  • Attenborough: Actor, Director, Producer, Oscar Winner – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
Ghandi 1982 and Chaplin 1992 Gordon Jackson MacDonald Intelligence left and Richard Attenborough Roger Big X right in a scene from The Great Escape Not having seen any of Attenborough s earlier performances I set out to watch a true classic The Great Escape 1963 a film that features Steve McQueen James Garner and Charles Bronson an epic soundtrack composed and conducted by Elmer Bernstein you can t help but whistle to the tune in the film s opening scenes and a tale of American courage and heroism in the face of hostility from a foreign enemy Oh and it s also adapted from the book which shares the same name as the film by one of the soldiers who was imprisoned in the Stalag Luft III POW Camp in Germany Paul Brickhill Having celebrated its 51 st anniversary in July The Great Escape follows the attempts of Allied prisoners of war to escape a high security German POW camp Attenborough plays Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett Big X who once on the scene begins creating serious plans for escape from the camp Steve McQueen stars in the film and is given a lot of credit for his performance as Virgil Hilts Cooler King especially because his name was and continues to be synonymous with all things cool but also since he performed most of his own motorcycle stunts featured in the film Despite all of this I believe Attenborough really steals the show You see Hilts is sincere but he s got his baseball glove and ball and his motorcycles Roger on the other hand has no distractions he doesn t fumble with his uniform and he doesn t fiddle with the space around him While McQueen s performance is a bit forced and over the top with constantly tossing

  • 30 Explosive Years Since Red Dawn: Summer at Ease – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
debatable Russian and Spanish translations however Red Dawn is successful in using a simple plot and playing on the trope of adult fear and American invasion by a foreign power to make the audience doubt themselves if even for a moment and consider the idea of being under occupation by the other Dirty No Dancing Before her debut as Frances Baby Houseman Jennifer Grey acted with Swayze in Red Dawn first Apparently they didn t hit it off during this film but during dancing tests for Dirty Dancing 1987 the chemistry was there I believe the decision to make the film as excessive as it is in the beginning not even allowing the viewer to attach to a protagonist or know his her name until much later places you in the position of one of the citizens of Calumet Colorado you are scatter brained there is no time to think you must switch to survival mode The first place that is attacked to my surprise is the Calumet High School home of the Wolverines Viewing the film today gives a greater dramatic impact in seeing the school overrun The enemies ruthlessly shoot at the frenzy of students struggling to flee the school an image although fictitious difficult to watch Thus the action and story ensue fully equipped with bazookas and bullets re education camps and cries for vengeance and drinking the Spirit of the Deer and becoming the Wolverines small but terribly ferocious Avenge Me Avenge Me Teenagers with weapons ready to defend themselves and their land no wonder this film was condemned in 1984 as being the most violent movie ever made Red Dawn includes enjoyably ironic moments that break just briefly from the ever enduring explosive action This film is so ridiculous but a young Patrick Swayze and

  • Two Decades Since Forrest Gump Changed our Lives – GI Film Festival | Reel Stories! Real Heroes!
place at the right time like when he is pulled on stage to give a speech at the Washington Monument and happens to find Jenny amongst the crowd of thousands Anyway like I was sayin shrimp is the fruit of the sea Bubba Blue Continuing with the idea of finding happiness or fulfillment in the face of disability we cannot forget Lieutenant Dan Taylor played by Gary Sinise Lt Dan as fans know was destined to die on the battlefield as his ancestors had in every American war before him and despite his pleas to leave him so that he could die honorably Forrest saw Lt Dan and could not leave him lying in the jungles of Vietnam Forrest s heroism leaves Lt Dan alive and well although disabled without legs thanks to blue screen socks and special effects We meet up with Lt Dan later on in the film where he is living homeless in New York City until he agrees to be Forrest s first mate on the Jenny and together they become successful with the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co The last time we see Lt Dan is at Forrest s own wedding fully upright with his magic legs Since his role in Forrest Gump Sinise has gone on to work with Tom Hanks in other successful films like Apollo 13 1995 and The Green Mile 1999 What many people may not know about Sinise however is that he has dedicated countless hours playing and touring the nation with his own Lt Dan Band as well as creating the Gary Sinise Foundation which celebrated its third anniversary in June The band of which Sinise is a part of playing the electric bass tours around the nation also visiting military bases helping support and uplift troops and veterans through
