  • Commission Recommends Taxpayer Funding of Experiments on Stem Cells from Embryonic Babies
Mr Shapiro we shouldn t be surprised that the NBAC has so little regard for the tiniest of humans House Majority Leader Dick Armey in response to the commission s report issued a short but very welcome statement on September 14 This Commission couldn t be more wrong What they call medical research is in fact an abuse of precious human embryos If I have it my way this report will be DOA when it goes to Congress RNC Life will cooperate in every way with Mr Armey s efforts to prevent removal of the ban on federal funding of research using stem cells derived from embryonic babies most of whom are leftovers from in vitro fertilization efforts We urge Congressman Armey and pro life Republicans and Democrats in Congress to move quickly toward a total ban on human embryo experimentation across the board not only in taxpayer funded medical centers university research facilities and government installations but private institutions as well including those operated by the pharmaceutical industry The Coalition of Americans for Research Ethics issued a press release on September 14 calling on Congress to reject the NBAC report It said that the report would establish as government policy a chilling utilitarian calculation in place of the long established medical norm that rejects doing harm to some in order to possibly benefit others The report s ethical reasoning only becomes more confused when it concludes that destroying killing spare embryos is relatively unproblematic since such embryos will be destroyed killed anyway By that reasoning the government should also follow the recommendations of euthanasia enthusiast and convicted felon Jack Kevorkian who advocates experimentation on death row prisoners because they too are slated to die anyway Terminally ill cancer patients and unborn children slated for abortion would also become ideal

  • Stem Cell Research: Ethics Panel Formally Backs Federal Funding
said that if stem cells derived from human embryos do not fall under that umbrella legislation will be written and likely passed by the House He predicted This is going to create one of the deepest divisions on Capitol Hill Stem cell research proponent Sen Arlen Specter R PA agreed that the recommendation will likely prove controversial but said My sense is the Senate will be in favor of it Friend USA Today 7 14 Calling on Congress to maintain the ban on money for any sort of human research nearly 100 prominent ethicists scientists and pro life activists issued a statement calling the research unethical and scientifically unnecessary the Gannett News Service Detroit News reports There is some confusion over the simple language of this ban said pro life Sen Sam Brownback R KS However he added We believe this language is clear The avenue being pursued by the administration is illegal he said taking issue with NIH s contention that federal funds could go toward research on existing stem cells no matter their source Former Surgeon General C Everett Koop former FDA Commissioner Dr Frank Young and former National Right to Life Committee President Dr J C Willkie

  • Stem Cell Research Financed
Although stem cell research brings forth many potentially great advances in medical technology these potential benefits are shadowed by the price that must be paid to attain them Killing human life in the name of research is unfair and fundamentally wrong Although the government banned human embryo research Dr Harold Varmus director of the National Institutes of Health announced that stem cell research does not violate the governmentban because the cells do not have the capacity to develop into a human being Cimons Los Angeles Times 1 20 This view disregards the fact that although the cells that are being studied cannot develop into a human being they can only be found and harvested in a healthy and viable embryo which does have this potential It is a biological and Biblical fact that life begins at conception says Rev Robert Fleischmann National Director of WELS Lutherans for Life It is wrong to unjustly kill human life at any stage We encourage the medical research community to preface further experimentation with stem cells by first discovering a means of obtaining them without taking human life It is unfortunate that the Clinton administration is compelling U S taxpayers who believe in the

  • Alternative Sources for Stem Cells Are Available
concocted a legal theory that would nullify the ban if the human embryos are killed by somebody other than the federally funded researcher or perhaps even by the federally funded researcher while he has punched out for an hour University of Wisconsin researchers carrying out embryonic stem cell research are currently engaging in similar subterfuges and are also trying to conceal the fact that their research involves the killing of living human embryos According to Susan Armacost Legislative Director for Wisconsin Right to Life Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and here at UW try to shift the focus by saying that a stem cell is no longer an embryo but the fact is that these stems cells were removed from living embryos who were thereby killed The dishonesty on the part of these researchers is unconscionable Concern about ethical issues in medical research has been prominent at key points in the 20th century The most appalling evidence of a lack of respect for human persons is evidenced by the ghastly experiments performed by Nazi doctors during World War II And in the infamous Tuskegee experiments the U S Public Health Service conducted unethical research on poor rural African American men who had syphilis The men were left to die because the study was designed to gather data not to aid in their recovery These ghastly incidences resulted in federal legislation protecting human research subjects That legislation prohibits human subject research without the consent of the subjects and the research must have the goal of benefiting the subjects Armacost continued There are alternative sources for stem cells that do not require the killing of human embryos and it is these ethical alternatives that should be fostered Instead NIH and UW researchers have abandoned all semblance of ethical behavior and

IN and Chris Smith R NJ Currently federal law forbids the use of public money to pay for research that involves damaging or manipulating live human embryos Despite Pro Life Opposition Federal Stem Cell Tests To Proceed WASHINGTON February 1999 Federal scientists will continue planning research using human stem cells despite arguments by pro life members of Congress that the studies would violate a federal ban the secretary of health and human services says c Donna Shalala the HHS secretary said Tuesday that she believes the federal law permits the study of cultured human stem cells even though the cells were originally obtained from human embryos The law allows stem cell research Shalala told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees HHS spending We intend to move forward in a careful deliberative process Pro abortion Sen Arlen Specter R PA the subcommittee chairman and a supporter of stem cell research asked if new legislation were needed We don t believe a change in law is necessary Shalala said Shalala s statement contradicts contentions by some lawmakers A letter signed by 70 pro life House members and sent to Shalala last week argued that any government funded research using human stem cells would violate a federal ban because the cells originated from human embryos that would be destroyed A letter signed last week by seven senators made similar objections The congressional letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala was drafted by the House pro life caucus chaired by Reps Christopher Smith R NJ and James Barcia D MI Signatories included Tom DeLay R TX the majority whip and Richard Armey R TX the majority leader and Henry Hyde R IL Several pro life Democrats were also among the signers A 1996 law specifically forbids federal funding of research in which

  • Fetal Tissue Research Unabashedly Wrong
No payment for embryos and no dedication of embryonic cells for specific recipients OK so you won t get paid to have an abortion That s all well and good but I suspect that one of the biggest drawbacks of abortion is the guilt most women will inevitably feel after they have one If they knew that the fetus would be going somewhere useful anyway this guilt might lessen somewhat and some women could start to have no qualms about terminating a pregnancy I can see it now the new era of free love Hey everyone let s all just have completely irresponsible sex because if you get pregnant you can have an abortion and the fetus will go for tissue research and you ll be a hero Now for those of you who are thinking oh she doesn t understand she doesn t know anyone who has to deal with a disease that could be helped by this research I m gonna let you in on a little secret My own father has Parkinson s disease one of the primary illnesses scientists think could benefit from this research I love my father more than anything on this planet but as much as I wish there could be some miracle cure for his illness I still have to stick to my principles I think he would be proud of me for standing up for my beliefs he taught me to do just that We are not meant to live forever We are put on this earth for however short or long a time to live our lives to the fullest and to be grateful for every single day Yes diseases like Parkinson s and Alzheimer s cause suffering for the people who have them and for their families However everyone
