    2002 for another decade from 2003 to 2012 UN ESCAP has jointly organized with KADO a regional Asian workshop on Enhancement of ICT Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities in October 2008 which produced the Recommendation for Information and Communication Technology ICT Accessibility Guideline for Persons with Disabilities Senator Monthian Buntan of Thailand who played leadership role in developing the recommendations of the World Summit on the Information Society regarding ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities and during the preparation of the Convention will be participating as well as Ambassador Luis Gallegos G3ict Chair and former chair of the Preparatory Committee of the United Nations General Assembly for the Convention Susan Schorr head of ITU D Special Initiatives and Axel Leblois Executive Director of G3ict A very dynamic group of participants representing all stakeholders including persons with disabilities industry and governments is expected to make this event an important milestone for ICT accessibility in the Asia Pacific region To read about the 2008 KADO UN ESCAP meeting click here http www unescap org unis press 2008 sep g46 asp Brief Description With 139 countries having signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities CRPD and 51 having ratified it as of October 2008 legislative and regulatory activities related to the implementation of its digital accessibility agenda will be a priority among ITU member states Yet few references and guidelines are available for country regulators and legislators to implement such measures or foster national programs supporting the digital accessibility agenda of the CRPD In order to address this challenge the Global Initiative for Inclusive ICTs G3ict and the International Telecommunication Union ITU organized a joint global forum on April 21st 2007 on Digital Accessibility standards in relation to the CRPD At this occasion ITU D and G3ict launched a Toolkit

    Transportation On June 15 2009 the Georgia Alliance for Accessible Technologies GAAT convened a brainstorming meeting among leading private and public sector organizations from Atlanta and other parts of the State to discuss how technology may be applied to make travel and tourism more accessible for persons with disabilities Delta Air Lines the Governor s Council on Development Disabilities Intercontinental Hotels the Georgia Institute of Technology Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport busiest airport in the world IBM the Georgia Department of Economic Development and a number of participants shared leading edge ICT applications for travelers with disabilities Among case studies explored during the session were the rendition of visual experiences with sounds for blind visitors of the Georgia Aquarium advanced path finding and geo positioning services for persons with disabilities Delta s extensive training and certification of over 2 000 agents among its personnel worldwide to accommodate persons with disabilities and a preview of the features of Intercontinental Hotels leading edge accessible reservation web site to be released this summer The group will continue its investigation to identify and foster the development of ICT based travel and tourism services for persons with disabilities It is expected to publish its finding
