  • Houston County’s Mary Thompson receives CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award |
school based immunization clinics and written articles for various media sources on the benefits of infant immunizations We are thrilled to be able to recognize Mary as Minnesota s CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Kris Ehresmann director of the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Prevention and Control Division at the Minnesota Department of Health MDH said The work being done at the local level is so vital to making sure all Minnesota children are protected from deadly diseases Thompson s passion for promoting immunizations stems from her experiences of caring for patients with vaccine preventable diseases during her more than 40 years as a nurse She has seen young patients die from complications of diseases like chickenpox Hib and HPV Early in my career I was impacted when I had to call the parents of a four year old or a young toddler and tell them that their son or daughter died of something that was later easy to take care of with an immunization she said Mary knows the devastation these diseases can cause and works hard to improve immunization rates for everyone she comes in contact with Houston County Public Health Director Mary Marchel said She is an inspiration to everyone she works with and is a true immunization champion We have a saying at public health leave nobody behind which means nobody leaves our public health offices without being up to date on their immunizations Thompson added She said she and the staff at Public Health always look up immunization records of the people they serve and she makes sure to update and educate the parents on immunizations With there being so much science and studies I m still amazed that there are educated people who don t believe in this she said Having seen the devastation first hand early
