there is no chance to cruise and little margin for error Le Mans is flat out from the fall of the Tricolor on Saturday afternoon through to the Chequered flag the following day With the high speed nature of Le Mans the cars do use a certain amount of the specially developed Gulf engine oil during the course of the race and so a mid race top up or two are usually part of the routine as the race progresses As the team has found sometimes to its advantage and other times to its frustration the race can be won and lost through the smallest of things so the numbers speed of pit stops are crucial Aston Martin Racing therefore developed a special piece of pit equipment in order to accomplish oil top ups in the most efficient way possible the Oil Bomb Like many good inventions the Oil Bomb is a pretty simple in its thinking It consists of a metal cylinder with a piston in it which when released pushes the oil into the car s lubrication system Up to 2 litres of oil are loaded into the cylinder which is then heated up in the team s tyre warming units so that when the oil goes into the engine it is already close to a working temperature The canister is pressurized before use and when the car comes in for a pit stop the bomb is lifted onto a valve on the rear quarter panel releasing the pressure and forcing the piston down to dump the oil into the engine It takes less than three seconds to release the contents of the bomb and the car is good to go for several more hours Watch out on TV for the bomb in use over the weekend but

only pull out two seconds and I was driving at my maximum Paul Dalla Lanna voiced his opinion on what was behind the win There s been so much hard work Everybody s really been pushing for a result and we re starting to get them so I m really feeling good Commenting on his team s performance in the 98 Mathias Lauda explained We did a perfect job our pit stops were really good and we made no mistakes at all so it all worked out really well The 96 Vantage GTE of Roald Goethe Stuart Hall and Francesco Castellacci started from eighth in class having been penalised in qualifying for exceeding the limits of the track and they suffered a penalty for overtaking under a yellow flag as well as a high speed off track excursion en route to finishing sixth in the category In GTE Pro the victory was even harder fought for the 99 car of Fernando Rees Alex MacDowell and Richie Stanaway as they claimed the crew s maiden WEC win The class lead see sawed between Aston Martin and Ferrari with Porsche never far away and it might have been a Ferrari win had not the AF Corse team committed a tyre changing infringement at their final pitstop which incurred a one minute stop go penalty with ten minutes of the race remaining Both MacDowell and Rees had been under huge pressure from the 51 Ferrari but Rees was able to relax a little in the final few laps knowing that his opposition would have to pit to serve the penalty We knew from yesterday that Ferrari would be very very fast even though we had got the Pole Position Fernando Rees explained Bruni the 51 Ferrari driver was catching me by at least

Racing have therefore worked together to develop a lubricant that works to all of the parameters that are essential to AMR s WEC programme The partnership has allowed Gulf to develop a single bespoke engine oil solution for the factory WEC Aston Martin racers that works for all of the rounds of the WEC satisfying their performance criteria and helping them to plan and run the most suitable strategy for the race Spa is also famous for having its own micro climate with seemingly all four seasons happening in a day Such has been the nature of things thus far Thursday saw the Spa area experience bright sunshine light rain heavy driving rain and even for a short while hail This makes getting the correct set up on the car extremely difficult so the team will be keeping a very wary eye on the weather forecast for Saturday and adapt the set up accordingly Once again there will be no less than five Gulf lubricated Vantage GTEs taking to the track with three competing for honours in the LM GTE Pro category GTE Pro The 97 car will as usual be driven by AMR stalwarts Darren Turner and Stefan Mücke For Spa however they will be joined by Rob Bell who will also complete the driving squad for Le Mans and joins the team this weekend to familiarise himself with the car and his team mates The 99 car will again be driven by Fernando Rees Alex MacDowell and Richie Stanaway alongside the all Danish Young Driver 95 car of Christoffer Nygard Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen The Dane Train as it is affectionately known is now of course running in the GTE Pro category having taken both Team and Driver GTE Am WEC world titles last year and it proved to be the quickest of the AMR cars at Silverstone The drivers will be trying to convert that speed into a place on the victory podium come Saturday and the team as a whole will be looking to take the battle to Ferrari and Porsche at a track which traditionally has favoured AMR s opposition GTE Am Last year the blue and orange 98 Aston Martin driven by Paul Dalla Lana and ex F1 star Pedro Lamy took its maiden class win of the season at Spa This year with Mathias Lauda son of Austrian triple world F1 Champion Niki on board the team already has a victory to its name winning first time out at Silverstone Having won the final race of the season at Sao Paulo the crew will be looking to make it a hat trick of wins with a repeat of last year s victory The 96 Vantage GTE of Roald Goethe 2013 WEC GTE Am Champion driver Stuart Hall and Francesco Castellacci certainly looks like it has the potential to challenge for category honours but the competition will be more fierce than ever at Spa as the ranks of the class have swelled since

2015 In partnership with Aston Martin Racing Results Rolex 24 at Daytona Gulf s motorsport partners Aston Martin Racing epitomized the spirit of Endurance Racing during the Rolex 24 at Daytona overcoming major mechanical problems and record a top six finish in the GT LM category The team had to change gearboxes no less than twice during the 24 hour race in the process losing more than four hours of track time The work attracted a sizeable crowd who cheered when the car drove out of the garage area to return to the race had the opportunity to watch as the team worked seamlessly to do the necessary mechanical work and perhaps somewhat regrettably had the rare chance to see all of the Gulf products that Aston Martin Racing uses being employed in one session However the 98 car driven by Darren Turner Pedro Lamy Stefan Mücke and Paul Dalla Lana and Matthias Lauda which had run in the leading group throughout the early stages of the race ran strongly in the remainder of the famous American twenty four hour race The Gulf sponsored and lubricated car fought back from almost last place in the 53 car field to finish
