  • Hearing loss could lead to the loss of IQ
researchers analyzed six years worth of cognition test results from older adults who also suffered from hearing loss They found that these individuals cognitive abilities had declined around 30 to 40 percent faster than those whose hearing remained intact Our results show that hearing loss should not be considered an inconsequential part of aging because it may come with some serious long term consequences to healthy brain functioning said Frank Lin the senior study investigator Based on their findings the researchers believe it is important for physicians to help their patients address any hearing declines they have experienced Not being able to hear could lead to more long term problems than they realize RELATED ARTICLES Why that social media IQ test is inaccurate Genetic IQ tests to begin in China Improving critical thinking skills More NEWS CATEGORIES IQ Test Information Kids IQ Test Information Personality Test Information Career Test Information Other Test Information Free IQ Test What s your IQ Find out with our fun PhD Certified interactive test Where will Your IQ Score Emerge on the Chart Below 80 90 below average 90 110 average intelligence 111 121 above average 122 130 highly intelligent 131 141 gifted 142 genius

  • Surgical menopause could lead to memory problems in women
been any changes to their cognitive abilities as this is not uncommon according to a new study Surgical menopause is caused by the removal of a woman s ovaries Researchers behind the study which will be presented at the upcoming American Academy of Neurology s 65th Annual Meeting found that this procedure can increase the risk of memory and thinking problems in patients To arrive at these findings researchers analyzed data on 1 837 women between the ages of 53 and 100 Approximately 33 percent of these individuals had undergone surgical menopause After reviewing the results of tests designed to assess the women s memory and thinking skills the researchers found that the earlier patients received surgery the more likely they were to experience cognitive decline Women who underwent surgical menopause at an early age developed problems with their long term memory However those who experienced natural menopause did not struggle with these issues While we found a link between surgical menopause and thinking and memory decline women on longer hormone replacement therapies had slower declines said Riley Bove of the Harvard Medical School as well as the study s author Since hormone replacement therapy is widely available our research raises questions as to whether these therapies have a protective effect against cognitive decline and whether women who experience early surgical menopause should be taking hormone replacement therapies afterward RELATED ARTICLES Why that social media IQ test is inaccurate Genetic IQ tests to begin in China Improving critical thinking skills More NEWS CATEGORIES IQ Test Information Kids IQ Test Information Personality Test Information Career Test Information Other Test Information Free IQ Test What s your IQ Find out with our fun PhD Certified interactive test Where will Your IQ Score Emerge on the Chart Below 80 90 below average 90

After working with bilingual and monolingual senior citizens between the ages of 60 and 68 the researchers found that switching from one task to another comes much easier for them than it does for single language speakers This study provides some of the first evidence of an association between a particular cognitively stimulating activity in this case speaking multiple languages on a daily basis and brain function said John L Woodard an aging expert from Wayne State University who played no role in the study While individuals may not see the value in learning multiple languages in their youth this study shows that switching between them can actually make their mind more flexible later in life RELATED ARTICLES Why that social media IQ test is inaccurate Genetic IQ tests to begin in China Improving critical thinking skills More NEWS CATEGORIES IQ Test Information Kids IQ Test Information Personality Test Information Career Test Information Other Test Information Free IQ Test What s your IQ Find out with our fun PhD Certified interactive test Where will Your IQ Score Emerge on the Chart Below 80 90 below average 90 110 average intelligence 111 121 above average 122 130 highly intelligent 131 141

  • Experiences in youth can influence IQ later in life
by classmates Both factors could influence children s mood which in turn can impact their school performance Ultimately this research shows that something as simple as exposure to TV early in life can have long lasting ramifications on people s development Memories of childhood hunger not as detrimental for some people No parent wants to see his or her child growing up hungry but unfortunately this is the case for too many families One might assume that individuals who do not have food to eat during childhood would have more IQ problems later in life than those who did not go without regular meals However based on research from Lisa Barnes a cognitive neuropsychologist at Rush University Medical Center and her colleagues this was not the case at least for African Americans over the age of 65 who participated in their study Over the course of their study the researchers worked with 6 100 individuals who were at least 65 years old according to Discovery News Using information from interviews and cognitive tests the researchers learned that African American participants who remembered going hungry were less likely to see their mental abilities decline with age This in turn shows that childhood adversity is more protective than detrimental I think the big picture take home message is that early experiences matter said Tené Lewis a psychosocial epidemiologist at Emory University s Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta as quoted by the news source But we re not quite sure how or why Using marijuana could lower IQ Growing up children are often told not to use drugs by their parents and teachers Based on available research these authority figures are right as frequent marijuana use during individuals teenage years can do enough damage to reduce their IQ over time CBS
