in early 2015 While What Goes Around riffed on everything from Newtonian law to medieval philosophy as you might expect from a musician with a PhD the new EP includes One For Sorrow a feminist manifesto of sorts and the dark southern gothic of album track Long Year mixed by Gareth Jones Merchandise Depeche Mode Liars What they said about What Goes Around Imperious vocals oddball accessible 20 tracks you have to hear this week NME A great dark classic pop song Steve Lamacq BBC 6Music What happened to Mansun s Paul Draper Well he s producing The Anchoress and the results are quite something CLASH The debut single premiered on Steve Lamacq s BBC 6Music show alongside an interview with Paul Draper about the project The Anchoress is Draper s first album length production since the implosion of Mansun in 2003 Paul helped to capture the collection of 12 songs on which Catherine played a variety of instruments including piano guitar flute omnichord mellotron wurlitzer glockenspiel and celeste as well as multi tracking up to 25 vocal harmonies on some of the songs The path to completing the album though has been littered with obstacles Made over a two year period recording was interrupted by a series of events that threatened to derail the project completely including Catherine injuring her hand so badly during a 48 hour recording session that she was told she might not play again and had to wear a metal cast for 6 months She says This album has been made on a wing and a prayer lots of favours one car crash one death one broken hand and a lot of patience on so many parts Stir in 3 jobs 4 studios 1 arrest 3 pianos 40 songs and 1 very patient engineer and you get some way to understanding what a long road it has been Catherine started out in the very different world of classical music playing the flute in youth orchestras from the age of 7 before having her life changed by discovering the Manic Street Preachers It was the Manics who provided her with a DIY education as she compiled a makeshift reading list from the references in their lyrics and interviews and gorged on books in the local library all the while stealing her sister s guitar and taking the first tentative steps to write her own songs All this book bothering culminated in her becoming the first person in her family to go to university moving to London to study English at UCL Only then did she begin to teach herself the piano after buying the crappiest keyboard from Argos with my student overdraft She also taught herself to produce and record her own material after being awarded a scholarship to continue studying for a Masters and PhD meanwhile holding down a job playing piano in the lounge at the Hilton in Trafalgar Square and being appointed Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank center while still at
