  • REEL REVIEWS: Captain Phillips Brings High Intensity Action – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
11 2013 THE WHO Tom Hanks Barkhad Abdi Michael Chernus and Catherine Keenner divider THE WHAT Based on a true story Hanks plays Captain Richard Phillips whose ship is hijacked by Somali pirates for the first times in 200 years and he must rely on the US Navy to be rescued divider THE BIG DEAL Captain Phillips mixes the perfect amount of drama with high intense action to keep the crowd guessing and on their feet for the full two hours With the help of acclaimed action director Paul Greengrass The Bourne Trilogy we witness a firsthand account of the courageous Captain Phillips and the ability of the US Navy to save his life The film revolves around Captain Phillips Tom Hanks as he finds a way to keep his crew alive when four Somali pirates capture their ship His hardship does not truly begin until he is held hostage and taken into a lifeboat with the pirates It is during this time that Hanks gives his best performance in the film as he keeps his calm and transforms from a working class individual into a hero and a valiant leader The most underrated part of the movie was the work of the Somali pirates played by mostly amateur actors Newcomer Barkhad Abdi who played the Somali leader Muse gave a standout performance Adding another layer to the film Greengrass chose to show the back story of these men which reveal that the hijackers actions were led mostly by their need for survival The director told their stories in such a compelling way that it leaves you feeling remorse for their circumstances With sharp lighting dramatic music and complex camera angles the last 45 minutes of the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat and the final clip

  • Five Great Women in GI Film History – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
G I Jane sets out on a Joan of Arc like crusade to be the first woman to undergo training in the U S Navy Special Warfare Group Some of the lines may be corny but this action packed film has an intriguing take on gender dynamics within the military Not to mention not much is more mesmerizing than watching G I Jane pull a burly Command Master Chief out of an explosives laden kill zone 2 Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley Alien is a terrifying story of what happens when humans mess with aggressive extraterrestrials Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley was the first female lead of a sci fi action movie in history Fighting against sexism and aliens Officer Ellen Ripley takes down a whole lot of evil forces in the process of saving the human race Alien is also one of the few sci fi action movies that doesn t include a male female romance Officer Ellen Ripley is motivated by survival instincts not a dude 3 Captain Doreen Lewis Comedic genius Goldie Hawn stars as the glamorous Judy Benjamin a pampered widow who gets tricked into joining the army Although Captain Doreen Lewis is not the protagonist of Private Benjamin she is the driving force behind Private Benjamin s transformation from a spoiled socialite to an accountable independent woman It should also be noted that Eileen Brennan received an Oscar nomination for her performance as the kick ass and inspiring Captain Doreen Lewis 4 Captain Karen Walden A Lt Colonel is put in charge of reviewing the posthumous candidacy of the first woman to receive a Medal of Honor Captain Karen Walden in Courage Under Fire There are plenty of tricky conflicts in this movie and almost all are the direct result of sexism or corrupt soldiers and government

  • An Awesome First Day as a P.A. – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
on set and can t wait to shoot my next commercial The commercial will help launch the Heroes Remembered Voices of Korean War Veterans Oral History Project The project is a joint venture between the GI Film Festival and KW60 The purpose of the project is to encourage students attending high school to learn more about the Forgotten War while helping to preserve the stories of Korean War Veterans The commercial is one more way we re reaching out to students to get them involved in this important project We spent all day shooting scenes of teens hanging out working with their teachers and testing their skills as amateur filmmakers We shot all day at three different locations I have to admit I m pretty impressed that we did all of this with one PA one producer and one director From what my friends in the industry have told me over the years coming in on budget and on time with a skeleton crew is unheard of I d like to believe that it speaks to the high caliber of professionalism of everyone involved By the time we finished we had a strong set of imagery the actors were still having fun and we were all ready for dinner and a good night s sleep Lessons learned Adaptability is key I know that anyone that has been involved in any kind of shoot commercial feature documentary etc knows this lesson and hopefully you re nodding your head empathetically Wardrobe malfunctions rainy skies and AWOL actors can make or break your shoot if can t adapt and overcome A life lesson succinctly put by our friends the Brits Keep Calm and Carry On I think that these challenges can set free creativity and encourage ingenuity I need to learn a lot
