and out of the opposing team s base quickly I just ran that bastard home using only my feet and vast ocean of skill and guile and I like to think handsomeness as well To each his own I say though for me only the most manly solution to a problem will do regardless of said solution s questionable sanity Jet Journey This Spy Hunter marked my first chance to use the Covenant Banshee air superiority fighter and while I d fiddled with the Covenant Ghost a bit during a few early play sessions I have to say that this is by far my favorite vehicle All the old controls are there boost aerial acrobatics fuel rod cannon and rapid fire lasers All you have to do is climb into this death dealer and you can almost feel your kill death ratio grow Few weapons are capable of taking the Banshee down and the ability to soar over the battlefield limits the danger of a sky jacking Of course that didn t stop me from getting sky jacked see the video You d think that such an incident would humble me but as you can clearly see from the tone of this and other Spy Hunter columns it most certainly has not I ll tell you what came close to humbling me though the handheld Missile Pod I ll be damned if I didn t get blown out of the sky by one of these terrors just as I was reaching the peak of my potential killing power You can t say I wasn t warned however because there is an audible klaxon warning when an enemy player gets a missile lock on your Banshee You may choose to ignore it as I did at your peril More Multiplayer Modes

section of Spy Hunter somewhere in the middle of the column but in the case of this last event I d like to put them right here at the front where all can see what amazing and fantastic readers we have Honestly as much fun as this column has been over the past month and a half for us GameSpies it simply wouldn t be possible without our super supportive readers As both the primary reason that we participate in this event and the only thing that keeps it going I want to salute you all even those of you that may not get to play but still read the column Now I give you the awards from our Halo 3 beta Spy Hunter Most experienced and deft murderer S1ygh Celebrity PlanetHalo com guest star Fluffaluffer Least used feature Vehicles Most heavily abused feature Jumping Most resembling the T 800 Terminator Scooter Least understanding of the concept of range Patrick Underutilized item Force Field Best Gundam related gamertag Zaku99 Abso freaking lute best grenade chuck Gabe Such range Such accuracy Most pleasing to see back in the game SpikeDelight Best secret ringer Jetlikuo Most Shamefully Craven Sterling that s number four he didn t even show this time Please take a moment to mentally congratulate these fine and not so fine fellows on a job well done They have all demonstrated particular valor on the digital battlefield and should be remembered in the annals of heroism Thanks go to all for a good game Now Where was I Due to the fact that I was so entranced by the simple fact that I was playing the Halo 3 beta most of the matches have gelled into a blurry memory of one joy filled evening Still as I was reviewing the

our epic Halo 3 beta coverage Presuming that that darned Crackdown code issue resolves we re looking forward to playing some of the beta tonight in a special session followed by a return to business as usual with yet more Halo 3 next Wednesday May 23 7 p m Pacific as always He chose poorly Being the astute readers you are the type of people who know where every sniper rifle and laser sword on a map might be hidden I m sure you noticed that there s no discussion of score yet Well unlike certain other weeks this time we were utterly annihilated I think that s related to choice of game Halo s multiplayer is timeless because it s a very very pure event Sheer gaming chutzpah perfect reflexes and speed and a nice chunk of item memorization and tactical knowledge are what make a Halo 2 champion and Rocket Mode is what makes a happy group of editors after a solid hour and a half of getting thrashed by our readers SpyHunter participants I salute you you utterly destroyed us last week Of course I have to apologize since the horrific issues many of us experienced downloading the last hurrah of map packs for Halo 2 resulted in a late start Between the initial technical issues and the later issues of trying to purchase Xbox content on a 360 I can t say that I was particularly thrilled about integrating the new maps into my rotation And remade classics or not two bucks per map is sheer highway banditry Of course again if we re discussing downloading issues with Halo then I have to mention the stunning impact of the franchise s closing chapter Halo 3 After a morning of stonewalling the Bungie and Microsoft teams finally

evidence to the contrary I prefer to believe that our readers are superlative Rainbow Six Vegas players or filthy hackers either way As you can see from the video below niftily embedded in this very article through some form of technological voodoo that I don t fully understand we ran through a ton of matches about eight in all These matches were made up of a combination of the new modes offered by the recently released Red Pack Total Conquest games at the beginning of the video and Assassination in the middle and end of the video We also made an effort to stick to the new maps available through the Red Pack focusing mainly on Doscala Restaurant Roof and Marshalling Yards with a dash of Kill House thrown in because Sterling knows that I hate it I was surprised by the low turn out this time because so many Spy Hunter participants had demanded that we offer Rainbow Six Vegas I m tempted to think that it may have had something to do with the fact that we only played with the downloadable content because those that didn t shell out the Microsoft Points to grab the new maps and modes were out of luck if they wanted to play last Wednesday We had similar issues with the last Spy Hunter when we played Lost Planet to the point that we had to forget about using the new maps almost entirely I m very interested in hearing your feedback on this so I ll put the question directly do you guys feel that it is better to attempt to showcase new downloadable content or should we try to include everyone by playing only modes and maps available out of the box As we move forward with GameSpy s community plans it s important to know what our readers prefer and I want to be sure that we re maximizing your opportunities to participate in this event so please email me if you have an opinion on anything really I like getting email Shotgun Wedding Total Conquest the new mode that has two teams trying to capture fixed satellite emplacements in an effort to accumulate points was my favorite mode of the evening Assassination where one team plays Assault and tries to kill the other Defending team s bald white dude was my least favorite in terms of actually playing the game but it certainly had its good points Specifically Assassination was definitely the funniest mode because Sterling and Scooter had the chance to ham it up in front of the camera Assassination mode also tended to be the fastest in terms of how quickly the matches were won and more frequently for us Spies lost Even with the small crop of competitors we still got wasted Granted some of the time we were in uneven teams but if you pay close attention to the video you ll notice that it really didn t make much difference if the teams

course my plan worked brilliantly I can t take too much credit however because for most of the matches the teams were completely jumbled so that sometimes all of us Spies were on the same team but usually it was Spy versus Spy I m going to blame it on Sterling locking down the teams in the game options but I m sure he has some other theory about Xbox Live and Lost Planet harboring some kind of internal software demon that hates him because of his filthy love of Sony products which may or may not be more probable In general I d like to say that GameSpy came out on top and at least the video agrees with me but our teams were so hopelessly muddled that I couldn t in good conscience stake a bright green GameSpy flag in my copy of Lost Planet That said I don t think I d be off base in saying that in an extremely sappy way everyone that participated won just a little bit because of the fantastic time we had blowing each other into tiny morsels of human flesh We started our little engagement with a couple of rounds of Team Deathmatch just to get things started off proper like This mode was probably the most irksome for the Spy guys because of a few issues that bothered us about Lost Planet itself like the janky way the game handles players turning around and how that impacts your ability to accurately fire your weapon I d be running towards a guy firing my machine gun but if I tried to deviate from that course the machine gun would get tangled in my arms and either stop firing or fire in a completely different direction than intended In addition latency

to Swallow Last Wednesday at 7 p m PST or maybe a little after 7 p m because we were unfortunately a bit late in setting up the whole thing Sterling McGarvey Patrick Joynt Thierry Scooter Nguyen and myself Gabe Graziani logged into Xbox Live and logged out of our previously held dignity As Patrick was fond of saying before some of the matches You know we play a lot of games but don t really get to focus on any one all that much also we pretty much suck Well friends the proof is most definitely in the playing and the one thing that is clear from the sum of our wins is that we do in fact suck at Gears of War anyway Do you know who doesn t suck though Every reader we faced during last week s match Not only did these fine gentlemen demonstrate a disturbing amount of skill at eviscerating us on the digital battlefield but they were also both diplomatic and polite while doing so I know I was a bit shocked too manners On Xbox Live Strange but true my friends While we dauntless GameSpy editors put forth our very best effort we simply could not withstand the bloodlust of our faithful readers Out of the eight matches we fought through we didn t win a single one Individual rounds within those eight matches went largely to our readers and we were only able to scrabble together about four actual victories Pathetic really Yet while these results could be seen as evidence that we GameSpies are somehow confrontationally challenged I prefer to look at it from the perspective that GameSpy s readers are in fact superior gamers At least those are the quiet reassurances I whisper like a mantra when the night terrors drench me in the cold sweat of reality Horror Show As I mentioned in the last Spy Hunter column we were taking glorious HD video of each match which I later cobbled together into a selection of my favorite highlights from the blood bath Sadly although we captured every last giblet of gore streaking down the camera we simply couldn t offer you the entire video of the carnage because it would have been about two hours of us dying over and over again and the file size would have been something ridiculous like five gigabytes Also sadly as it turns out I m not the greatest video editor in the universe so despite my finest efforts the clips occur in reverse chronological order I ll get it right next time I promise Still if you pay close attention to the video you ll notice that there are a couple of times where GameSpy s vaunted teamwork degenerates into outright in fighting These are some of my favorite moments from the matches because they illustrate our basic primal nature bent only on laying blame on someone else The part where Scooter berates Patrick for his inability to provide covering

GabeSpy Sterling McGarvey GSI Sterling M Patrick Joynt GSIJoynt Scooter Nguyen GSIScooter On game day remember those are alternating Wednesdays beginning next week March 28 sign on and look for the editor that you ve befriended Once you ve got a bead on one of us shoot us a message and we ll invite you to the game on a first come first served basis Simple enough The first game we re going to try is Gears of War because all of us editors have a copy and Xbox Live makes it easy for us to set this whole thing up We re planning on switching up games every column though so be sure to check each column so that you know which game is coming up next I m hoping that we can eventually expand to PC PS3 and Wii competitions but for the time being we ll confine next week s bloodsport to Gears of War Sterling s ready to kick your ass and chew your bubblegum Your Rights or Lack Thereof There are a couple of things that I need to go over before we begin this throw down hoe down Firstly we reserve the right to kick you out of the game and or off of our friends lists at any time and for any reason this unfortunately is not up for discussion so mind your manners please Possible reasons for bootage include but are not limited to an inordinate amount of swearing or other forms of epithets relating to sexual orientation or mental disability if you can t make it through a match without dropping an f bomb or calling someone an r tard mute your mic unsportsmanlike conduct gloating or otherwise insulting other players especially team killing in games that allow that sort of thing and anything that might generally make you come off as a jackass Keep in mind these rules do not necessarily apply to the GameSpy staff and you may be subjected to ruthless mocking during the game itself or in the subsequent column documenting the matches though you have my word that we ll make our finest effort to refrain from such chicanery As a quick aside we will run a routine purge of our friends lists in order to keep the matches open to all As you may already be aware Microsoft enforces a strict 100 friend limit and so we need to make an effort to ensure that everyone gets a chance to gun us down in cold blood This purge is nothing personal and we invite you to reapply before the next match GameSpy reserves the right to commit your gamertag to video so if you want to maintain your relative anonymity I do not recommend participating in this event In the week that follows the match I ll write up our violent little encounters and give nods to those that deserve them Specifically that means that I ll do a rundown of highlights from the match

  • GameSpy: State of the Station: Post-E3 '08 Hangover - Page 1
far too late in the year to give many gamers incentive to come I think it was a great opportunity for Nintendo and Konami to reap the spoils but it s also around midterms for many college students who d otherwise attend Instead I think E3 should be open to the public E for All s pricing while not as cheap as the likes of Leipzig or Tokyo Game Show would be sufficient in respect to capacity the LACC isn t as big as the Leipziger Messe or Makuhari Messe respectively Why not allow for the media and exhibitors to use the upper floors for business or separate South Hall from West Hall For all of the complaints from both media this downsized E3 is a joke and gamers ranging from E3 is boring this year to journalists and publishers said they wanted to downsize deal with it I think that a unified show would be a better compromise If E3 s so expensive to pull off then why not charge the public to attend Is there fear of a lack of crowd control Measures could be taken for sure Me I thought it was a fine show The smaller size meant that although my nights were sleepless as usual I could see a lot of games and cover them properly Also even though I had some lofty ideas for Sony s presence the results weren t bad except for PSP This in my opinion was the publisher s last real chance to jab some epinephrine into the platform Resistance Retribution looks to be a great game so far and it s very early in production Everything else felt paltry Unless third parties step up or we see many innovative PSN games get portable versions this is the last year
