  • Hall or Nothing :: News :: The Courteeners Biography
of music fans eager to find heroes who reflected life the way they lived it But with the Courteeners there s a twist Unlike say the paint splattered antics of The Roses or Noel Gallagher s steely determination to steer his band to the top their rise has come through more traditional means word of mouth Liam I started playing Open Mic nights purely as a social thing because all my mates were working and had to go to bed early After I played a solo gig at In The City the ball was rolling I d turn up with my acoustic guitar and there d be seventy five eighty people turning up just to see me I thought to myself if it s happening I want to get a band together because I never wanted to be a solo artist From then on it was just a question of getting the other chaps involved I ve lived next door but one to Campbell drums since I was three Mark bass and Conan guitar I ve known since I was ten Sounds simple doesn t it But such unforced natural chemistry has resonated with audiences on a level not seen since the rise of The Arctic Monkeys Following a succession of riotous local gigs at The Roadhouse and the Night Day we played anywhere that would have us alarm bells started ringing in London A R departments when a gig on Easter Sunday 2007 pulled four hundred fans Cue a deal with maverick major Loog and a touring schedule to send even Lemmy into palpitations We played a tour with The Coral then went straight into the studio for six weeks in London to record the album We were living in a hotel in Maida Vale sharing rooms living out of each other s pockets Every night I d come back to the room from the studio and my head would be buzzing from the volume and the pressure to get it right Then we had a week off at Christmas and it s been full on every since That sort of itinerary could break bands but we thrive on it We got the songs down and now it s time to spread the word All of which brings us to St Jude Recorded over six weeks at Olympic Studios with uber producer Stephen Street Smiths Blur Babyshambles it reflects a modern day Britain familiar to anyone who s ever walked down the high street after dark Cavorting finds Liam singing about a girl who Can t stand still Because of the sixteen pills she s taken in the mini bus with a dry eyed precision while the BRMC esque Kings Of the New Road will touch anyone who s ever felt that speed rush of adrenalin of a Friday night As for Bide Your Time it s an a morality tale to match Alex Turner a vivid snapshot of the emotional price to pay for a boozy one night

  • Hall or Nothing :: News :: St. Jude - the debut album
to national news has appeared fast tracked to the casual observer In truth the passage from Liam Fray solo shows through to this point with acclaim from NME Q Radio One and many points in between has come about through the old fashioned approach of building a fanbase via playing live From the peaks of sell out shows at Manchester Ritz and London Kings College on their first single proper to the new highpoints of a sold out Manchester Academy and London s Astoria prior to the album release The Courteeners have been and remain a band that the people can and do take straight to their hearts The Courteeners are a live band they believe in the power of live music as a world changing prospect and across such tracks as What Took You So Long and Fallowfield Hillbilly praise those who share their vision and berate those determined to relegate music to fashion accessory status They are most definitely NOT a haircut band even though they have very good haircuts Courteeners live shows are already legendary in the right circles for the singalong participation of the audience gigs to date see word perfect renditions of songs such as the raucous If It Wasn t For Me and the Motown infused Please Don t that see their recorded light of day on this album This is the mark of The Courteeners a fierce dedication to the band that means you have to know every word have to know every inflection because it matters In that respect the comparisons to Mancunian sons such as The Smiths Stone Roses and Oasis are correct It is also a mark of a great lyricist in the making Throughout St Jude Fray s lyrics resonate with the fierce honesty and self deprecating humour hinted

  • Hall or Nothing :: News :: The Seldom Seen Kid - The New Album
big themes of love and loss become the central focus of an album that sees Elbow a band universally recognised for their musical ability and innovation stretch their sonic template further than ever before With band members now fathers of young children this is an unashamedly grown up record from a band that can rightfully claim status as elder statesmen of the UK music scene In a climate where the track could be regarded as king this is also very much an album designed and envisaged to be listened to as a whole Elbow s progress to this point has been less than smooth the band being together since 1991 and as has been documented suffering a false start to their career before a succession of rapturously received independent EP s in the form of Noisebox Newborn and Any Day Now led to the release of debut album Asleep In The Back and subsequent Mercury and Brit nominations in 2001 A band keen to consistently challenge their listeners both lyrically and musically Elbow s progress from that point has seen them switch genres and accommodate overtly political and emotionally bare lyricism across their formidable back catalogue The Seldom Seen Kid continues in that tradition So we move from the sparse electronic of Starlings through the flamenco influenced The Bones Of You to the Zepellinesque rock of first single Grounds For Divorce where Garvey s gallows humour shines in the opening couplet of I ve been working on a cocktail Called grounds for divorce Album centrepiece The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver melds Elbow s musical ability to create epic heartfelt soundtracks with Guy s knack of making the personal universal telling the story of a boastful tower crane operator revealing the inner misery of his life in a discussion
