  • The two types of intelligence
piece of knowledge This is the type of intelligence that is tested in game shows such as Jeopardy Scientists know that IQ scores can alter mostly due to crystallized intelligence The score your child achieves now will likely change after he or she receives more schooling In fact crystallized intelligence continues to develop throughout a person s entire life Fluid intelligence Fluid intelligence is a sort of in the moment cognitive ability that encompasses learning problem solving and pattern recognition skills Also called native mental ability fluid intelligence scientists have observed is far less susceptible to change than crystallized intelligence In fact throughout a human s life fluid intelligence goes through two major growth spurts and those periods of rapid change reflect physical alterations The first occurs when you re a baby developing into a child The second occurs in adolescence into young adulthood ending in your late 20s to early 30s The name fluid intelligence comes from the fact that thinking with this type of mental state requires openness Often problem solving which is part of fluid intelligence is non linear and makes you think outside the box While many scientists agree that fluid intelligence declines after the second growth period some have hypothesized that it can improve According to The New York Times working memory is tied to fluid intelligence and that memory can be exercised By completing memory based tasks or games you can work your fluid intelligence expanding its capabilities We see attention and working memory as the cardiovascular function of the brain Susanne Jaeggi who conducted a study on intelligence told the source If you train your attention and working memory you increase your basic cognitive skills that help you for many different complex tasks RELATED ARTICLES Great books for gifted kids Pesticides associated with

  • Money matters: Poverty and IQ
memory and learning while the latter takes care of motor control and memory Wealthy kids tend to get more stimulation Farah told Deseret News National They get read to more talked to more get to visit interesting places we know that promotes cognitive brain development The more words children learn before they turn 3 the greater their intelligence may be When kids are read to by their parents or visit museums where they hear all sorts of new vocabulary they have a better shot at ending up with a high IQ than if they did not experience such things Reversing the effect of poverty A study conducted by Harvard University researchers discovered that living in poverty has the same effect on mental ability as pulling an all nighter every single night Like lack of sleep constantly being in financial turmoil diminishes a person s ability to focus on doing the things they must accomplish to change their situation Fortunately kids growing up in a harsh environment can overcome the mental effects of poverty According to a study by Boston Children s Hospital kids have very resilient brains Researchers observed children living in orphanages testing their brain development Kids who were removed from institutional living and placed in a stable foster home experienced a cognitive rebound Compared to peers who never lived in an orphanage the children who eventually lived with foster parents showed no mental development differences The researchers noted that the sooner children were removed from impoverished or stressful living conditions the better When children are young their minds can adapt to their situation incredibly well RELATED ARTICLES Great books for gifted kids Pesticides associated with reduced cognitive development Improve brain function with the right foods More NEWS CATEGORIES IQ Test Information Kids IQ Test Information Personality Test Information

  • Pesticide exposure in the womb may decrease child intelligence
2 3 5 and 5 years of age Finally researchers conducted an IQ test on 7 year olds who hadn t been exposed to many pesticides during prenatal development as well as to those who had The results revealed that children whose mothers had been exposed to pesticides while pregnant had an IQ score deficit of 7 points compared to their peers According to NPR a difference of 7 points is equivalent to that 7 year old child thinking at the capacity of a 6 5 year old However postnatal exposure did not affect testing outcomes Researchers believe this indicates that the process of development in the womb is more delicate and interruption by chemical pesticides can inhibit intelligence later in life Reducing exposure You don t have to live near farms to be exposed to pesticides The produce you eat and gardening supplies you choose can introduce the chemicals into your diet If you are pregnant or about to become pregnant you can limit your pesticide exposure to protect your child s future IQ Wash produce Farmers spray pesticides over fruit and vegetables so the produce s skin is coated with it While grocery stores may mist their food you should still wash it before consumption Consider using an all natural fruit and vegetable wash to ensure your produce is clean Eat organic Organic food by definition does not contain chemical pesticides By eating produce with this label you ll ensure you won t be exposed to the harmful chemicals Avoid weed killers While you want your garden to be lovely you shouldn t destroy weeds using a chemical spray These products contain pesticides that can affect your unborn child if you inhale too much of it RELATED ARTICLES Great books for gifted kids Pesticides associated with reduced cognitive

  • The fluoride problem: Scientific community can't agree on its effects on IQ
of environmental health at Harvard said in a statement The effect of each toxicant may seem small but the combined damage on a population scale can be serious especially because the brain power of the next generation is crucial to all of us The study suggested that even small doses of the chemical can be toxic to children However the Harvard results differ from those of other research No found connection According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Otago Dunedin New Zealand fluoride exposure does not affect IQ These findings contradict the Harvard study and call into question the popular notion that the chemical can negatively impact intelligence Researchers analyzed the data of children living in the town of Dunedin between the years 1972 and 1973 During that time drinking water was purified with fluoride Researchers specifically looked at children who ingested the water when they were about 5 years old They then checked the IQ score of those same children when they were between the ages of 7 and 13 then again at age 38 Researchers concluded there was no connection between IQ and fluoride exposure The control group those not exposed to fluoride did not have a significantly different IQ than the children who were exposed The control group also accounted for possible altering factors such as socio economic status of parents breastfeeding and birth weight Conclusions Both studies assessed data from different parts of the world Perhaps the fluoride levels in China where Harvard researchers found an association with lower IQ were higher than those in New Zealand Or the Harvard study may not have accounted for additional factors such as the effect of other chemicals on IQ Either way the scientific community seems to be at odds RELATED ARTICLES Great books for

  • A reduction in air pollution could improve child IQ
womb In fact according to Headlines and Global News children born to women exposed to high PAH levels had an IQ three points lower than kids born to women with less exposure These findings inspired Dr Perera to research a hypothetical decrease in air pollution to see if reducing airborne PAH would increase IQ in developing fetuses Researchers analyzed data on over 63 000 children born in New York City to women on Medicaid as lower income families typically live in areas exposed to high amounts of pollution After calculating a 25 percent decrease in PAH and pollution researchers estimated that children exposed to PAH in the womb would have a higher IQ score than if they had been subject to the full amount of PAH currently in New York City air IQ and earnings Researchers then tied the IQ results to future earnings estimating that children with higher IQs earn more than those with lower IQs In fact the study suggested that if children are exposed to 25 percent less PAH than they currently are they could collectively earn between 43 million and 215 million more in their lifetimes than they would otherwise Our analysis suggests that a modest reduction in urban air pollution would provide substantial economic benefits and help children realize their full potential Perera said in a statement The study emphasized the importance of pollution reduction for reasons outside of health Not only would decreasing pollution prevent illnesses it could allow kids to be born with high IQs and in turn potentially earn more money As city air is still polluted pregnant women may decide to seek a cleaner environment to increase their children s chances of being born with a high IQ RELATED ARTICLES Great books for gifted kids Pesticides associated with reduced cognitive development
