  • Expat Exchange - Burgas - Advice from Expats on ExpatExchange.com
and the rest of the money lines their own pockets I lived in Bulgaria for several years and it became apparent that I was just a soft touch even to what I perceived as the nicest Bulgarians As far as they were concerned I was wealthy which I am not and they were duty bound to separate me from what little money I had They cleaned me out I expect to have people jumping down my throat and defending Bulgarians some of these people will be Bulgarians pretending to be expatriates So I don t anticipate returning to this forum and having to defend my views which are also the views of many expats I met during my ten years in Bulgaria My advice is DON T buy from a Realtor Go to Bulgaria and do your own research Take your time look around at different localities when you find a village or town you like check out the ratio of gypsies to Bulgarians Approach the mayor of the town s you like They have their finger on the pulse of their towns and they are important It is far better to be on the right side of the mayor than to deal with Realtors Mayors can help you in many ways If the mayor doesn t speak good English hire an interpreter at a prearranged fee And I can t emphasis this enough LEARN RUDIMENTARY BULGARIAN BEFORE YOU GO Then they won t find it easy to negotiate around you in your presence Most of the expats who bought in Bulgaria and later regretted it and came back to the UK never learned the language Finally if you are young and single finding a Bulgarian partner is easy Despite all I have said above if you have a Bulgarian partner said partner will protect you and your money You will receive all around better treatment and of course you will learn Bulgarian quickly Just remember steer clear of Agents approach Mayors don t flash your money around Fall in love with a local Good luck you ll need it Edward How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad Not in the slightest and due to the nature of my work I have lived in several countries including several Asian countries Bulgaria was the most disappointing One would have thought that by now their memories of communism would have grown dim but that s not the case they still behave like desperate communists on the lookout for a soft touch How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad I have been a delighted expatriate in all other countries even the most primitive parts of Asia Even Sri Lanka where they are only now building their first motorway Even Africa was a marvelous experience Bulgaria No More About Dream vs Reality of Expat Life in Bulgaria Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Burgas Bulgaria

that you are reporting on Cingoli Describe how you dreamed expat life would be before you moved overseas Please provide as much detail as possible I dreamed of living in Italy for many years running my own B B I dreamed of sitting around a large table with many friends and neighbors eating wonderful Italian dishes I dreamed of exploring the countryside other towns even other countries nearby I dreamed of living a simple life of having my own garden where I grew my own vegetables I dreamed of learning to cook Italian dishes learning the Italian language and settling into a different way of life How has your expat experience met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad Almost everything I dreamed of came to fruition with one important exception I lived on the side of a mountain overlooking the Le Marche valley all the way to the Adriatic Sea I sat for hours at friends dinner tables talking endlessly I explored much of the Le Marche region and some to the south I sang in the local choir became part of the town of Cingoli wonderful people I loved loved loved living in Italy even when we had only one room with heat in the house and cooked off a small heating element before we renovated the house How has your expat experience NOT met the expectations you dreamed about before you moved abroad The only problem and it was a big one was our visas We needed work visas to open a B B and the consulate in the U S told us it would be no problem to convert our visas into work visas But when we had the renovation completed we were not allowed to convert the visa We were told to go back to the U S and start the visa process anew We were not willing to spend another year just doing that so we sold the property got a good price and now we are in Mexico just weeks from opening our B B Love it here too No one asked for my advice but if they did I would tell them to just let life in a foreign country take you where it should Let the little things such as visa problems or standing in line at government offices for hours roll off your back Complain to each other get it out of your system then let it go and realize what a wonderful experience you are having Do not expect the same way of life you had in the U S which is supposed to be the point no When in Rome certainly applies here Stay open to how life is in other countries You have to go to a laundromat Oh well Think of the interesting people you will meet there I know we did Cannot find peanut butter in your local store Try nutella Stay open More About Dream vs Reality of Expat Life in Italy

  • Expat Exchange - Cuenca - Advice from Expats on ExpatExchange.com
tends to be followed It can often appear like everyone for him her self which in circumspect is appropriate in a culture that is still centered on the self or the clan This is just where Ecuador is in the overall gestalt of nations This is especially seen in driving where it is a free for all and only a very small but growing percentage of people know what the laws are When I hit the road I have come to expect absolutely anything and have found the best method is to slow down hang back and let people do what they will There is little fear of penalty or enforcement as up until recently a few dollars would take care of anything and 50 got you a driver s license I had to laugh last week when I saw an elder gent in his old truck blowing his horn persistently demanding that a police cruiser get out of his way Lastly I am used to cultural diversity and although the culture may seem exotic at first it is not extremely diverse Cuenca prior to the recent arrival of international expats had not been much of a melting pot It was even difficult to access by roads until the 1970 s For many this is not an issue but having lived in and in the shadow of NYC for many years I miss it More About Dream vs Reality of Expat Life in Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Cuenca Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Cuenca Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Guayaquil Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Manta Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Quito Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Quito Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Quito Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in Salinas Ecuador Dream of Living vs Reality of Living in San Clemente Ecuador View all Reports Worldwide Write a Comment about this Expat Report Sign In to post a comment Comments about this Report guest Jun 18 2012 11 33 Your comments on how life in Ecuador has not met your expectations provides a very thoughtful analysis of traits commonly found throughout Latin America I live in Mexico and the comments you make generally here as well Some expats put a very negative spin on these issues but I found your take very fair On the flip side of the coin Mexicans typically consider Americans and Canadians lacking in spontaneity because we do tend to spend more time considering repercussions rather than just acting on our feelings Not always of course but in general guest Jun 18 2012 17 24 I lived in Cuenca recently and agree with most of what you wrote One
