    is flipped in someone with a mood disorder so that the morning becomes a period of low energy and emotions clinicians refer to it as diurnal variation of normal chronobiological rhythms Diurnal indicates of or during the day while chronobiology is the study of a living organism s cyclical activity over time generally as that relates to cycles of the sun or moon Circadian rhythms describe processes that occur in a roughly 24 hour cycle or around a day such as when we eat and sleep Intriguingly all of the cells in our body have distinct biological clocks that regulate our essential rhythms Some control short rhythms such as heartbeats others underlie monthly events such as menstrual cycles and still others are linked to annual rhythms such as hibernation patterns in animals and weight changes jet lag and seasonal affective disorder SAD in humans Diurnal variation during depressive episodes is due to changes in our clock genes and other elements of our biological clocks especially in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus in our brains an area responsible for controlling circadian rhythms Feeling at your worst in the morning is almost always associated with a messed up sleep wake cycle It is often more severe in those with bipolar illness We know that there are multiple causes of depressions and that each may require different kinds of treatments We do not know however how many depressive episodes might be caused by chronobiological rhythm alterations How can I start to feel more in synch For those with morning depression the most important treatment goal is to resolve the underlying depressive episode In effective treatment with antidepressant medications part of the positive result appears to stem from gradual resynchronization of our clock genes and the sleep wake cycle This often requires several
