  • Transportation Fall Protection for Trucks, Buses and Railcars
steel frame on wheels The fixed track frame can be moved around a facility as needed and placed over different vehicles In the case of rail cars systems are often much longer with total lengths of 400 to 600 In these configurations the fixed track is mounted on either an inverted U or an inverted L For a recent installation as shown here we installed nine 31 high columns spaced approximately 56 apart Each was secured by a 10 deep 4 diameter footer and carried a jib arm that extended out 12 Continuous dual track was mounted beneath the arms along the entire 450 length When completed fall protection was provided for up to six workers at a time Our Services Extend Beyond Installation To Inspections Certification and Training The following are examples of FallProof s experience in the transportation industry with additional information in the slideshow below Maintenance Facilities In maintenance facilities the greatest fall hazard usually exists when a worker needs access to the roof As an example for trains on routes electrified with overhead lines the pantograph or pan on the locomotive roof is held up with compressed air pressure The apparatus requires periodic preventative maintenance some of which can only be done on the locomotive roof For this situation if the worker can access the roof near the pan and does not need access to the rest of the roof an inexpensive single point anchor with a self retracting lifeline SRL might be the only fall arrest system needed Where access to the top of the entire locomotive in needed the optimal solution might be either a cable or track horizontal lifeline If an overhead crane prevents the use of a truss mounted lifeline a fold away system could be used Other Areas As with any building maintenance facilities often have rooftop HVAC communication and other equipment near the edge that can expose maintenance workers to a fall hazard Where feasible the best protection for these areas is usually guardrails When a guardrail cannot be used a fall arrest or restraint system can be designed that will provide the needed protection Similarly any skylights roof hatches or similar items should be outfitted with a barrier or cover to prevent anyone from accidentally falling through Inspections Certification and Training We offer annual inspections and certification of fall protection systems and personal protective equipment PPE along with any required maintenance repair or modification needed In addition we regularly conduct user training for new hires and refresher courses for veteran workers The following are example projects we have completed Many transportation facilities routinely perform maintenance on top of equipment trucks trains buses etc Pictured here FallProof installed a horizontal cable lifeline for a regional public transportation provider to protect workers when they are performing maintenance on top of their trains Manufacturers in the trucking and transportation industry often have a need for fall protection when assembling large trucks or heavy fleet equipment for their customers Pictured here FallProof installed

including sewer tanks maintenance stations around elevated valves pumps and pipes aeration tanks and basins digesters utility towers and poles settling ponds and tanks and the catwalks and ladders providing access to these maintenance areas In addition to the specific equipment to be used a plan should incorporate descent and rescue planning and user training Because the related issue of confined space entry uses similar equipment it should be incorporated unless a separate plan addresses it We provide the design engineering installation inspection maintenance and training services needed to turn your written plan into the physical system that protects your employees A Variety of Simple Yet Effective Employee Safety Solutions FallProof has completed installations of the following solutions for its clients in the water and utilities industries Guardrails For many areas in the plant guardrails and safety gates are the best solution We install permanent guardrail systems around the perimeter of pump house roofs settling ponds and tanks as well as along catwalks elevated walkways and maintenance stands Safety Gates Safety gates are installed at ladders steps and other access points to provide continuous protection These passive systems are preferred because they require no special worker training and equipment Fixed Track Lifelines Single Point Anchors Fixed track lifelines and single point anchors are installed atop water tanks and other structures requiring access for maintenance These fall arrest systems when combined with a full body harness and connecting device allow for access and movement as required and protect the worker from hitting the ground in the event of a slip or fall Where activities are being performed above sludge or other untreated waste a beam or swing arm system is generally used to prevent the worker from reaching the hazardous material below Ladder Cages Vertical and Self Retracting Lifelines Although OSHA allows ladder cages as a means of protection for fixed ladders current best practice is to equip these ladders with either vertical lifelines or self retracting lifelines SRLs mounted above the top of the ladder We believe this provides superior protection as it will stop a fall within a couple of feet whereas a ladder cage does not stop downward movement at all As an added benefit either an SRL or vertical lifeline is generally less expensive to acquire and install than a ladder cage The following are example projects we have completed Tanks within water and wastewater treatment plants require inspections and other routine maintenance The size of these tanks necessitates the need for fall protection for workers performing these tasks Pictured here is a horizontal cable lifeline for one such application installed by FallProof for a facility in Delaware Water and utility plants have many hatches and openings to access different areas of the plant Open hatches present a fall safety hazard and potential for injury or worse Netting is a solution for hatches that need to be left open or are accidentally left open These netting systems when installed properly can catch a person who might inadvertently
