  • The Man on Screen and the Voice Behind the Microphone: Summer at Ease – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
over again and still laugh out loud or cry silently From Hook 1991 Mrs Doubtfire 1993 Jumanji 1995 to Flubber 1997 these were the movies of my childhood As a small gesture to remember his huge legacy I watched Good Morning Vietnam 1987 Robin Williams has an astonishing way of instantly transporting me to my earlier years when watching him on screen would cause me to burst out laughing I was completely mesmerized by his performance and remain if only for the duration of the film completely content and without any concerns I know now what I didn t know then that my grade school teacher responsible for the charismatic daily morning announcements was inspired by Williams famous line that shares the film s title Gooooood Morning Vietnam Barry Levinson directed the war comedy film The Natural 1984 Bugsy 1991 Quiz Show 1994 Wag the Dog 1997 and Rain Man 1988 Inspired by former United States Air Force sergeant and radio personality Adrian Cronauer portrayed by Williams the film takes place in Saigon in 1965 where Airman Second Class Cronauer arrives on the scene to work as a DJ for the Armed Forces Radio Service He immediately receives endless laughs and support from servicemen who appreciate his light hearted reporting and music programming It s a fact that Vietnam War films always get the best music However the unapproved commentary and raucous rock n roll music place Cronauer in hot water when confronted by the austere Second Lieutenant Steven Hauk Bruno Kirby and Sergeant Major Phillip Dickerson J T Walsh who demand that Cronauer adhere to their stringent on air guidelines The characters in this film are so loveable Edward Eddie Garlick played by a young tall Forest Whitaker is an all around nice guy who s a bit insecure

  • Apocalypse Now and Then: ‘The Horror’ 35 Years Later – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
screenwriter John Milius is known for by audiences and colleagues is that he creates unforgettable stories and lines of dialogue like I love the smell of napalm in the morning I attribute part of the film s success to the way in which Milius and Coppola collaborated collaboration a dirty word in the film industry and interpreted Conrad s novel The film is not a direct adaptation of Conrad s novella so if you read the book you won t be disappointed by the movie rather Milius and Coppola took concepts ideas themes and characters and placed them in a new environment set in a Vietnam War era Milius says the movie is a sort of allegory It would have been too simple to have followed the book completely Meanwhile Coppola describes Milius script as a comedy and a terrifying psychological horror story Milius actually received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay the film took home the Academy Award for Best Cinematography Vittorio Storaro and Best Sound Walter Murch Richard Beggs Mark Berger Nathan Boxer Not only do the sound and image work beautifully but also imagine having to sift through over 200 hours of raw footage and working on sound mixing for 9 months definitely well deserved awards Watching every scene in Apocalypse Now is like eating your favorite meal it is a familiar experience yet every time you have it it still blows your mind It can t get any better but it does You are so attuned to the qualities of that dish that you can individually pick up on every flavor present and every texture means something different Similarly just as varied and individualistic as everyone s favorite dish eating experience may be those who watch this film will interpret it differently hold on to different images resonate with different lines of dialogue encounter a ha moments at different times and so on No two viewing experiences are the same and that rings especially true for this film Coppola forces audiences to go through an unprecedented experience of war and have them react as much as those who had gone through war You may love or hate Apocalypse Now but it will make you think In fact the extension of the movie watching experience is only encountered when you decide to think about the film mull over its intentions with its chosen color scheme probe at the protagonist s superobjective force yourself to think about the camera s movements and the significance of repetition Do these things think about a film after you ve seen it and you will gain a better understanding of its objectives and develop intrapersonal skills as you interpret cinema Coppola s opening sequence as with every carefully crafted and purposefully arranged scene in the film works to create layer after layer of significance and meaning and introduce subtle themes I could write on and on about the film s opening scene and dissect the superimposed images of Captain Willard
