    Vita Won t Get Fooled Again was the theme song of journalists at E3 in regard to Sony s next generation portable the PlayStation Vita But after going hands on with the impressive handheld s marquee title Uncharted Golden Abyss it was difficult to sing anything except the device s praises Wow was the standard first reaction when seeing Nathan Drake on the PSV s huge 5 OLED screen for the first time The game is a visual stunner on par with its PlayStation 3 counterparts and combined with the portable s dual analog stick controls Golden Abyss simply looks and feels like the next great Nathan Drake adventure Runners Up LittleBigPlanet Vita Sound Shapes Super Stardust Delta WipEout 2048 3DS Game of Show Super Mario 3DS Developer Nintendo Publisher Nintendo Platforms 3DS If one thing in this world is constant it s that Mario is Mario We wish we could remark on how innovative fresh and different Super Mario 3DS will be but the truth is it s just a plain fun 3D Mario game You run you jump you stomp on Goombas you grab leaves that turn Mario in to a flying raccoon you jump down pipes and collect coins you teeter on the edge of precarious pits while carefully navigating platforming segments and you have a lot of fun doing it It s Mario it still works and it s still awesome Runners Up Kid Icarus Uprising Mario Kart Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D Downloadable Game of Show Journey Developer thatgamecompany TGC Publisher Sony Computer Entertainment Platforms PlayStation 3 Journey is one of those weird games kind of like Limbo or Shadow of the Colossus in the loosest way that beard strokers will declare high art and action seeking gamers will disregard as an odd gaming

    scale a more diverse move set grappling around Gotham achieves everything Bionic Commando aspired to but fell short of and an overall better flow from mission to mission Arkham City is shaping up to be something even more special than expected The Penguin the Riddler Two Face and the Joker might be turning Gotham into their own playground but everyone will benefit from that and oh yeah playable Catwoman Runners Up Assassin s Creed Revelations Gears of War 3 Hitman Absolution Tomb Raider Uncharted 3 Drake s Deception Fighting Game of Show Soulcalibur V Developer Project Soul Publisher Namco Bandai Platforms Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Soulcalibur is a regular favorite among GameSpy s editorial staff and this fifth iteration of Namco Bandai s weapon based 3D fighting franchise looks like everything we expect from a Soulcalibur game Our only question is one of support if the developers support Soulcalibur V long term i e the way they didn t support the last two installments it could once again rise to become a serious and well respected fighting game Which would be awesome since we adore this freakin series Runners Up BlazBlue Continuum Shift II Plus Street Fighter X Tekken MMO Game of Show Star Wars The Old Republic Developer BioWare Publisher Electronic Arts Platforms PC We ve seen and played Star Wars The Old Republic a bunch of times over the last few years yet somehow we re still enamored by it Maybe it s the impressive voice acting that drives the story forward better than its text only ilk or maybe it s the fact that it s Star Wars so hey screw you Whatever the case we still like it and we still want it soon so here s hoping we won t be writing the same paragraph

    Origins has just about everything you could want from a platformer including a wide variety of gameplay mechanics dozens of levels and quite possibly the best art direction of any game we ve seen this year It s the game s frenzied multiplayer action however that really sets the legless and armless wonder s latest adventure apart from its competitors If you re not hooting hollering and most likely swearing when you re playing this game with three of your friends you re probably dead inside Runners Up LittleBigPlanet Vita Sly Cooper Thieves in Time Super Mario 3DS Racing Game of Show Forza Motorsport 4 Developer Turn 10 Studios Publisher Microsoft Platforms Xbox 360 Even if you re not a gearhead it s practically impossible not to be impressed by the insane level of detail that goes into each of Forza Motorsport 4 s 500 plus cars These vehicles interiors and exteriors look exactly as you d expect from the humble Kia Cee d to the decidedly un humble Aston Martin Vantage a feat that s matched only by their uber authentic handling on the track Real life cars not enough to get your blood pumping Try hopping behind the wheel of one of the rides manufactured by the Halo universe s ASKLON Motor Works Taking a Warthog through the turns on Germany s famed Nurburgring Sign us up Runners Up Mario Kart Need for Speed The Run Twisted Metal WipEout 2048 Role Playing Game of Show The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Developer Bethesda Game Studios Publisher Bethesda Softworks Platforms PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Video games are a sequels business which can variously be annoying and exceptionally rewarding The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim unquestionably falls in the latter camp it s reductive to say that it makes The Elder

    system and Infinite s enigmatic antagonist the Songbird It was a tour de force of the game and proof positive of Irrational s growing prominence as one of the most gifted development studios ever At an E3 full of great shooters BioShock Infinite was the winner by a landslide Runners Up Battlefield 3 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Far Cry 3 Rage Resistance 3 Sports Game of Show FIFA Soccer 12 Developer EA Canada Publisher Electronic Arts Platforms PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Soccer may not be the most popular sport in the U S but it was definitely the best looking sport at E3 2011 Now don t get us wrong we re not among those call it football douches it s just that FIFA Soccer 12 was flat out fun Nifty touches like the new Impact Engine to more realistically model player collisions and forcefulness as well as the totally revamped defending mechanic should add enough twists to keep FIFA veterans guessing But let s be honest We re all in this for the roster updates and FIFA 12 has the players we want looking as good as they ve ever looked on top of a very solid tried and true game engine That s all you need for a great sports title Runners Up Madden NFL 12 NBA 2K12 SSX UFC Undisputed 3 Strategy Game of Show End of Nations Developer Petroglyph Publisher Trion Worlds Platforms PC We know we know You re probably a little skeptical of the best strategy game at the show being an MMO But make sure you don t judge too quickly the guys at Petroglyph know strategy The developers discussed games like Warhammer 40 000 Dawn of War II and World in Conflict as inspirational titles and from what they

    rousing match of Battlefield 3 multiplayer Right off the bat as the cracks of sniper rifles filled the air and bullets whizzed by our virtual ears we knew we were in for something special Things got even more insane once the battle went underground as the ear splitting cacophony of gunfire in a subway tunnel made our hearts pound and our palms sweat It may not be real war but it sure sounds like it Best Co op Game Gears of War 3 Developer Epic Games Publisher Microsoft Platforms Xbox 360 Some of us thought it would be tough for Epic Games to improve upon Gears of War 2 s addictive Horde mode but sure enough the North Carolina based developer proved us wrong in a big way While the new and improved Horde mode still lets up to five players take out wave after wave of enemies it s now more akin to a tower defense game than a straight up action shooter Earning in game currency for kills allows you to purchase and upgrade things like turrets and barbed wire barricades adding some welcome strategy to an already fun game mode Epic when you can get five strangers to hoot and holler like old friends you know you ve done something right Best Multiplayer Game Battlefield 3 Developer Digital Illusions CE DICE Publisher Electronic Arts Platforms PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 For many first person shooter fans DICE is synonymous with awesomely addictive multiplayer sorry Call of Duty fans and it delivers the goods once again with Battlefield 3 While we didn t see any new game types or drive in any vehicles at E3 the changes made to some of the franchise s signature classes gave us high hopes for Battlefield 3 s longevity The Assault and Medic classes have been merged The Support class actually does what its name suggests Sniping as the Recon class actually requires more skill and patience than ever Yes yes and an emphatic yes Sign us up Best Licensed Game Aliens Colonial Marines Developer Gearbox Software Publisher SEGA Platforms PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 We re making an Aliens game We re making an Aliens game Gearbox s Randy Pitchford seemed to have said this phrase at least a dozen times during the 20 minute E3 presentation of Aliens Colonial Marines so it s impossible to deny that the man s passionate about this project He s got good reason as it looks like this will be one of the best Aliens games to come down the pipe since those great ones from the mid 1990s Yes Gearbox you re making an Aliens game and we re already looking forward to playing it Best New Technology PlayStation Vita Developer Sony Computer Entertainment Publisher Sony Computer Entertainment The two big technological showpieces of E3 Sony s PlayStation Vita and Nintendo s Wii U were big surprises in what they brought to the table but the Vita has the edge here The PSP

    based strategy scepter shines brighter than the turn based strategy genre than Sid Meier s Civilization series The newest version is same as it ever was but you know way way better The designers made some clever changes to the gameplay for one thing unit stacks are out No more huge groups of death lumbering over the border toward your hapless A I foe This time one unit occupies one space including towns by the way which can t be defended until kingdom come anymore either which means you need to use real map topography and strategy to win battles The A I is improved the multiplayer is streamlined thanks to Valve Steamworks integration custom maps and scenarios are a snap and Napoleon is back And this time he has a horse But what really made this one stand out amongst all the PC only titles at E3 was Firaxis Games sheer commitment to making Civ even better than it s ever been despite the fact that they could have simply rested on their laurels and still sold a bundle of games Taking chances on new gameplay conceits new modes of play and revamped A I may be breaking what ain t fixed but we re betting it ll pay huge dividends down the road Runners Up Star Wars The Old Republic DS Game of Show Okamiden DS Okami s one of those titles that suffered from what we like to call the Beyond Good Evil effect It was an absolutely fantastic game but it sold like crap In fact it sold so poorly that it basically killed developer Clover Studio and that s just sad as Okami was essentially Zelda but better So all things considered it s both surprising and awesome that Okami publisher Capcom greenlit this DS sequel We suspect it ll find a more stable audience on Nintendo s handheld where people seem more inclined to embrace weird yet good stuff see Capcom s Ace Attorney series for further proof In any case Okamiden features cutified versions of its predecessor s environments and characters with celestial canine pup Chibiterasu who one assumes is related to Okami s lupine protagonist Amaterasu trekking across colorful dreamscapes with a precocious little girl in tow They work alongside each other to solve puzzles battle monsters and spawn drawn objects into the environment through the magic of the DS stylus It reeks of Zelda like adventure and with any luck it finds its feet this time around Runners Up Professor Layton and the Unwound Future Puzzle Quest 2 Super Scribblenauts PSP Game of Show God of War Ghost of Sparta PSP The highest compliment you can pay the portable version of any console series is that it reasonably approximates the original s gameplay and overall feel God of War Ghost of Sparta for surpasses even this lofty threshold It s an honest to goodness kick ass God of War title that you can play on the train on the way to

    Mortal Kombat a series reboot that focuses on characters and storylines from the first three games AKA back when people cared is any indication creator Ed Boon s learned from his betters more specifically Street Fighter IV and committed himself and his team to injecting some actual quality into the game Characters with non identical move sets Super meters A fighting engine that looks like it amounts to more than a life support system for end of round fatalities This could be the first MK that hardcore fighting game fans take deadly seriously Runners Up Marvel vs Capcom 3 MMO Game of Show DC Universe Online PC PS3 A lot of superhero games suck and most of the games that SOE publishes suck so DC Universe Online should logically be the perfect union of train wreck and smallpox right Oddly enough no So far it s looking like one hell of an MMO It actually looks like it might pull off the whole twitch action angle that very few games in this genre have succeeded at and the rich and colorful DC Comics multiverse serves as its backdrop which makes for a pretty bottomless supply of story possibilities Plus you know it s not another fantasy MMO We re definitely looking forward to this one we just hope they ditch some of the terrible voice acting that we heard at E3 Runners Up Star Wars The Old Republic Motion Control Game of Show Heavy Rain Move Edition PS3 We went into E3 very with a fairly skeptical outlook for the PlayStation Move controller After all the thing s just a cheap knockoff of the Wii mote right Well the big draw here is Sony s actually applying it to numerous games that are will appeal to the hardcore gamers out there Case in point Heavy Rain whose unwieldy tank controls frustrated their fair share of players and occasionally made the old Resident Evil games seem pleasant Quantic Dream s psychological thriller seems made for the Move the basic walking controls operate much more smoothly and most actions from opening a door to twisting a water faucet are easy and intuitive If you skipped Heavy Rain due to the controls this ought to convince you to give it another try Runners Up Dance Central Music Rhythm Game of Show Dance Central 360 Attention uncoordinated people Are you sick of people mocking your dance moves even when you re just trying to do the Chicken Dance at a wedding Thanks to Harmonix you can finally start sowing the seeds of your dancefloor revenge one hop step at a time Dance Central will teach you how to perform everything from the most basic steps all the way to advanced moves even going so far as to allow players with two right feet to slow it down so no one gets hurt Your friends can even jump in to act as backup dancers if they want although somebody might need to get served if

    racers in an effort to stop them completely while the racers simply need to get away This high horsepower update definitely feels more like Burnout than a Need for Speed game but you re not going to hear us complaining The game s lasting legacy might actually come in the form of its community features which encourage players to prove that their better than their friends both head to head and via a laundry list of stats EA may have had us with Criterion but they re going to keep us with features like these Runners Up Gran Turismo 5 MotorStorm Apocalypse Role Playing Game of Show Fable III PC 360 For all of the ribbing he gets from the press Peter Molyneux sure does know how to make a fun RPG Gamers have gotten so used to his hearing his grandiose promises and mocking him for not delivering on them that they ve forgotten one simple thing his games are almost always a lot fun despite their flaws It s probably too early to declare that the case for Fable III a game that aims to improve upon its successors in a number of ways Offering up a much more streamlined RPG experience gone are the endless menus we ve grown so accustomed to a new type of NPC interaction called Dynamic Touch and a two part story with different types of gameplay Fable III is going to be a lot of fun even if it doesn t change the course of human history or make you coffee Runners Up Deus Ex Human Revolution Fallout New Vegas Shooter Game of Show Crysis 2 PC 360 PS3 With all due respect to the technological magicians at developers like Infinity Ward id and Epic no other team has done more to further the shooter genre over the last decade than Crytek The German developer continues to push technological boundaries with Crysis 2 which eschews the lush tropical settings of the first game and the developer s previous effort the Far Cry franchise in favor of the world s most recognizable concrete jungle New York City While the environmental shift to the mean streets of the Big Apple was almost off putting at first it became quickly apparent that designers at Crytek know just as much about urban warfare as they do about combat in the rainforest The game s stunning visuals are made even more impressive by the addition of subtle 3D technology which makes the HUD pop slightly and the iron sights look that much more realistic Oh and did we mention it looked almost as good on Xbox 360 as it did on PC Now that s magic Runners Up Call of Duty Black Ops Halo Reach Killzone 3 Medal of Honor Sports Game of Show NBA Jam Wii For most people who frequented arcades in the early 90s NBA Jam was one of the most formidable quarter munchers around It was one of those rare gems that even
