  • What do you think were some of the rare Beatles bootlegs Daniel has?
February 24 2012 11 07 04 AM I was wondering which ones you think they might have been It pretty much comes down to whichever ones he s come across Believe it or not he has more QUEEN boots than anything else I mean I never even realized there WERE Queen bootlegs before I saw Dan s freakin motherlode Like the whole point of Queen is their polish precision production don t you think Queen bootlegs would be full of half finished demos and poorly recorded live gigs I would imagine Specifically getting back to Beatleboots I can speak for Daniel in highly recommending the M M sessions CD because I made him a copy of the copy that I got from Mick Gray Alan Moore s inker on Promethea and Dan swooned over it for about a year M M are better known as Paul McCartney and Declan MacManus and the bootleg CDs comprise the complete demos for what SHOULD have been the Beatles new songwriting team this stuff easily compares favorably to anything penned by the original Lennon McCartney duo Read about it in detail here http therarestuff blogspot com 2010 02 elvis costello paul mccartney html This looks like a good alternate place to get it http www bootlegzone com album php name vt174 section 3 http www bootlegzone com album php name mcmanus2 section 3 And here s the basic info The McCartney McManus Collaboration Vigotone Recs 1998 2 CD set slipcase 24 page booklet SONGS The Lovers That Never Were 25 Fingers Tommy s Coming Home So Like Candy You Want Her Too Playboy to a Man Don t be Careless My brave face Veronica One after 909 Mistress and Maid live Pads Paws and Claws live Shallow Grave My Brave Face That Day is

  • Why on Earth is this board so dead?
less profitable than it used to be to consistently loss making and counter intuitive from a business sense For all the talk about moving to new business models and approaches the basic fact is that getting money in from a release is next to impossible and the reason is an ever encroaching generation of kids that illegitimately download their releases and a dwindling older generation that still buy them The sad thing is the serious fans who come to places like this and most likely buy all the releases legitimately suffer unfairly because they do not get releases that might otherwise have happened Exposure in the media is dominated by sales and sales are dominated by PR and advertising placed behind acts with broad appeal and the marginal acts that previously would have maintained a small but income sustaining fanbase find they never have an opportunity to grow and progress into a position where they have some economic security An artist like Daniel is very fortunate to be in a position where he has earned a huge number of supporters across the media and established pop world who frequently plug him and give him exposure outside of their own commercial remit Many without this exposure wilt away before they ever have a chance to make the work they otherwise would have done As someone who was trying to put together a label that would champion noncommercial fringe artists such as Daniel I have watch potential project after potential project go down the tubes purely because we know that the sales figures will not even cover the basic costs System such as Kickstarter and the like look appealing but when you actually see the amount of money even the big name artists bring in even when they achieve their targets it does not always equate to a livable wage The other problem with such systems is that it is hard to move quick with them I recently had a project that I desperately wanted to put to together The artist was keen but it never got anywhere near happening simply because you need to have a certain amount of money ready to go before you start negotiating with their management And when you go in you have to be able to predict that you will generate a worthwhile amount of money from it Going in and saying well we might be able to raise 10 000 is not going to impress many people especially as you have to fund the project out of it and everyone has to take their cut out of that Having said that perhaps it is a good platform for reissues and projects such as Daniel s comic book Maybe one day we will use it to do a Blu ray release of The Angel and Daniel Johnston Live at the Union Chapel We have HD masters it would be fairly straightforward to prepare although still a lot of work and money but there is little chance

  • Why on Earth is this board so dead?
It s like if Iggy and the Stooges circa Raw Power had stayed that way for 40 years Had they tried it would have looked like self immolation and they d all probably be dead It had to change It s simply the course of things We ll never know what goes on in Daniel s head or how hard it must be to be dependent on a cocktail of chemicals to manage his serious health issues and still be able to maintain a business The business of Daniel Johnston Daniel draws everyday performs with the Nightmares tours and who knows what else He doesn t owe anything to anyone and most importantly he s not alone in making decisions for his recorded output That is now a matter of family discussion which is what seems to work best for him For everything the man has been through I am personally grateful just to still have him around you know If he simply wanted to just kick back and watch old horror movies on DVD for the rest of his life I d be down with it as long as he was happy We as fans have a lot to choose from to satiate our desire for more I understand your points Doug and they are all valid I m just trying to humanize this artist and musician a little And as for the peripheral stuff relating to Daniel like the tote bags etc I mentioned that just to illustrate a point that there is a lot of Daniel product on the market at this time and not to suggest it as a substitute for his music or other personally creative endeavors I m not 100 sure what you mean by there being only one real album in eight years but I will venture to say that had it been up to Daniel himself there d be ten and they d all be real Last Edit June 12 2011 08 23 52 AM by Henry Long Logged Although there s a darkness love balances chaos HL D Sulpy Frustrated Artist Offline Gender Posts 94 Re Why on Earth is this board so dead Reply 17 on June 12 2011 03 41 57 PM No one s denying that Daniel has the perfect right to sit back and spend his days watching horror movies drinking Coke reading comic books whatever I m just saying it s sure looking like he began to wind down in the early 2000 s and I think that s a shame because I love his music and want to hear more of it As for real album I mean an album issued as DANIEL JOHNSTON Not a compilation Not live Not a collaboration with someone else Since Fear Yourself in 2003 the only album we ve had like this is Is And Always Was in 2009 Logged GregPolard Frankenstein Offline Posts 63 Re Why on Earth is this board so dead Reply 18 on June 23
