tribute to band s late vocalist Ronnie James Dio who died from stomach cancer on May 16 However he s aware that performing the songs while other vocalists are behind the microphone re emphasizes the singer s absence I think it will be exciting and a bit sad at the same time Butler told Noisecreep He was a one off great person utterly irreplaceable He was a great guy to know a great friend to me and it was just fantastic working with him For the High Voltage Festival concert in London s Victoria Park Heaven Hell were joined by ex Black Sabbath vocalist Glenn Hughes ex Deep Purple and Masterplan vocalist Jorn Lande who released released a tribute to Dio which features songs by Rainbow Dio and Black Sabbath Before Dio became critically ill with stomach cancer Heaven Hell had booked shows in Europe with Metallica throughout August Six weeks before we were supposed to start rehearsals Ronnie got really really bad and we had to cancel the tour Butler said The medical treatment seemed to be working and we all thought he was getting better It was totally unexpected when his health failed After Dio died on May 16 the band s European promoter suggested Heaven Hell play the High Voltage festival show as a tribute to their fallen frontman He s going to donate all the money to Ronnie s cancer fund Stand Up and Shout Butler said So we said Yeah as long as all the money goes to Ronnie s charity we ll do it Butler performed on and off with Dio since the 1980 Black Sabbath comeback album Heaven and Hell the group s first recording after Ozzy Osbourne was fired from the band While Sabbath s career with Dio started and ended with a band the singer and his bandmates also experienced some major turbulence While 1980 s Heaven and Hell album was a big success tensions developed during the making of the follow up 1981 s Mob Rules and after the December 1982 release of the concert album Live Evil Dio left Black Sabbath and formed his own band Dio He returned to Black Sabbath a decade later to write and record the 1992 album Dehumanizer but at the end of a tour for the record Black Sabbath agreed to open for Ozzy Osbourne in Costa Mesa Calif during what they thought would be Osbourne s farewell tour and have Ozzy join Black Sabbath on stage Dio who strongly disapproved of the idea quit the band and returned to his solo career Then in 2006 Rhino Records asked Butler Dio and Iommi if there were any outtakes they could use for a compilation album Black Sabbath The Dio Years Since there was nothing in storage the members decided to get back together to write three new songs on the album The sessions went so well that the members decided to tour as Heaven Hell and play material from their three albums along with the new songs They released the live CD and DVD Live From Radio City in 2007 then toured with Judas Priest Motà rhead and Testament on the Metal Masters Tour Other tours followed before the members of Heaven Hell decided to return to the studio and record their third full album together The Devil You Know which came out in 2009 The album and the tour that followed were tremendously successful which in retrospect provided closure to the band which went out on one of Dio s legendary high notes It was almost as if fate had a hand in it Butler told Noisecreep He sniffed and paused to recompose himself then concluded Well he s at peace now anyway Filed Under Heaven Hell 22 Comments Geezer s MOG Playlist Posted by Joe on June 29 2010 Available now over at mog com is Geezer Butler s exclusive playlist of songs for mog com  These know this is just unthinkable I m glad you made your post a task describing something beyond words I have a huge hole inside me now just pain I am lost don t know what to say words seem so tiny compared to this emotion loss This great man talent I felt privileged to have known I never tired of seeing you guys play you know how much this band meant to me all of you guys mean to me Ronnie was a magical person so friendly Intimate w strangers he had a way of making people feel at ease like old friends He treated everyone w respect including me the 1st time I met him in 1988 until I said goodbye to him little did I know for good After Atlantic City show last year A True friend hero legend gone Richard Simon says May 18 2010 at 8 41 pm Thank you Geezer for your generosity in sharing your thoughts Though not fortunate enough to know Ronnie he was still a big part of my life and knowing his last days were spent surrounded by friends and loved ones helps to fill the void left in my soul Like millions of others the music you made together and the humble and classy public persona you and your bandmates have carried yourselves with has inspired me countless times Now your words inspire me again not only to share Ronnie s music and legacy with as many people as I can but to cherish each moment with my loved ones Ronnie was fortunate to have friends like yourself Georgette Kostopoulos says May 18 2010 at 8 48 pm I love you Geezer You are a good man and my God bless Ronnie Astrapà says May 18 2010 at 8 48 pm I am in tears thanks Geezer Dio is alive Ian Collins of Katy Texas says May 18 2010 at 9 17 pm Dear Geezer I have to say how moved I was while reading your statement all you guys of sabbath heaven and hell are al very very classy gents Ya lls music and achievements will forever live on reaching out to generations to come I can t tell you how much Ronnie will be missed by my imediate family It s been hard for me to cope with this loss but you know he was such a great influence when my 8 year old is just as torn up Memories of my son and I jamming our air guitars to hevean and hell are very dear to me Especially when my son can sing the lyrics I miss Ronnie so much he was my hero I am just another fan who has been devastated by the loss of a great friend I can only hope to see Ronnie when it s my time God bless Wendy for being so very strong and god bless you Geezer for taking time to keep us fans informed many thanks Ian Jane says May 18 2010 at 9 24 pm God Bless Ronnie Eternal Be His Memory Danny Strickland says May 18 2010 at 9 28 pm First of all Geezer thank you from the bottom my and our collective hearts for sharing those thoughts with us As someone who survived cancer but losing my father my uncle and my wife s grandmother and grandfather to that damnable disease I can to a certain extent understand the pain and loss you and the band and Ronnie s family must feel at this time My heart truly aches for you all Amazingly although growing up in the 60 s and 70 s and being introduced to rock by my parents through their Elvis albums they grew up with him in Mississippi and then branching out on my own when my tastes in rock went to heavier fare I have never owned a Black Sabbath album Sure I heard all the classic Sabbath staples on the radio in the 70 s but the radio scene in Mississippi in the 80 s was pretty much all New Wave and Punk all the time I never really heard the Dio years Sabbath Perhaps it was my strict household or my bible belt upbringing but my folks would even laugh at some the album covers from Kiss or Motley Crue because even they knew it was showbiz but Sabbath well you guys scared them perhaps me as well And so the 90 s progressed into the 00 s and kids came along and all of life s endless and sometimes petty and useless cares heaped on me and I found my love of music waning I had not bought an album in years perhaps a decade Then almost magically I heard an ad on the radio at work one day for the release of Heaven Hell s concert CD and DVD Intrigued I went to the website and then to YouTube to watch some clips I sat there transfixed with my mouth open the whole time I m getting goosebumps as I write this There before my eyes and ears was a Master Class lesson on guitar tone from Tony Vinnie s impression of the Hammer of Thor on drums you and those fingers which blur at times they are flying so fast on the strings of your bass and then that voice I mean I had heard many of Ronnie s songs from Rainbow and his solo work but it didn t touch me then it seemed a little too pompous But as I watch those YouTube clips and then rushing out to buy the DVD and then the oringinal Heaven Hell album and then Mob Rules and Dehuminizer and Live Evil the power and the glory of Ronnie s voice with even more gravitas in my opinion due to his age the dying embers of my love of music came roaring back to full blaze propelled by Ronnie s soaring vocals Even more amazing was you could really get a taste a feel for Ronnie s loving and generous character through that DVD The way he would get out to the crowd either between songs or during them and shake their hands and thank them his love and appreciation for them for us was palpable Ronnie s work in Rainbow and his solo career while I appreciate more now is still for me secondary to his work with Sabbath Although the dream of Black Sabbath was born with Ozzy it was realized with Ronnie He completed you guys but you Tony and Vinnie lifted him to his pinnacle as well As Ronnie would often say at his shows when the crowd particularly moved him MAGIC That is what Black Sabbath and Heaven Hell were and through the legacy of your recordings together will always be MAGIC I am nearly 47 years old now You Tony Vinnie and Ronnie single handedly renewed my love for music Thank you and may God bless you and your family the band and most of all Ronnie s family May He also mend our broken hearts for I know mine is torn asunder RIP Ronnie We so dearly miss you Tom Armstrong says May 18 2010 at 9 34 pm Geez It is with great respect that you have been awarded the position of the go to guy through all the mess of the past few days I have always felt as though you have a special connection with the fans That is very evident with the issuance of your heart wrenching statement My son had his first birthday on 5 16 Ever since that same day when I heard about Dio I have been on an emotional rollercoaster In addition to listening to the tribute tunes on knac com wiping my eyes on one sleeve my nose on the other and crying in my beer I was trying to remember which sleeve was which After reading your statement I finally feel level Thank you for seeing the importance in sharing your relevent thoughts feelings and story from this past weekend I hope you feel better too Please give wendy a hug Thank again Sincerely The Armstrong family Brian Mader says May 18 2010 at 10 06 pm Geezer I cant thank you enough for writing us and letting us in on those final days I am truly saddened by DIO S passing I have seen many many concerts in my day over 400 and I can say without a doubt that DIO had a presence on stage I will never forget from the first time I saw him on the Black and Blue tour in 1981 to just recently in Lowell mass and all the times in between Never mind the 50 million times I have listened to heaven and hell from start to finish Maybe when the pain passes you guys could do a tribute tour with multiple special guest singers never just one because he could never be replaced EVER I will be front and center you can count on that RIP RJD Brio Chris Alvarado says May 18 2010 at 11 39 pm Geez Great Great comment about Ronnie Thank you for sharing that with the world My friends and I have had these discussions about who the BEST metal vocalist is Always it was agreed that Ronnie is was the best He was the only one we felt that sang his songs so that the listener could make out the words In fact I remember an interview some years ago where Ronnie said that it was important to him that either he pronounced the words to the songs clearly or that a lyric sheet was included with the album I always respected him for that But also he had stage presence something that very few possess I was fortunate to have seen him with Black Sabbath DIO and with Heaven and Hell He will surly be missed but his music will live on RIP RJD Ps Ko says May 19 2010 at 12 50 am Geezer thank you I think I just fell in love with you not the kind your wife needs to be jealous of the same kind I had for Ronnie You seem to have a soul a depth like Ronnie but I never noticed as you stayed more on the sidelines Even when I met you guys in Tx it was Ronnie I had made the cross country quest to see and him that I paid the most attention to I also made the quest to the brittney fundraiser this past Nov and spent a bit of time with him Wendy who were exactly how you describe at the time I was called stupid immature ect for spending all my to do so at the time I thought maybe I was but still didn t care it was the right thing Now I know it was My heart goes out to Wendy not so long ago i lost my true soulmate and although no ones pain is the same I feel empathy with her I hope that all who were close with them both will stay with her and be there when she needs them and know to give her time alone when she needs that Also thanks to H H for making it happen I was lucky enough to see you guys 3 times as H H and everytime the thing that stuck with me was how much you guys were enjoying it The looks you d give each other while playing the exchanged grins it was so obvious that it was right I m so glad that was able to happen I wish for long for more but it s not to be For now though the hero saved this world and was needed elsewhere there are worlds other then this one and those worlds have dragons too One day our world may need another dragon slayed and the hero will return again He was metal Metal never dies Brian Scalise says May 19 2010 at 1 22 am I never got to see him but I have all the live dvd s and cd s I have loved his music since I was a snot nosed kid back in 1983 He was always so very nice to his fans and it showed He was the little man with a huge voice and we all listened It really is sad to see him go and it really sucks because there will be no more man or music We all cherish the music so I do hope that Sabbath continues and does play those songs that Ronnie gave his all to That will keep him and his memory alive I used to be a male nurse assistant for 9 years taking care of the elderly so I know what the process of dying is about and it scared me every time I myself am afraid to die I hope it was peaceful and I hope someone did what I used to do for patients I took care of which is to open a window and let the gentle breeze touch their skin and the soul to be free I am so very glad that you did give us some of the information as to how it all went down because it does help us fans have some closure and maybe it will be therapeutic for you as well Geezer You know Ronnie always said to the fans We Rock to start out that song but the reality of it all is that Ronnie Rocked He rocked hard and he rocked with sincerity and dignity and respect and that is a rareity in the general population in this day in age God bless you Geezer and may Ronnie reach The Gates Of Babylon Gods Speed Ronnie we all love you Evan Ezra says May 19 2010 at 1 26 am I have been a Sabbath H H fan for over 35 years I have had the pleasure of seeing Sabbath in the early 70 s and with RJD in 1980 I still have the ticket stub and programme I had to wait until 2007 to have the privilege to see Heaven and Hell for what will be the final time I took my son along to what was an amazing night One I will cherish forever Thank you Geezer Tony and Vinnie Peace and Love to you all I even now have the winged man tattooed on my arm in a tribute RJD a true rock legend
