aches disturb their digestion the list of ailments goes on and on Just recognizing this fact is a wake up call Watch out for those with whom you choose to hang out You may not have control choosing your family but you do have control of whom you choose for friends Are you choosing friends who bring out the best in you Have you ever had a friend who drained your energy with complaints and whining A friend who poo pooed your dreams and aspirations A friend who acted like your best friend face to face but then bad mouthed you behind your back If so it is time to re evaluate who you are choosing to spend time and energy with Think about it are those relationships worth the stress brought on by them Most likely not Now let s flip the coin so you can recognize the individuals who bring out the best in their friends Look for individuals who encourage you to reach out of comfort zone so you continue to grow and learn Seek friends who bring out the best in themselves and who share in the excitement of your own successes Friends who support you

when you felt similar stress What events were happening in your life What were the outcomes before and were they helpful K Warren 67 asks herself another set of questions to change her relationship with stress and in turn her relationship with the people and situations around her When I m spinning my wheels and going nowhere only digging deeper I just stop says Warren On a piece of paper she draws three columns titled Is it in my control Is it not in my control and I don t know She checks one column for each issue that s causing stress It puts emotions aside and makes things tangible Warren explains You read it then it starts to talk back to you then things start to gel and you begin to see what s going on You can see the possibilities Even that last column is important because it means you need to learn more about the strengths and weaknesses in your thinking and in your reality Warren says the column technique has helped her feel like a warrior when confronting her most difficult stressors which include abusive treatment from family members and others I ve stopped hiding in a corner she says I ve got a lot of fight in me and I m just going to put one foot in front of the next until I make it Build resilience The fact is some stress is going to be part of our existence no matter what Avoiding or reducing stress may be necessary at times but total insulation may leave us less able to face pressures and disappointments that do come along It s like the tolerance we have for alcohol which isn t the best analogy because I m not advocating alcohol but it s an accurate one says psychologist Guy Winch PhD whose most recent book is Emotional First Aid Practical Strategies for Treating Failure Rejection Guilt and Other Everyday Psychological Injuries Winch explains that someone who rarely drinks can get buzzed on just a few sips of wine while someone who is more accustomed to imbibing can drink a whole glass and not be as affected regulating emotional responses to stress is as important in maintaining good mental health as diet and exercise Stress is the same way We can t avoid it or when life puts us in stressful situations we ll be ill prepared he continues We need to learn how best to deal with it when it comes along because then we can see the opportunity to develop strategies for coping in ways that work for us In fact researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo have found that people with a history of moderate adversity fare better in stressful situations especially when compared to people whose past includes either no adversity or high adversity Put another way manageable exposure to stress can help build resilience When Shehani of British Columbia was laid off as a social media

to be the best that I can be It helps me to get things done on time and done properly the first time I hate it because it makes me hate myself if I make a mistake and makes me feel even more worthless when I am depressed I feel less than human because I am not perfect I am much more accepting of other people s failures A S via Facebook PERFECTIONISM DRIVES ME to be better at my music all the time It can get really disheartening and frustrating when I m confronted with a concept I don t understand but it drives me to set very high standards and reach them in time TORONTO ON COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY has helped me look at tasks in a new light I have discovered that the anxiety involved in perfectionism can be very distracting a stress I can ill afford and easily deal without Modern life tolerates mediocrity quite well and although I know I am much more capable letting go of perfectionism allows me to satisfy competing demands and keep my sanity BELLEVILLE ON REMEMBER THE SAYING Don t let the perfect be the enemy of the good PHOENIX AZ When I was in college I pushed myself too hard and suffered from ongoing anxiety In my senior year I remember someone saying D means degree It let me off the hook for classes that weren t my top priorities I still did the work but I spent my best efforts and talents on classes for my art degree Even there I realized no one else would know if I didn t make it to perfect TUCSON AZ MY NEED FOR structure and clear goals and instruction is my biggest downfall If I don t have a perfect clear

Stress contributes to my depression and anxiety big time Some of the things I do to cope are crafts reading writing using cognitive behavioral therapy skills watching good movies dramas especially and opening the shades to let in natural light I see a therapist on a regular basis who gives me tips on how to cope I try to get out of the house to do things because I know it is good for me It is a struggle but I think that it really lifts my spirits Meds help a lot for me but I realize that they are not a cure for all who are traveling this hard road B F Salem OR Money related stress the lack of money needed for basic life expenses or the sudden loss of savings pitches me full force into depression I think this is because I feel worthless if after so much hard work I don t have anything in my bank account Coping is hard but after reminding myself that I am still alive and able to earn a living just about the depression eventually morphs into just a lousy mood I just wish no one would ever say It s only money or As long as you have your health or At least you have family and are not alone No one has the right to belittle someone else s misfortune A New Jersey As a veterinarian stress was a large factor in 30 years of practice I m now retired Often a typical day consisted of seeing 40 or more patients along with four to five hours of surgery lab work X rays etc The biggest stress producer for me was emergency calls after hours including on holidays and weekends I loved my patients and work but because of this stress I would become extremely angry I masked my angry feelings from family friends and clients The anger turned inward resulting in depression I retired to save my life Name Withheld Morehead City NC Stress contributes greatly to my mood changes and level of anxiety To combat this I take whatever meds are prescribed to improve my sleep because good sleep is crucial to my well being I do more of the things I want to do and fewer of the things I do not want to do I walk away from negativity I journal and chart on a daily basis so I can see in black and white how I am actually doing T K Locust Grove VA What many would consider a small stress like packing for vacation or having dinner guests can throw me into a panic attack My mind refuses to function and I just want to retreat somewhere safe What helps is planning planning planning I found that packing several days before the trip is very helpful I don t do as many dinner parties Too bad since I love to cook but the pressure of guests can be overwhelming even though my
