him and more into myself refusing to deal with either abortion Wolters said I was totally numb I never smiled nor could I have fun I simply did not know how Wolters eventually married and had three children but said she was unable to hug her children or tell them she loved them For years I had a strong urge to cut myself while cooking and when I did I passed them off as accidents she said I had to fight with myself to control my car because I wanted to crash into the side of the freeway wall These were she said the classic symptoms of self abuse stemming from an abortion experience She said she repeatedly confessed her sin to a priest through the sacrament of penance but left feeling as empty as before I went in She joined a Protestant support group called Heart to Heart and learned that I was not crazy that others had experienced the same feelings and behaviors as I did Still she longed to connect with fellow Catholics who had similar experiences Eventually through Project Rachel she found the self forgiveness she was looking for Project Rachel was founded in 1984 by Vicki Thorn a Milwaukee woman who tells of studies saying Catholic women are just as likely to have abortions as non Catholics American bishops acutely aware of the problem embraced Project Rachel named after an Old Testament woman who wept inconsolably about the loss of her children Pope John Paul II gave it his blessing Thorn set up a national hot line 800 593 2273 and says she has trained as many as 10 000 priests and lay counselors with techniques to meet the needs of women and sometimes men suffering after abortions In an interview Thorn said those techniques include naming the child working through a memorial to the child and writing a letter to the baby The trauma often takes 10 years or more to surface Thorn said with some women coming to grips with it when they become grandmothers For others she said the trauma is triggered by infant baptisms a miscarriage a movie that discusses prenatal development or the realization that the unborn child they conceived would be a teen ager if not aborted At the Mass Wolters told of a 12 week confidential program offered through her archdiocese in Seattle and healing retreats that led to her psychological and spiritual restoration as well as new bonding with her three children In the Portland archdiocese Project Rachel has been quietly in existence since 1994 but is being promoted for the first time this year with an Oregon hot line 800 249 8074 a small army of counselors and an April 16 18 retreat Wolters story during the weekend Masses was part of the advertising She told the congregation to never judge a woman

  • Roe v. Wade 25th Anniversary
be joining with thousands of church congregations across the nation to pray this week for the end to the violence Roe v Wade sanctions What has been Roe v Wade s legacy over these last twenty five years What Roe v Wade actually did was cheapen life at every stage of development The continued victimization and exploitation of women by abortionists Millions of post abortive women have suffered physically emotionally and psychologically from an abortion industry that lied to them The brutal death of 30 million sons daughters and grandchildren whose lives were taken in the name of personal freedom and autonomy The good news over the last twenty five years is the growing strength of the national network of women s help centers that give women better options than death for their unborn children I applaud the post abortive women who volunteer at these centers for giving mothers the truth and practical assistance so that they can carry their babies to term I share a vision with others in the pro life movement of a culture without abortion where the value of motherhood and the respect for human life is restored and where the personhood of unborn children is

  • Court: Fired Pro-Life Nurses Should Have Case Heard
maintained that the nurses were dismissed in November 1996 for refusing to render patient care as directed to a woman who needed an evacuation procedure after her unborn child had died Deborah Larson and Christine Thornton say in court papers they never refused to perform the procedure and were singled out because they had filed letters with Albany Medical Center expressing their religious opposition to performing or assisting in abortions Larson and Thornton say they were asked by the nurse in charge Nancy Tellier how they would feel about assisting in the laminaria When they inquired whether they would be required to participate in elective abortions Tellier did not respond according to court papers Another nurse ultimately assisted in the procedure and Tellier filed insubordination charges against the two nurses A month later they were fired Michael McDermott who is representing Larson and Thornton said he was ecstatic with the ruling It represents the first time challenge to a 1971 statute granting employees the right to opt out of participating in abortions but no legal remedy if they are punished This sends a message that Albany Medical Center cannot treat its employees like garbage and fire them just because their

  • Fewer Teens Getting Abortions in Virginia
had 903 abortions Although those numbers are incomplete because some providers have not reported and the eventual decline may be somewhat smaller people on both sides of the abortion debate agree that the apparent double digit reduction in Virginia is remarkable It s quite phenomenal said Fiona Givens a spokeswoman for Virginia Society for Human Life It s a win win situation for the families because the girls are not aborting their babies in secret It is unclear whether the decline in abortions has led to a rise in births to teen age mothers in Virginia Statistics on teen births in 1997 are not yet available although numbers through 1996 show a dip In Virginia preliminary figures show that births to women of all ages fell 9 percent from 1996 to 1997 Teen age abortions across the country have declined 32 percent from 31 per 1 000 girls in 1983 to 21 per 1 000 in 1994 the latest year for which statistics are available according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute the research arm of Planned Parenthood Twenty nine states enforce laws that require a parent be notified or give consent In Virginia a teen ager also can seek permission from a judge Relatively few teen agers have used that option Final figures won t be released until late summer state health officials said It s not just Virginia girls who are affected by the law In 1996 30 of the 44 teen agers seeking abortions from Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge in Roanoke came from other states mostly North Carolina and West Virginia both of which have parental involvement laws Blue Ridge President David Nova said Since July he said not a single out of state teenager has come in Anne Kincaid a lobbyist for former governor George
