  • Amazon and Consumer Electronics, Again? - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
under the hood everything would be branded for Amazon Kindle and there would be a separate app store While this sounds silly on the surface and sounds like Amazon is too late to the game after we ve already seen RIM and HP essentially fail with their tablet offerings or at least surrender in the case of HP I think this could actually work Amazon already has a very strong brand created around the Kindle and has a very successful online store obviously that is the closest thing to rivaling iTunes By imitating Apple and placing their device in a walled garden instead of the vast jungle of Android software on the market Amazon has a shot to capture non power users who would typically lean towards an iPad Of course this is all dependent on the device and the custom UI that Amazon builds not being terrible which is certainly a possibility I just know that as someone who builds software including a lot of mobile software this is one of the few concepts in the tablet space that I ve seen that could have legs beyond simply being an Apple knock off which is certainly what companies like

  • HTML 5 as a Silver Bullet - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
shouldn t limit themselves That being said I wouldn t mind a shift towards a universal browser in the sense of no more compatibility tables no more css hacks everyone that accesses the internet would be on the same playing field minus add ons plug ins Or they could just discontinue Internet Explorer and I d be just as satisfied Reply admin September 23 2011 I totally agree that we should limit ourselves as developers my point is just that HTML 5 is still an incomplete solution It feels like back in the day i e mid to late 1990 s where some browsers didn t even support JavaScript so if you used that functionality you still had to implement a fallback anyway I think we re a year or two away from widespread HTML5 support with proper hardware acceleration on the canvas etc I think then technologies like Flex certainly won t go away they ll just compiled into HTML5 JavaScript instead of a virtual machine based format like SWF Reply goodman September 30 2011 HTML5 is much more well developed in the mobile space iOS and Android can handle HTML5 and CSS3 which is often left out in the discussion but shouldn t be because it has some great new features very well CSS3 transitions and animations are hardware accelerated in iOS which is great because JavaScript fades and animations can be very slow in mobile browsers HTML5 is not a silver bullet but if used right it can really help cross platform issues Also you can do some great stuff inside a WebView on Android The JavaScript version of Google Maps for example is much more feature rich than the MapView that Google provides The biggest improvement with HTML5 is with video Flash video is slow and has a lot of issues I think HTML5 is a reality these days since all modern browsers have good support for it It s also the only way to deliver video to iOS in a browser Here is great discussion of HTML5 vs Mobile that was presented at the last Google I O http youtu be 4f2Zky YyyQ Reply Aaron Heinen October 3 2011 On the topic of flash video I actually got to experience Adobe s latest enhancement Peer to Peer Streaming for live video They are using it to broadcast Adobe MAX live event I am currently streaming from 41 neighbors More on this here http baynewmedia com blog 2011 08 15 take that html 5 peer to peer and data swarming with flash Reply hardin October 4 2011 We re using the peer to peer streaming in one of our projects and it is very cool Much more streamlined that using a server solution like Red5 or FMS The big thing Flash video still has over HTML5 is that you can develop completely custom solutions in Flash Flex that integrate video without being stuck with the browser s rendition of the HTML5 video player and its controls

  • Thoughts on Windows 8 - Hardin Design & DevelopmentHardin Design & Development
that it currently seems to represent the concept of the app run amok Microsoft looks like it s trying to anticipate and pre empt the seemingly inevitable coalescing of Apple s OS X and iOS see the OS X App Store and fragments of the iOS such as LaunchPad in OS X Lion as early evidence by shoving Windows 7 and the Windows Phone OS into a one size fits all OS for phones tables and PC s The idea in itself is not bad at all since clearly we re moving towards a market where the PC is just one component of the hardware space not the undisputed king However the way Microsoft has thus far chosen to implement it is confusing and seems to be eschewing the power of the traditional windows interface in the quest to make everything an app It will be interesting to see if this less is more approach can ultimately work or whether we ll all be hacking our registries as soon as Windows 8 comes out to make it s UI revert back to the more familiar look of Windows 7 Tags Microsot Windows 8 Leave a Reply Click here to cancel
