  • Gamble Sands GC
the varied topography and climates between the west and east sides of the Cascades A 3 hour or so drive east of Seattle lies the tiny farming community of Brewster Off the beaten track for sure but Brewster also happens to be home to the state s newest and I would argue best championship course Gamble Sands sits perched atop a bluff overlooking the mighty Columbia River Nearly every hole provides sweeping panoramic vistas while the golf course itself can hold its own against the finest in the world I played Gamble Sands not too long after it opened in August of 2014 and again the following year I ll try and be unbiased but since I love the wide open golf and sweeping views often associated with courses on the eastern side of the state I give Gamble Sands 5 stars out of 5 The location is spectacular provided of course that postcard views of the Columbia River and North Central Washington are of your liking The layout is links style with open fairways and large often undulating greens Course conditioning is as good as it gets and the greens roll pure Several blind tee shots make it a

  • North Bellingham Golf Course
Much like the links courses in Scotland the wide open nature of this layout often invites our friend Mr wind to the party Better brush up on a knockdown shot before teeing it here I m just sayin Also in line with links courses very few greens at North Bellingham are guarded in front by badness Consequently there exist multiple options er decisions if you re a glass is half empty type for getting your ball around this course I ve played here many times and never been disappointed by the course conditions The greens are well maintained and can get above average fast at times and the fairways and tee blocks are always mowed and clean Considering that North Bellingham is one of the busier courses in the area the overall conditioning is even more impressive It also drains pretty well so it s a good option during the winter months For those in need of a place to heal golf games currently broken the practice facilities at North Bellingham are of emergency room quality The practice green is large enough to accommodate plenty of panicked pre round putters with a lot of different hole locations For those who

  • Highlander Golf Course
carved atop a cliff nearly 900 feet above the mighty Columbia River and offers sweeping views of the river gorge and surrounding landscapes So precarious is the perch that the scorecard offers a warning to golfers on the 9th hole If your ball ends up in the ravine Do Not Attempt to Retrieve EXTREME DANGER But alas if you need to be told not to venture into that ravine then you my friend have issues far beyond a simple lost ball Located just 150 miles from Seattle and 170 miles from Spokane the Highlander Golf Club resides on the Eastern slopes of the Cascade mountain range and is easily accessible from anywhere in the state The course was originally designed in the mold of the classic Scottish Highlands courses but received an overhaul in 2010 It now sports three different holes where golfers must carry their shots across canyons ingeniously carved into cliff side Since the overhaul the course is more player friendly than in years past But be warned due to the exposed nature of its hilltop location the weather specifically the wind can be more of a hazard than any of the on course obstacles Once on the

  • Sudden Valley Golf Course
for many major Northwest tournaments including the Washington State Open and four Washington State Men s Amateur Championships Fairway sanding projects tree removals and close attention to green maintenance have improved the playability of Sudden Valley immeasurably in recent years The thing I really like about Sudden Valley is the distinction between the front and back nines The front nine is relatively open and flat and winds its way serenely around the shores of Lake Whatcom Swimmers sail boats water skiers and fishermen are all part of the front nine experience On the day I was there I watched a guy hook a nice smallmouth bass 15 feet from the tee block where I stood ready to hit Very cool Fairway landing areas are also a bit more generous on the front nine and the greens are generally larger The back nine however is a completely different deal Most of it is played on a hill overlooking the lake The fairways are lined with huge evergreens and placement off the tee is priority one In my opinion Sudden Valley is one of Washington s hidden gems It offers plenty of variety and with water hazards in play on 14 of

  • Palouse Ridge Golf Course
state s finer tracks Tucked away in the southeast corner of Washington State the Palouse is a majestic region of rolling hills and rich farmlands that stretch for hundreds of miles The picturesque silt dunes that characterize the Palouse were created during the last Ice Age when wind and snow deposited thick layers of volcanic sediment and glacial till in the area Over time a composite soil of exceptional depth and fertility was created among the roller coaster landforms Level land is a rarity here As landscape photographers can attest the Palouse offers a near perfect combination of topography weather and crops including a patchwork quilt of wheat lentils and dry peas Sculpted into this one of kind landscape is Palouse Ridge Golf Club which at first glance appears airlifted into the undulating hills Surrounding the course and its pine dotted ridges are rolling farms that change in color from bright green to golden amber to the textured browns of autumn While native prairie is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the U S the golf course was routed to preserve a significant riparian corridor that gives players a feel for what the pre agriculture Palouse once looked like
