continued writing for her own sake She also began baking larger quantities of brownies and chocolate chip cookies that he could share which he did Once her fragrant package got put onto a ship going somewhere else She received a note and an apology from an unknown soldier thanking her for the cookies brownies and cans of Copenhagen It was Christmas and they were much obliged In every place they have lived there is one photograph she hangs up that she took as the submarine left the port and all the memories come flooding back When he left the Navy it was mainly for reasons regarding his father s health bringing them and my oldest grandson back to New Jersey He had kept in touch with some of his Navy buddies and at some point my daughter told me the two of them wanted to talk with us about an important decision My first thought was divorce although I had no real reason to think this just the serious sound in her voice Turned out her husband had been approached by a recruiter to re enlist and attend the Warrior Transition Course from Navy to Army for the New Jersey National Guard By this time they had three young sons His brother is a Marine so her husband was aware of the friendly friction between different branches of the U S military The five month training would take place at Fort Bliss Texas He signed on with the provision he keep his E6 rank and be allowed to wear his dolphins He decided to learn something new and much needed water purification He was told they doubted his unit would ever go overseas The five months were hard on their boys even though he could call or skype I can t remember how long it was from his return from Texas but Jon Corzine was governor and to balance the state budget Corzine offered the New Jersey National Guard to the Federal government And the Federal government decided his water purification expertise was needed in Iraq which is how a submariner at heart ended up for one nerve wracking year in the dust tents no green My daughter is a strong young woman but that was one hard year for her for their sons for us and for her in laws whose other son was in Afghanistan Did he return the same Does it still bother him to hear of the ones who came home to divorce or the ones who have had accidental motorcycle deaths Does he keep all of his gear at the side of the bed Does he willingly go once a month for Drill As an extended family we pitch in when we can even if it s just listening to old submarine stories over a beer while watching hockey prompted by What war is like in six words and dedicated to all military families I like it 2 C s a dog waits in New

  • Say A Prayer (personal) by moeyz - Everything2.com
his staff handled the situation Son and I discreetly asked room mate and staff we ve come to know they all were shocked having been told a totally different scenerio Apparently the staff person who instigated this has done it numerous times before I actually witnessed her being rude and aggressive towards an elderly woman in the Common Room then the nurse had 2 cops come who tried to talk with elderly woman while the facility tried to contact daughter in Florida The woman is gone as in moved to another nursing home In desperation I asked my daughter to ask the Deaconry folks to pray and she said their new Pastor produced a long and all encompassing prayer not just for our situation but for the staff at CH etc I felt slight peacefulness In the midst of straightening our situation out the ceiling started to leak and the floors flooded in critical places The Dining Room The Common Room My thoughts at the time what else could possibly go wrong Next day was almost Biblical as I arrived to fire alarms and smoke in the wing where my husband s room is with Fire Doors closed I had no idea if he was okay I sat in the lobby as 1 cop and 8 firemen arrived me and 4 residents in varying stages of Dementia in the lobby no coffee no fruit infused water no comfort The poor guy at the desk a Veteran with PTSD and a Yankees fan was calling EVERYONE and kept saying I m just the receptionist I finally saw them wheel my husband out with no eyeglasses on plus O2 tank empty He was highly confused and agitated as the mere handful of staff members attempted to move everyone from the north wing into the permanent residents dining room with chandeliers and Frank Sinatra singing on a CD player stuck on The Way You Look Tonight My husband was beyond overwhelmed to say the least refusing to eat or drink He was worried about The Baby a soft bodied doll that he likes to hold and comfort side note Dr during his Fellowship was part of a study that showed men with Dementia responded better than women and needed less medication when given baby dolls to hold When we were finally able to go back to his room I asked for his food tray to try to get him to eat and drink He was somewhat better but having shortness of breath despite back on O2 In his words Can t look at you or eat and breathe at the same time A fairly coherent and complex statement The 36 Hour Day A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer s Disease Related Dementing Illnesses and Memory Loss in Later Life class populated considering He just wanted to be in his bed with Baby and Baby was not getting enough attention so I made a quick hat from one of his black

him time the first voice told the second After that the man who knew his name was not Jack found himself alone in the nothingness He was conscious of his own existence but there was nothing beyond that He could not remember who he was or how he came to be in the nothingness that now surrounded him Even his name eluded him but he knew his name was not Jack He focused on that the only thing close to a memory he had and meditated upon it My name is not Jack my name is not Jack A memory surfaced The voice of the woman was familiar the second piece of a puzzle somehow connected to his knowledge that his name was not Jack The name meant something It was not his name but it meant something The woman whose voice sounded familiar was connected to his knowledge of this He focused He had been in his apartment eating dinner and watching something on television There was a knock on the door He was expecting someone else but could not remember who that someone else was The woman whose voice he so recently heard had been at the door She had been a teacher of his back when he was in public school An English teacher She was worried about him That much he remember but he could not remember why she was so concerned This was a woman he had not seen in over twenty years and he was shocked to see her at his door He could remember nothing beyond that Jack Can you hear me It was her voice and not the voice of the man who asked the question this time He tried to respond but could not He had no sense of his physical being He could not move or respond in any way Her name was Miss McGovern She had been quite young when she taught English at his old school Many of the male students developed crushes on her and fantasized about her Very little fazed her even the adoring lustful eyes of the boys she taught which she used to manipulate them into engaging with the subject matter She was a teacher who could inspire and encourage her students who never showed weakness or emotion The man who knew his name was not Jack remembered this and remembered how he later considered her a model in his own endeavors What those endeavors were he could not recall just as he could not recall why she had shown up at his door so many years later I doubt very much he can hear you It was a new voice in the nothingness a third voice sounding like that of a kindly old man If we cannot bring him back they may take all the Jacks offline It has become too dangerous No They can t He was in too deep I tried to pull him out but I was too late He
