determined to work for the nascent coffee retailer after visiting the company s Pike Place Market flagship he was swept away by the coffee the romance the sense of purpose At the time the company had only three stores in Seattle and the founders didn t think Schultz could add value their greatest ambition was to expand into Portland Oregon Schultz pushed them to think bigger and was eventually hired as the head of marketing in 1982 Since then the retailer s growth has been extraordinary Today the company has 21 000 stores in 64 countries and territories and following its IPO in 1992 Starbucks has grown from 250m to 8b And that growth has benefited more than shareholders Schultz believes companies need to drive performance through the lens of humanity so over the years Starbucks has taken a stand for its workers It was the first company in the world to offer a college education to every employee and it spends more than 300m annually on health insurance more than the company spends on coffee beans These investments in employees were not popular with institutional investors during the economic crisis when Schultz resumed CEO duties after a time as Chairman But he maintained that cutting them would fracture trust both within the company and with consumers who believed in the company s values Not everything is a financial decision Schultz said It is incumbent on business and business leaders to do more That goal has come to the forefront in the past few years as political inaction income inequality and racial injustice in the US have led to what Schultz called the fracturing of the American dream If we want a country where consumers can buy our products then we need to create an environment where that s possible Shultz said Businesspeople are responsible not only to shareholders employees and customers but to society at large To that end Starbucks has helped small businesses gain access to funds established veteran hiring initiatives and opened discussions on race within its stores Each of these programs has helped build the company s reputation of transparency and authenticity which resonates with customers Schultz noted that growth can hide many mistakes but for lasting success your company s core purpose must be compatible with how consumers view you He challenged the audience to ask themselves Is this decision going to make your customers and employees proud As ubiquitous as Starbucks seems Schultz said there s always room to grow adding that innovation is the price of admission The company currently holds 10 market share in the US and 1 5 globally and its next step is to be the Willy Wonka of Coffee The company is entering the super premium market with its Starbucks Reserve brand and accompanying Roastery Tasting Room the first of which opened in Seattle in December 2014 The status quo is a death march Shultz said He urged attendees to find the curiosity to see around the corner and
