I am not Superman I find that my acceptance of my limitations actually reduces the depression with no expectations Growing older with grace helps me mold my emotional balance The inner peace that comes from this causes me to be more focused on my moods and how to react to them That way I can stay away from the kryptonite J C L San Francisco CA I think lifestyle has a lot to do with men s depression For example a workaholic can lose his family and lose track of what s important The bigger problem I think is men s inability to recognize their own symptoms After I decided to get help for my depression I attended many groups and workshops on how to cope with the illness The attendance was usually totally women When another man attended it was usually for just one or two sessions Most felt they didn t have a serious problem so why should they come Even a spouse can be in an awkward position because mental illness is not a man s problem C W H Penticton BC Acting and thinking young keeps my depression at bay In all honesty simple acceptance of the aging process helps to avoid the regrets of yesteryear that bring on depressive episodes B H Calgary AB The thing I have noticed here at midlife is asking myself What have I accomplished that is of lasting good This causes me to dip into some depression and anxiety because here at 52 I haven t accomplished much The way I am handling it is to turn to God for help I will just have to be patient do what I believe is right and wait to see what He has in store for me This has helped calm my

stroke compared to patients without depression So building a healthier lifestyle may not only improve your mood but could prolong your life A recent study of Vietnam veterans points to the long term physical consequences of depression Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine WUSM in St Louis surveyed the health data of 1 200 veterans all male twins over a 12 year period from 1992 to 2005 The study found that veterans who had depression in 1992 were almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who had no history of depression We knew that some of the genes that contribute to depression also contribute to heart disease says Jeffrey Scherrer PhD research assistant professor of psychiatry at WUSM and lead author of the study But the researchers found that twins who had a high genetic risk common to depression and heart disease but never developed depression had no increased risk of heart disease This strongly suggests that depression itself is a significant risk factor for heart disease Scherrer says We all know the ABCs of good health exercise regularly don t smoke eat lots of fruits and vegetables and limit fatty foods A five year study

steroid shot and an appetite stimulant I don t know how long this will last Take Rascal home and love him You ll know when it is time to bring him back for his last visit the vet said So I did just that For almost two weeks Rascal seemed to rally back He found his favorite place under our Christmas tree most satisfying warmed his weary body in front of the fireplace and sat comfortably on my lap purring as we enjoyed each other s company Although Rascal s time was limited I made a conscious decision to enjoy the blessing of time I was given with him The words of the vet you will know when to bring him back were tucked way for a little while And the vet was right Just under two weeks Rascal began to fade again It was time to say goodbye Saying goodbye to your beloved pet is part of life however it s a very sad part of life Those who have been pet owners understand the grief that accompanies a pet s departure Time heals they say But I have found some other rituals that helped me heal from Rascal
