a comment Tennessean interview Gretchen Peters makes feeling bad sound so good By Gretchen Peters February 26 2015 Feeling bad has rarely sounded as good as it does coming from singer songwriter Gretchen Peters Her latest album Blackbirds is an unflinching collection of songs meditating on mortality Death was everywhere around me when I was writing and it ended up coming out in the songs she says Her surviving parent is in her 90s and over the course of one week while Peters was writing for Blackbirds she attended three memorial services Aging and death are both rare subjects for female songwriters to address especially as candidly as Peters does on songs such as The Cure for the Pain a wrenching ballad that takes place at the end of a losing battle against illness and Pretty Things where she sings Pompeii crumbled and Athens fell A girl like me ain t got a chance in hell against em To read this interview in its entirety view it at The Tennessean s website Posted in News Leave a comment Blackbirds review The Telegraph By Gretchen Peters February 26 2015 Writing about the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to is hardly new Shakespeare was doing it more than 400 years ago But creating a 21st century album that is still able to deal in an original and touching way with the big and interesting subjects of love and death is a trick that many folk and country musicians try to pull off and few achieve especially in the impressive way that Gretchen Peters does with her 2015 album Blackbirds It s easy to see why Peters was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame last year because she is a writer of real depth 5 5 stars To read this review in its entirety view it at the Telegraph website Posted in News Leave a comment Interview Digging Into the Gritty Good Stuff By Gretchen Peters February 26 2015 I think the 2012 album Hello Cruel World paved the way for it Peters explains by phone from a New York hotel shortly after returning from a UK tour I really felt like I was getting at something good I was getting at the deep stuff on that record pressing a little harder into subjects that were slightly uncomfortable It wasn t as though I sat down and purposely wrote 11 songs about mortality It was what was in the room with me and what started to emerge It s just a natural and pretty rich topic for someone in my stage and age of life Because you know it s on our minds I have a parent who s in her 90s I ve been to my fair share of funerals and memorial services now It starts to encroach and it starts to be something that comes and lives with you at a certain point I don t mean that in a morbid way at all

in the year that I was writing the songs for this record I was doing a lot of thinking about that Love song The Matador describes the love of a woman for a bullfighter who also serves as a metaphor for the artist I love as only a woman can A very complicated man she sings When I was writing The Matador I had this man very clearly in my mind this creative force and to me his creative force is inextricably intertwined with his masculine energy and I was fascinated with that idea Peters reveals I ve had a lifelong fascination with Hemingway and Picasso and I would put both of those in the same category as the man in this song in that their creative forces are tied up with their masculinity I can relate to the artist in that song and to the woman so I have been on both sides of that equation I was fascinated with exploring the relationship of the woman with this artist who is so consumed with their creative force that in some sense she will never have as much of him as he has of her While Peters has played in Ireland several times over the past few years this is only her second time in Galway and she s keenly looking forward to this return visit I played in Galway once and I loved it it was about 10 years ago and we never went back and I ve been onto my booking agent for ever to get us back there I m so glad to be coming back it s been too long Tickets are available is life on new Hello Cruel World By John T Davis SPECIAL TO THE AMERICAN STATESMAN Published 4 19 p m Wednesday Feb 15 2012 Acclaimed Nashville singer songwriter Gretchen Peters spent 2011 spinning lyrical gold out of the chaotic harvest of straw that turned her life upside down the preceding year Now she is out touring behind the fruit of those labors the intensely personal head turningly melodic new album Hello Cruel World To hear her tell it 2010 was a year of challenges both internal and external for the 54 year old musician On the plus side she married her longtime accompanist Barry Walsh and forged a new and richer relationship with her transgendered son On the other hand her hometown of Nashville suffered catastrophic flooding a second home in Florida was menaced by the BP oil spill and a close friend committed suicide Talk about grist for a songwriter s mill That never leaves your mind Peters said by phone from the road The truth of it is that kind of year can be an incredible gift to you as a writer because the little crap disappears and it clarifies everything in a big way It was like OK these are the subjects I need to be dealing with It was a double edged sword Peters had early success as a writer before her own debut 1996 s The Secret of Life Her songs have been hits for Trisha Yearwood On a Bus to St Cloud Martina McBride Independence Day Bonnie Raitt Rock Steady and George Strait Chill of an Early Fall among others But Hello Cruel World seems so insular and intimate that it s impossible to imagine the songs rendered by anyone other than their creator Like Peters double edged sword the songs on this tour de force album cut both ways The title song reveals a narrator who is damaged goods but remains stubbornly resolved Some folks go the easy route Numb the pain and put the lights out me I m gonna stick around The lush and beautiful The Matador rides a razor s edge of life and death while Woman On the Wheel uses a carnival knife thrower as a metaphor for life s caprices Idlewild is a memoir of a childhood tinged with sorrow and a country slipping away The most corrosive line on the album might be in the midst of the deceptively jazzy Camille where Peters chronicles the detritus of a one night stand Ten minutes later he s driving away While you re putting your pantyhose on I fought for that line Peters said In the beginning of my career I was more concerned with beauty and the second half of my writing career I m looking harder for truth That pantyhose line is beautiful because it s true If the theme of the album could be summed up in one line it might be a trope from the song Dark Angel wherein Peters sings life is still a beautiful disaster If I have a credo that s it she agreed Life is chaotic it s probably random and it s certainly disastrous at times But it s also deeply deeply beautiful I think the element of optimism is in there After all the album s not called Goodbye Cruel World read this Hello Cruel World By Ludovic Hunter Tilney Nashville singer songwriter s music has the sweet ache of 1970s Tom Waits Hello Cruel World s title track introduces a typical Gretchen Peters heroine bruised by life but indomitable a point reinforced by the way the song s lush country pop rises and falls Best of all is Five Minutes in which the Nashville singer songwriter imagines a luncheonette waitress on a cigarette break reflecting on teenage pregnancy and romantic disappointment The music has the sweet ache of 1970s Tom Waits while the lyrics pack an extraordinary amount of story telling into five minutes DAILY MIRROR UK Gretchen Peters Hello Cruel World Nashville based Grammy nominated singer songwriter Peters has always been a class act but the blend of fearlessness and beauty in the songs on this album raises her game Her empathetic vocal and cast of collaborators put a premium on simplicity and directness MAVERICK UK Gretchen Peters Hello Cruel World Scarlet Letter Nashville based singer songwriter Gretchen Peters is still best known as a writer for such major stars as Martina McBride George Strait Bryan Adams Patty Loveless Faith Hill Pam Tillis and many others despite the fact that over the past sixteen years or so she s released some superb albums and has toured extensively especially in the UK where she commands a strong and loyal underground following Despite those hits for more famous artists arguably the best interpretations of Gretchen s songs are her own This latest album is ample proof of that fact with a selection of eleven songs that explore the human frailties with great sensitivity honesty and pure emotion In many respects as the title suggests this can be viewed as a concept or protest album except Gretchen doesn t often make her targets that identifiable nor spend that much of any song taking a platform or addressing social ills Instead she presents profiles and portraits of unusual characters and odd situations sometimes raising and then answering questions but on other occasions simply stating ugly facts and moving on through the song The results are a fascinating collision via song between what she hopes will happen and what she s seen suggests will occur There is a shimmering sonic quality throughout the album that is polished but not too slick The arrangements are built around Gretchen s distinctive acoustic guitar and husband Barry Walsh s keyboards Adding to the album s gorgeous instrumental mélange is versatile guitarists Will Kimbrough and Doug Lancio bassist Viktor Krauss and trumpeter Vinnie Ciesielski all capable of both subtlety and force The songs take a few listens to really involve the listener none more so than Idlewild a song that though very personal to Gretchen is actually universal in its story of an unravelling marriage break up through the eyes of a child interspersed with the unravelling of the American myth that everything is ok in the world because you re living in the land of the free such innocence both a child s and a country s is demolished in just over five minutes of pure songwriting poetry That leads into album closer Little World that puts our existence both personal and on a world wide scale into perspective She explores the endless questions of faith and spirituality in songs like St Francis with ethereal harmonies provided by Kim Richey or the powerful Dark Angel with Rodney Crowell adding his distinctive vocal to possibly the album s standout track There s no question about it Hello Cruel World is a jewel surely it will end up as the most important record to emerge in 2012 Posted in News Leave a comment Gretchen on NPR s All Things Considered By Gretchen Peters February 20 2012 Recently Gretchen spoke with Mary Louise Kelly of National Public
