the treadmill for hours and I would beat myself up for my failure It seems my weaknesses just keep going strong Head Over Heels As she approached her 40th birthday in 1998 Carlisle s life still looked shiny on the surface She could count among her blessings a loving husband Morgan Mason a film producer actor and former presidential aide to Ronald Reagan their beloved son and a lovely home in France In truth her unrecognized depression and the behaviors she used to mask it were getting worse Despite Mason s constant reassurances she still never felt thin enough pretty enough or good enough Despite her ongoing popularity as a performer in Europe and Australia and several reunion records with the Go Go s she felt washed up and old And while she loved touring the chaotic lifestyle often left her feeling exhausted confused and unhappy Carlisle knew she needed to stop her destructive behaviors but she didn t know how She wanted to be able to appreciate how good she had it to be fully present for her husband and child but she couldn t get past her growing sadness loneliness and sense of isolation Overwhelmed by her negative thoughts and emotions she routinely succumbed to crying jags To dull her pain and get through the day she relied on her old standby substance abuse I couldn t deal otherwise she recalls while hiding her actions from her husband and friends who believed she was clean and sober The double shame only reinforced her conviction that she was worthless adding to her misery I finally learned to love myself I could look in the mirror and like what I saw rather than being critical I had been running away from my life since I snuck out of my bedroom as a teenager and moved to Hollywood Carlisle muses now I made so many promises to so many people so many times through the years that I was going to get help and I couldn t keep my promises Encouraged by her husband she began seeing a therapist to deal with her overpowering feelings of sadness and self loathing While ready to admit that she needed help however Carlisle found that she wasn t yet ready to face the hard work of recovery When the therapist asked why I was there I told her I felt like my baggage was too heavy to carry around anymore Then I burst into tears Carlisle recalls I saw her several times a week but I still didn t care enough to make it work For one thing she says Change was a big scary word for me I had to learn how to let go of guilt and shame that were my two middle names for most of my life Carlisle remembers feeling ever more empty worthless and hopeless She briefly entertained thoughts of ending her life convinced that things might be better for her and everyone else if she wasn t around
