    be accomplished Consistency standardization and enforcement continue to require attention Even though accessibility sits well positioned to enter the mainstream a few final steps need to be taken A driver is needed a common tool of practice in order to jumpstart the discipline into its next golden age and drive further innovation We need to look at accessibility from a business perspective Accessible Media Inc AMI was recently the exclusive media partner for the HACK ccessibility event hosted by Ryerson University in Toronto I also had the opportunity to sit as a judge at the event evaluating business pitches made by teams of primarily students from local universities Like a scene out of Shark Tank teams had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas for ten minutes to the judges in an effort to mainstream accessibility Nine pitches in total took this new perspective on the local regulations of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act AODA Pitches ranged from ideas for new apps accessibility obstacle notifications wayfinding tools and post secondary accessibility accommodation strategies The winner was a group named ABIL a billion persons with disabilities worldwide They will be launching a disability speaker portal at the secondary school level that will represent persons with disabilities who are accomplished speakers who will be engaged to speak at schools on topics other than their own disabilities A positive portrayal showing that persons of all abilities can accomplish anything that they put their mind too Could it be that something so simple could be an example of how to monetize the practice to the benefit of rapid innovation It s in the differentiation Business comes to the realization that to be accessible to adopt universal design and to be cognizant of the needs of their entire audience is to the benefit

    for Accessibility The associate certification is the core foundation credential and is conceptual in nature rather than technical This credential is appropriate for anyone in a wide variety of accessibility fields including those who deal with accessibility on the web in software design in transportation systems in architecture web accessibility software design transportation systems architectural spaces consumer product design industrial design automotive design and other fields In other words the intent of this first credential is to create a common base of knowledge across accessibility domains to ensure that accessibility professionals can speak with a common vocabulary and be aware of the important over arching concepts of accessibility across domains In fact we want to encourage cross domain thinking and cross domain problem solving For those who oversee accessibility projects or initiatives program managers product managers project managers business analysts executives salespeople customer service representatives etc this first credential will likely be the only accessibility credential they need Overall this exam will cover the three following broad topics Disabilities Challenges and Assistive Technologies Accessibility and Universal Design Declarations Standards Laws and Management Strategies Clients may not be completely satisfied with utilizing only the three broad topics of examination as sufficiently being representative of the field of accessibility The IAAP has worked with industry and accessibility pioneers to build this base While the context of the knowledge required for certification may vary based upon experience it s necessary that a base be established in order to move forward If we are to flourish we must standardize our practices in order to achieve viability What s the outcome we are looking for The practice of accessibility has evolved so that standardization of the knowledge base is required The number of professionals within the practice is small and for those of us who

    disabilities and effective means of meeting those needs Panels included Communication Technologies for Independent Living Emergency Preparedness Living in the Community Safely Ensuring and Funding Access to Equipment Training and Broadband Being on the closing panel for the day my role was in part to summarize the conversations that had taken place prior One point became obvious through the course of the discussion the broad group that was defined within the umbrella term cognitive disabilities have likely had specific accessibility accommodations needs that have historically gone underserved While this includes everything from support services to broad social inclusion it also includes access to common services and as well as access to media leisure entertainment and information As such that was the focus of my discussion that day Everyone regardless of their abilities has the right to access any form of media in the context that they chose This begins with consistent tools knowledge training and regulations Outside the American context I have been privy to and led similar discussions here in Canada and there s much we can learn as neighbors Previously I have discussed how I lead a Video Description Working Group for the FCC that operates with a common mandate to its Canadian Described Video Working Group counterpart that I also lead At the Telecommunications Summit one of the themes pertaining to regulations focused on the importance of a common initiative focused on achieving common goals In the United States the ADA has been in existence for 25 years In Canada we have no similar piece of legislation however our provincial jurisdictions have for the most part begun to develop legislation on this theme In our role at Accessible Media Inc AMI we are a national broadcaster serving primarily the media needs of those who are blind and
