  • A Saturday Morning Conversation | Esperanza - Hope To Cope
with on a deeper level Well our friendship is one of those connections Our conversation was filled with catching up with each other s lives but even more importantly it was filled with support love and friendship We mentioned the ups and downs life threw at us since the last time we spoke laughed at each other s follies shared the miracles that appeared in our lives and above all took the time to listen to each other It was such a delightful way to begin a sunny Saturday morning My favorite part of our time together was sharing our gems of know how Eunice is in the middle of publishing her first book and was in need of resources and I needed some prayer advice and knew that Eunice was the right individual to seek counsel In sharing those gems we both felt empowered by the other Interestingly enough Eunice and I only speak a couple times a year If you were listening in you would think we ve spoken weekly There s a bond between us where time and distance isn t felt I believe one of life s greatest gifts is friendship Friendship where you are comfortable

facilities exclusively for female veterans Kathleen Chard PhD director of the nationally recognized Post Traumatic Stress and Anxiety Disorders Division at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center says that in general women experience higher rates of PTSD than do men in the military The fact that women have more PTSD in the military is in keeping with society in general she says If you have a hurricane or another catastrophe more women are likely to develop PTSD than men Some common symptoms of military related PTSD include inability to sleep nightmares during sleep extreme anxiousness in waking hours overreaction to loud noises such as a car s exhaust backfiring and heightened irritability Dana C the former Marine knows all about how combat related PTSD catapults the individual into a constant state of hyper vigilance making it impossible to rest or sleep peacefully In many ways she says it s similar to what women experience in domestic violence You re never safe even in your own home even when you go to sleep she says Chard says female veterans with post traumatic stress are more prone to depression as well Predisposing biological factors that may be genetic along with social norms and pressures all contribute to the problems women face Chard explains Depression is more of an inward turning disorder says Chard adding that women are more likely to cope with trauma by internalizing it In terms of symptoms she adds you see excessive sleep social withdrawal a lack of interacting with your spouse or children PTSD is not a lifetime disorder It is something that can be treated in a majority of individuals there is hope if they seek treatment Women are also more likely to come down with eating disorders and in the most severe cases to engage in self injurious behavior such as cutting On the other hand male veterans who are suffering from post traumatic stress historically tend to abuse alcohol and drugs more Chard says Another issue is the differing responsibilities that female and male soldiers typically face when returning from war When women deploy and come home it is often in a different context than men says Karen D Davis a researcher at the Canadian Defence Academy in Kingston Ontario There could be issues that have a disproportionate impact on female soldiers such as primary responsibility for children both physical and emotional explains Davis who is a sociologist and section head at the academy s Leadership Institute Even with the cultural shift of men sharing parenting responsibilities and taking on more of the household work women by far still put in many more hours each week at childrearing Davis points out explaining that women returning home from the front lines typically face more domestic duties than their male counterparts How does a mother coping with PTSD handle child care as well she asks rhetorically of the need to recognize this challenge Yet family can be an asset in providing a psychologically stressed out soldier with help

the economic situation has not only struck home but also has become a new and very difficult reality What the future holds Scott M has dealt with anxiety disorder for 15 years but it didn t prevent him from having a successful career as a firefighter Retired now Scott has a comfortable pension plus a solid part time job with a media service His wife has a career with the state of California Even though the state s had financial difficulties Scott s not terribly worried about the future with one notable exception their kids college funds However Scott knows he and his wife are luckier than most His own brother in law for example faces a possible layoff We re really fortunate and blessed when it comes to our career paths and our stability he says On the opposite end of the spectrum is Chattanooga Tennessee minister Jeff C who works as a hospital chaplain He won t have a job as of August when the one year chaplain training program ends What s more he notes the outlook for hospital chaplains is bleak The future he admits scares the living daylights out of me Formerly a traditional pastor in a rural Virginia community Jeff left to enter the training program following a major depressive episode He knew when he took the position that he d have to look for work again but he didn t realize how gloomy the economic forecast would be The idea there may not be a job out there is beginning to haunt me he admits When depressed the last thing you want to do is talk to other people It s a matter of forcing yourself to do it What I do as a chaplain now is pretty specialized And frankly when hospitals slash their budgets they can only cut doctors and nurses so much so they cut ancillary positions Jeff adds He could go back to working as a traditional pastor but he considers that future even more uninviting Churches make their budgets by what people put in the plate he explains and the people who are putting money in the plates can t make a living To cope Jeff avoids focusing on the news When he needs a boost he goes to the hospital s labor and delivery ward to gaze at the newborns He also tries to avoid dwelling on the economy and keeps himself as active as possible Of course it s hard for him to avoid bad news as a hospital chaplain he encounters plenty of employees distressed about the economy I work at a public hospital which is never in the black and I see a lot of people with anxiety about how stable their jobs are Looking ahead It s hard to look into the future and see anything good about today s tough times But as Shred says just as winter is followed by milder weather financial spring will also come It s important to
