    time though her act wore thin in both places She no longer was able to hide from her students her family her friends and most importantly herself that something was deeply wrong The pressures of work family and self expectations were bowling her over It got to the point where I was totally overwhelmed Beth Sarah says I began believing I was failing at absolutely everything And that was unacceptable because the Jamaican native had rarely failed at anything in a high achieving life After graduating high school at age 15 Beth Sarah earned a sociology degree at Princeton University a master s in social anthropology from Cambridge and a doctorate in performance studies from New York University Along the way she became fluent in three languages and met her husband Robert who is now an Episcopalian minister By 2008 she could point to a happy marriage a thriving family and a great job at Spelman College in Atlanta where she was director of the African Diaspora program But instead of feeling that she had it all Wright felt as if she had too much to handle My plate was full of guilt Beth Sarah says I began to think there wasn t enough of me to go around I started canceling classes And the pressures at home felt enormous We had five children including a newborn we had adopted after receiving just two weeks notice I began wondering if I was subconsciously treating him differently than my other children even though I wasn t Her fatigue hopeless feelings and increasing irritability prompted her to meet with a psychiatrist who diagnosed her with clinical depression Beth Sarah s initial response was denial I thought it had to be a misdiagnosis she says I couldn t accept the fact that I
