distress among college students Snow occasionally spoke at events sponsored by the foundation and in 2006 gave an online interview for its Half of Us campaign She says that going public added a sense of purpose to her life connecting with other people and letting them know that I knew what they felt like Snow stepped up her activism two years ago following several highly publicized cases of bullying and anti gay harassment Snow was particularly touched by responses posted online by other young people who felt anguished and alone She remembers thinking We need a place for people who feel different to encourage each other we could create a movement that could bring together people and blend their voices and share experiences Thus was born Love Is Louder a social media phenomenon originally aimed at college students that has since reached a broader demographic I was actually en route to a conference in Houston and I got a text from Brittany that basically said This is heartbreaking Can t we do something recalls Courtney Knowles who was then executive director of the Jed Foundation and now runs Love Is Louder Within days they came up with the concept of launching a kind of solidarity movement through Facebook Twitter and MTV My story is similar to others with the twist that I started acting when I was 3 years old On impulse Snow wrote the words Love is Louder in marker on the palm of her hand then posted a photo online an image destined to go viral Soon others were posting their own versions often adding poignant follow ups Love is louder than eating disorders Than depression Than people who look through you instead of at you For some kids there isn t anything they can do about bullies explains Snow But they can take a marker take a picture and embrace the message and feel a part of something bigger than the voices that bring them down Snow is involved in all aspects of the movement Knowles reports by email She does speeches writes blogs articles appears in videos and PSAs She also works her Hollywood ties She persuaded fellow cast members of Pitch Perfect a comedy about a capella singing groups now in post production to participate in a video Her perfectionist streak still sometimes kicks in The Jed Foundation and MTV launched a dedicated website LoveisLouder com earlier this year and Knowles recalls her scolding at the time You said the website would go up Wednesday I m like Back up boss he says with a laugh Asked during her talk if finding time for Love Is Louder adds to the stress in her life she says it s just the opposite This is something I get to do every day with Courtney that makes me feel better It s just very rewarding and inspiring I do it for me but I also do it for other people because I do know that if this was
