than I am cornered the market in existential meanderings and self indulgent though it is at least it s a flag something to rally round What have we got Beyonce and Harry Potter both created and sold to us by people our parent ages Not that I ve anything against Harry Potter I enjoyed The Half Blood Prince immensely But it isn t us It s not who we are Even the most conventional of magazines has recognized that something is up Vanity Fair has an essay competition in its current issue titled What s on the minds of America s youth today It asks young writers to explain for a prize of 1 500 and a Montblanc fountain pen just what is going on As Vanity Fair s editors see it More than 30 years ago young people across the country staged sit ins for civil rights got up and protested against a misguided undeclared war and actually gave a damn if a president lied to them Today it seems as if the younger generation of Americans are content to watch their MTV fiddle with their game players and follow the love lives of Brad Jen Jessica and Paris What has changed What is going on inside the minds of American youth today What s funny is that this hailing of American youth displays a paradoxical lack of awareness of our generation even as it tries to pin us down There s no such thing as American youth or British youth come to that these days That s exactly what we re not a body a set At the other end of the magazine spectrum is the international publication Adbusters Achingly hip painstakingly designed and printed on recycled paper Adbusters is the flagship magazine of the counter culture movement such as it is The Adbusters manifesto states the magazine s purpose boldly We re the ragtag remnants of oppositional culture what s left of the revolutionary impulse in the jaded fin de millennium atmosphere of post modernity in which revolution is said to no longer be possible What we share is an overwhelming rage against consumer capitalism and a vague sense that our time has come to act as a vague collective force So there you have it I bet you never thought defining a generation was so easy Seriously though this is about as close as anyone gets to saying what culture jammers are all about The idea of the collective is one that has always captured the imagination of young people remember all those 60s communes The most fertile ground for collectivism today is the Internet where identity is automatically annulled Anonymity allows collective projects to flourish with no individual gain only collective gain The collectivist writing project everything2 com is a site run by people you may never meet or talk to and that specializes in creating fiction or journalism One user identified only as loquacious puts the collectivist ideal this way The site is the

Culpa You broke my heart and broke my mind and broke my soul I am still trying to fix it But I forgive you I forgive you I forgive you I still remember you sitting in his kitchen sitting in a chair and asking me to cut your hair The patient brushing stroking cutting You made the mundane more interesting You never did manage to teach me to juggle I barely scratched the surface of teaching you to think in french If I didn t know so much about all your little bad habits I would have leapt at the innuendo you had strewn at my feet Lucky for me I didn t Luckier for you You are the crush that will endure the sands of time Your eyes are dark pools of kindness and when you look at me in that way I am taken back to the days when we were too afraid to do anything about it You kissed me on my wedding day Nothing unusual just a kiss It tasted like regret We are both committed to others but always there is that question And the answer Oh the answer And it all boils down to you Lucky seven You were my friend You were my acquaintance I had to have you Every fibre of my being breathed that wanting You were fun and laughter and light Your eyes were the cloudless sky after the storm I wanted you Oh I wanted you I got you I still look at you every once in a while in disbelief You are mine And it is good I like it 10 C s I would have leapt at the innuendo you had strewn at my feet In this place in this room in this moment What do you

not love It s not even close miraculous solution for heartbreaks Tell me about yourself Tell me everything It hurts just to watch it go by Every poem about thunder was written under the protection of a roof or at the very least an empty sky Singing in the mountains where nobody can hear you Dog the Bounty Hunter Lightning makes no sound and until the thunder comes you are alone with the light I would have liked thunder when she left Song of Ceber 6 Therdy A rose in candlelight her curves dance upon the wall To all the cold people who want to be warm again the lightning strike sounded like a car falling out of the sky January 21 2010 snow and lights the kingdom of now How can something be more beautiful than it is god lay dying To paint a thousand words What do you know of me or I of you A Solitary Silence I m glad the evil overlord was on my team Runner s high Log in or register to write something here or to contact authors Sign in Login Password remember me Lost password Sign up Need help accounthelp everything2 com

  • We all float down here - Everything2.com
waiting That s fine she says We start today officially She flips through the book What do you want to start with she asks Classical Baroque Baroque the mathematical precision of baroque music seems like a good way to get back into things She opens a minuet by Rameau There is obviously no one way to teach piano My first teacher usually played a new piece through for me once then had me start by sightreading the right hand followed by the left She started marking up the page if there was something she thought needed attention I don t have my first RCM grade 1 book anymore but Aleksandra had to make so many notes on Mozart s Minuet in F Major that she had to start using different coloured pens My new teacher works differently before having me play anything she points to different parts of the score and draws attention to certain things This second phrase is similar to the first phrase until the last bar Ignore these slur marks and play these four bars as one phrase those are just the original violin markings When they say to play the left hand quarter note s detached they do not mean staccato Here let me change the quarter notes in this first bar into eighth notes and eighth rests Only then does she say OK play the right hand That goes fine though she notes that my body should be looser and it would be better if I shifted the weight of my hand more evenly for a smoother sound She has me play the left hand on my own first and then while she plays the right hand That goes OK too I debate telling her that I played through this once or twice when I first bought my keyboard five years earlier I decide that it was long enough ago that I was now actually re learning it and keep my mouth shut She seems satisifed that I have enough to go on for the minuet for practicing at home and flips to another piece towards the middle of the book This is not one I learned as a kid and it s not one I tried to play through as an adult It s test time This time we start with the left hand which consist almost entirely of quarter notes followed by a jump to the appropriate chord in the next octave It s a bit like Satie she says He does this sometimes I dive in and play the low G followed by the G chord an octave higher No she says OK You entered the room she continues You have to exit it If I d ever actually learned about arching I d forgotten all about it I practice the first bar like that again and again until she s happy with the way my hand is travelling from one octave to the other The right hand is next and it
