psychiatrist who started me on the only antidepressant that has ever made a difference in my life But my beloved ex boyfriend had returned to my life boosting my mood just long enough for the psychiatrist to think I was doing better By the time the inevitable crash came I had already left his care When my parents showed up to move me my cats and my belongings back into their musty basement my roommate at the time says I simply stared at the wall helpless and numb She was right After so many slap downs I had almost abandoned the idea that I could be helped or help myself Doctors may be the ones who diagnose us and prescribe our meds but as patients we stand to lose or gain the most by the decisions It took a car accident to convince me that something had to change After a weekend visit with my former roommate I left to make the two hour drive back to my parents place The night was stormy with blowing snow making it hard to see I hit an icy patch spun out of control and plowed into the ditch As I waited for the tow truck an epiphany struck I was supposed to be here where my friends were Staying with my parents would kill my soul I had to do something to take care of myself I researched the meds the psychiatrist had prescribed me and returned to my original family doctor the one who seven years before had diagnosed my depression as a simple virus For the first time in my life of passive acceptance I told the doctor what I needed a higher dose of my medication I showed her the research I d done and explained that of all
