  • Libertarians Blast Government's Chilling "Deformed Baby Database"
to try to qualify for the federal money The state legislature is currently debating AB 238 which would require doctors and midwives to immediately report the name of any child born with what is termed an adverse birth outcome to government health officials Supporters of the bill claim such a database will allow researchers to better understand the causes of birth defects But the Libertarian Party opposes the plan said Dasbach because the federal government should not be in the baby registration business especially when it involves parents and infants who are struggling with tragic possibly life threatening medical conditions On the face of it this bill is appalling The whole notion that government bureaucrats will maintain a database of deformed children or children handicapped by genetic diseases is repugnant he said Even the language of the bill talking about poor reproductive outcomes sounds chillingly close to the kind of master race eugenics research done by totalitarian governments in the past But what s worse said Dasbach is the possibility of what the government may do with this information in the future Once the government has its database of genetically handicapped children how will it use that information he asked Can we trust federal bureaucrats not to use this data to try to control health care costs by pressuring women to have abortions against their will Might politicians mandate genetic testing of children in the womb asked Dasbach If they discover an incurable defect would mothers be encouraged to have an abortion And if parents don t comply might the government sue them to recover the staggering costs associated with many genetic diseases Or if some lifestyle decision by the parents was found to contribute to the likelihood of a birth defect might the government sue them to recover the

  • New UN Report Challenges Overpopulation Myth
into chronic famine disease poverty and civil strife According to the report however Over the period 1961 1998 world per capita food available for direct human consumption increased by 24 per cent and there is enough being produced for everyone on the planet to be adequately nourished Also general advances in technology and industry have resulted in a dramatic growth in average material well being From 1900 to 2000 world population grew from 1 6 billion persons to 6 1 billion However while world population increased close to 4 times world real gross domestic product increased 20 to 40 times allowing the world to not only sustain a four fold population increase but also to do so at vastly higher standards of living The report shows guarded optimism that these trends will continue and that food production will continue to grow along with the population Population control advocates also argue that growth will strip the world of nonrenewable resources like oil and minerals thereby throwing economies into disarray But the Population Division report says During recent decades new reserves have been discovered producing the seeming paradox that even though consumption of many minerals has risen so has the estimated amount of the resource as yet untapped The latest argument concerns the environmental effects of population growth including pollution habitat destruction and the extinction of species The report contends that population growth may contribute to some of these problems especially fisheries depletion and water contamination but In general population growth appears to be much less important as a driving force of such problems than is economic growth and technology Even global warming will be mainly due to modes of production not to the size growth and distribution of population Consumption patterns among developed countries with declining populations also have a detrimental

  • Battle Against Abortion/ Battle Against Slavery
succeed he would have to go about the matter in the right way First he educated himself thoroughly learning all about slavery and conditions on slave ships Then he began working with a small but influential group of friends who were equally committed to abolition known as the Clapham sect They supervised government inquiries into the horrors of the slave trade and exposed it Wilberforce and his allies then began educating the public about these horrors The first victory was a small one but it proved that the slave industry was vulnerable It was a vote in 1788 that restricted the number of slaves that a ship could be allowed to carry based on the ship s tonnage For the next nineteen years Wilberforce introduced bills banning the slave trade And year after year his opponents found ways to defeat them often playing dirty As Kevin Belmonte writes in his great new book Hero for Humanity Wilberforce faced a constant stream of false accusations and vitriol death threats and a challenge to a duel But after nearly two decades of hard work it became clear that the logjam was breaking The public would no longer tolerate commerce in human misery This change in attitude writes Belmonte grew directly from the sustained campaign to convince the public of the slave trade s immorality Finally in 1807 twenty years after Wilberforce began his battle the House of Commons voted by an overwhelming majority to abolish the slave trade What is the lesson of Wilberforce s life Despite repeated losses he kept working By God s grace his cause made incremental gains He didn t demand all or nothing but eventually carried the day He then continued his labors and eventually slavery was outlawed three days before he died in 1833 This is
