  • HS WINNERS OF HEROES REMEMBERED ANNOUNCED – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
    Veterans oral history high school education initiative High School students were challenged to submit a 3 5 minute film capturing the story of American Korean War Veterans The contest was held in conjunction with the Department of Defense DoD 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee We are pleased that high schools around the country and world California Virginia Oregon Guam Korea now have a better appreciation of what the Veterans of the Korean War endured over 60 years ago said COL David J Clark Director DoD 60 th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee The stories the students were able to capture are a priceless contribution to preserving our American history The top five films select films will be showcased as official selections during the 7 th Annual GI Film Festival on Friday 10 May In addition to screening at the festival each of the five finalists will receive a 500 cash scholarship from the GI Film Festival We are honored to be able to award these students for their creative work honoring our men and women in uniform said Laura Law Millett the director of the GI Film Festival The quality of their films and how they were able to capture the mission of the festival in only 3 5 minutes was extremely impressive The top five film winners are Meagan Arnold from Stephens City Virginia Kyle Plummer from Cambria California Dakotah Thrall from Milwaukie Oregon Aaron Long from Findlay Ohio and Jan Domingo from Santa Rita Guam They will be awarded their prizes following their films debut Honorable mentions were also awarded to Alex Lowry from McLean VA Jarrod Meyer from Aberdeen Ohio Lisa Kobzina fron Naples Florida Bobby Kim from Seoul Korea and Hannah Morris from Seoul Korea The mission of Heroes Remembered Voices

    Films Showing at 1 30PM Choc late Soldiers from the USA Showing at 1 30PM Choc late Soldiers from the USA GI Film Festival 2013 Films Doc Filmmaker GIFF 2013 WW2 May 10 2013 Choc late Soldiers from the USA directed by Noel Izon tells the story of thousands of African American soldiers who were sent to Britain during WWII These soldiers members of segregated Army units were engaged in preparations for the Normandy invasion Bonds formed between the American soldiers and British civilians as the soldiers introduced the Brits to jazz jitterbugging and African American culture The documentary includes these veterans recounting their first hand experiences Noel who has made other films about WWII said I wanted to discover if there were any stories which still remained untold The inspiration for Choc late Soldiers came when a friend suggested documenting the little known story about black American soldiers who were stationed in Britain during the war Asked what he wants audiences to take away from his film Noel replied to be grateful to these veterans for all their sacrifices and hard work despite all the obstacles in their way While making the film Noel observed that for these soldiers
