  • RIP, Steve Jobs - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
a more elaborate statement saying I have some very sad news to share with all of you Steve passed away earlier today Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius and the world has lost an amazing human being Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple We are planning a celebration of Steve s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon If you would like to share your thoughts memories and condolences in the interim you can simply email rememberingsteve apple com No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much I can say without a doubt that without Steve Jobs Hardin DD would either not exist or would certainly not bear any resemblance to its current form That goes for countless others who also work in both the tech industry and the world in general We were truly privileged to be alive to witness how the world changed due to the work of Steve Jobs Bill Gates and the other innovators who competed to shape technology and the society that depends on it Tags Apple One Response to RIP Steve Jobs Jon October 7 2011 Some great thoughts on Steve in an article written for ESPN by Lance Armstrong Steve bought more time than anybody could have ever imagined He was diagnosed in late 2003 and given three to six months to live And yet he lived eight more years More

  • Zuckerberg for President? - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
of maneuvers boosting the Palo Alto company s political profile in recent years joining a steady rise in lobbying spending several high profile fundraisers and the failed statewide candidacy of one of its key officers for attorney general last year With 800 million users in its social network and with very deep pockets we could have a new powerful Congress influencing entity steering American politics While the title of this post is obviously in jest it s interesting to see Facebook taking a more pro active political stance as compared to more reactive companies like Microsoft in the 1990 s recognizing that when you control the online profiles of 800 million people you are automatically involved in politics whether you like it or not As social networking and our online identities become more and more intertwined with our offline identities look for those who control information online to continue to become more involved in politics and likewise look for politics to get more involved with that information and the privacy concerns associated with it It is becoming more and more apparent that the companies who control the internet like Google Facebook and others build their financial bases using the information

  • Sony Ericsson's and Sprint's Take on iPhone - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
20 20 so essentially every company should be developing and working hardcore with Apple s iPhone The success of the iPhone 1 4 is unarguable iPhone 5 is expected to keep up this Apple craze Fortunately for Sony Ericsson they have nothing but praise for the company s commitment to Android On the other hand Sprint seems overwhelmingly committed and hopeful of iPhones for the future Just yesterday 2 days before iPhone 5 Sprint has arranged to purchase 30 million iPhones in the next four years AT T 99 million subscribers obviously found success with Apple s top of the line iPhone and then Verizon 106 million subscribers got in on that deal Sprint 52 million subscribers is betting on the iPhone to boost the company though in order to sell at the low prices consumers expect they will need to sell each iPhone for hundreds of dollars less than they are paying themselves It s always been an interesting race with Apple products leading the way and different carriers dying to get them on their networks so with the 3 carrier also trying to benefit from the iPhone we ll see where this leads them to the ground or skyrocketing to fortune with the others Tags iphone Sony One Response to Sony Ericsson s and Sprint s Take on iPhone hardin October 4 2011 I think it s sort of a last ditch gamble for Sprint since they have seemingly been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for awhile and need to up their data plan subscriber base through iPhone sales I think your point about Sony Ericsson not taking the iPhone seriously is interesting since iOS represented such an obvious UI leap forward from Symbian There s not much more they could say at this point than the

  • Facebook's New Open Graph and Timeline - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
integration is usually very shallow We either scrape user profile information or try to connect users within the app to their Facebook friends With the new Open Graph we can now parallel the actions users take in mobile apps on Facebook For example let s say I was creating a mobile app that allowed users to check into dog parks I could create a dog park object in my Facebook app and my mobile app I could then define a check in action on dog parks within Facebook When a user checks in I would create the relationship using the Open Graph API The action and the object would then show up in that user s Timeline and in their friends News Feeds and Tickers The Open Graph also lets you define web content in web apps as objects using special HTML meta tags I think these new technologies are exciting and will allow us as developers to more deeply integrate the products we make into Facebook This is something we are often requested to do for clients and these new APIs seem to be tailor made for that purpose Timeline Timeline is Facebook s replacement for user profiles Recently the headlines have been dominated by the negative reaction users have had to the new News Feed and Ticker Personally I think most of these reports are being exaggerated by the media to attract more page views So it s going to be interesting to see what happens when Timeline is rolled out because it makes the recent Ticker and News Feeds changes look like the minor UI tweaks they really are Timeline is a complete redesign of walls user info and basically any information you can currently view on a user s profile check out the link above to

be handled by the tablet hardware while the heavier code crunching HTML CSS Javascript etc will be sent to Amazon s cloud servers which have more muscle in the areas of RAM and CPU power Loading a single website requires initiating multiple connections to multiple servers For less powerful devices this process takes more time than it would for a more powerful machine Better equipped to handle this process with its powerful optical network the EC2 backend will take websites and optimize them for the Kindle Fire s screensize resolution so that the device has an easier time digesting those pages Optimized pages means smaller file sizes But Silk will also cache sites you ve visted on the EC2 servers thus keeping more of your storage free for cooler shit If you read between the lines however there is something crazy going on here For Silk accelerated pages all traffic is going through Amazon That means they have access to everything that users view they could theoretically throttle traffic from websites like let s say Barnes and Noble and they can do even sneakier things like stripping certain URL s to prevent Google from being able to mine usage data like they do with other Android devices This is a pretty profound step in the information war for Amazon currently being waged by Apple Google Facebook Twitter and others The amount of information that is able to be mined and sold from having a product that you control in the hands of massive numbers of consumers is staggering and is a large source of revenue for these companies As mobile devices begin to rely on the cloud more and more Amazon will likely not be the only company to try something like this Rob Malda or CmdrTaco from Slashdot shares

  • Capital Entrepreneurs and the Madison Tech Scene - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
all struggling with many of the same albeit different problems I met a gaming company who was wondering how to rasie capital in Madison There was a medical software company struggling to find new development talent in exchange for equity I was introduced to more seasoned entrepreneurs who were trying to figure out how to sell death Capital Entrepreneurs became a quasi resource quasi therapy group for young start ups Fast forward several years and I am thankful to say that many of these companies are still thriving in Madison We still regularly meet and consult each other on our problems How to we innovate our business models to support growth Where do we find quality employees and how do we integrate them into our existing teams What is the best way to use tax credits We all beat the 1 out of 10 survival rate and remain close friends I personally use Capital Entrepreneurs to mentor new start ups and tell them how to avoid some of the mistakes our company has made in the past Now with over 75 members always a new first member who is starting there first endevor Capital Entrepreneurs is an excellent way to

  • What is Economic Development? - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
Madison is an amazing city to live in with an incredible average overall quality of life I hope that the city s economic development plans take advantage of this and recognize that bringing in and retaining talented employees is every bit as vital as constructing new buildings If you re interested in sharing your thoughts on future economic development in Madison I d encourage you to not only post here but also take Thrive s economic development survey which will be used to help make decisions and prioritize the development of future economic development programs Tags Economic Development Thrive 3 Responses to What is Economic Development Jenn Post Tyler September 27 2011 Jon Thanks for joining the discussion today and spreading it via your blog Recruiting and retaining key talent is a crucial issue as you point out I hope your readers will share their thoughts on talent and other issues via the survey which closes October 11 Everyone can keep track of the process via advancenow thrivehere org we ll post the reports and strategies as they emerge and ask for feedback each step of the way Thanks again Best Jenn Post Tyler Interim EVP Thrive Reply admin September 27 2011 Thanks Jenn I ve had some discussions with people at Thrive last February I think about getting a job showcase website setup to help connect talent with tech startups and other tech businesses in downtown businesses as part of a solution to the problem I outlined in my post What are your thoughts on a project like that I had offered to help build it as I think it could augment the university s efforts which are primarily geared towards helping students find employment Reply hardin November 14 2011 Dave Cieslewicz had some interesting thoughts on Thrive in an article on his blog that I thought were worth sharing What does Madison have in common with Janesville Janesville is a fine city with a beautiful downtown full of historic buildings and its people have a proud tradition of hard work That s true of Madison as well but the comparison pretty much ends there Janesville is a manufacturing town that lived and died with General Motors Madison is a university and government town that is weathering the Great Recession better than most places Fifty one percent of Madisonians over age 25 have a bachelor s degree or higher while the comparable percentage in Janesville is only 22 Janesville took the recession on the chin while Madison stubbed its toe So why are Madison and Janesville both part of the same region as defined by the private public economic development entity called Thrive There is simply no good reason for it and the wrong definition of the region is hurting Madison and Dane County while it isn t doing much for the other seven included counties either Thrive is a fine idea and a good organization led and staffed by bright people but it s fatally flawed by its
